SN, My take aways 1. We can copy shamelessly the portfolio of selected but their Convictions? 2. Good for people who want to dive in small & micro cap & ready to become self fund manager. 3. May be effective if no of stocks are more in portfolio considering only 1/3 rd last the marathon. 4. Your ability to simplify most complex ,confused & marketing driven fin.products is of great help to average retailers. Thanks for same.

I agree. I wish all Indians speak like this. He does not have any put-on Western accent, but at the same time speaks clearly with a good diction, and a trace of Indian accent - but a nice accent. I am in the UK, and frankly now find it almost impossible to decipher when many of the young Indians speak (particularly the young North Indians), because for whatever reason they seem to think they need to imitate the American/Western accent. But in the process, they end up with a mish-mash and a poor/unclear diction, and worst of all they speak incredibly fast (as if they are an Express train desperate to get out the words out of their mouths as fast as possible). The South Indians are somewhat clearer in their diction, maybe because they do not try to put on a false American accent to the degree some of the young North Indians do. All that the people need to do is speak slowly, and clearly and without putting on any fake accent - just as the gentleman in this video. And it sounds so perfect!

So nice of you, thank you for kind words. Honestly, it's a trick many fall into by measuring a channel on the basis of subscribers. For instance - reaching 1 million subscribers is not that difficult and publishing 1 short a day for 7-8 months or topics like "best mutual fund" will get me there. In my view, this is a problem because in many case, a large non-targeted viewership seeps into the channel and over time, the views start falling. E.g. Rachana (who has done a incredible job over the last 3-4 years) seems to be going through that phase. She's has 48 lakh subscribers, is still clocking 40k subscribers every month but is having only 100k views per day. The reasons can be many although I think it's more of viewer fatigue -- which is something my channel will also go through over time I've been looking at these phases and assessing KZbin from a viewer & creator perspective has been helpful. My own read is that -- out of the 150k subscribers I have now or wherever I reach, it will come down to just 5-10k loyal fans who will continue with me & subscribe to the valuable services (like newsletter, community, smallcase etc.) I plan to introduce over the months & years. This suits me perfectly as I want to work with & for a smaller number of patrons and do more for them. Infact, let me close this with something I observed recently. So, I've had around 75 1:1 consultation calls and of the 75, only 8 persons had ever posted a comment on my channel. Which means 90% of the people who paid, discussed & got value from those interactions were a part of the silent majority. If I had assumed that only the ones who comment are the loyalists (much like how everyone says "underrated" and "subscribers"), then I would have been wrong. There's a bigger chunk out there and building a participation loop for them has to be my endeavour

Hi Shankar, great video like always. Here is quick tangential question and hope you may please answer - I like the quality of your videos - the way they are presented is just right with voice, commentary and very fine graphics. Just curious what recording devices for audio and video do you use? And any software? Thank you 😊
@shankarnath

Thank you very much 🙌 1. Audio recording happens via a regular 700 rupee Boya mic that can be bought on Amazon 2. Video recording is done via a Sony camera (an expensive one .. almost 2 lakhs) that my videographer brings with him. I don't own a camera myself. 3. For editing, the editor uses Adobe Premiere Pro 4. The invisible quotient is the graphics you see on screen. I create that using Powerpoint; slide by slide and the editor replicates it 5. For thumbnails, I use Canva

You are so underrated! Your content is exceptional, and I resonate deeply with it. I have occasionally emulated investors without hesitation, and it has proven to be successful. However, when I share this approach with others, they often raise concerns about dependency on someone else. While this perspective holds merit, I see no issue in persisting with this strategy. In various aspects of our lives, such as health, career, and law, we rely on expert advice. why not apply the same principle to personal finance? :)
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 10 ай бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad you liked this video. In my view, the general human behaviour (inspite of what one says) is to a) either work towards an output or b) pay for advice. That's why DIY investing or managed investing via MF, PMS, smallcase, advisor works well. The cloning strategy is outside the scope of both approaches i.e. it doesn't require much work nor is someone pushing us or enforcing a transaction/advice on us. I feel that's why most people think twice before using screeners, cloning and similar approaches. Plus, there is the fear factor point i.e. "what if I am wrong". Which is strange because everyone's relatively OK if "the fund manager is wrong" and we all have a natural recourse in villifying the fund manager or exiting the fund (but beyond that we can't do much)

how to find entry and exit points of stock. Can you provide from reference website from which i can gather data for study ? Thanks in advance.
@shankarnath
@shankarnath Ай бұрын
For entry points, please read the last 6-7 posts of my newsletter at shankarnath.com -- you'll get a good idea on when is it ripe to invest in a company With re: exit: well, exit is a lot easier than entry. A simple framework that's worked for me (most times) is the reversal of fortunes approach. Here's what I mean by that -- When investing in a stock or asset class, you would have identified 3-4 key reasons e.g. valuation is low, momentum is rising, promoters are buying, high growth rates etc. This prompted an entry into the stock. Say, 3 years later you find that many of these points have reversed i.e. - growth has slowed down from 20% to 5% (like what happened with Exide) - valuations became too expensive (like Avenue Supermart) - promoter is selling (like Easy Trip Planners) In such a scenario, an exit is the best course of action. Ofcourse, there is some subjectivity here which is good because entering & exiting is not a simple mathematical problem. It's got a lot of qualitative elements & biases. For example -- I exited Sterlite Technologies after 2 quarters of holding it after I realised the management is changing goal posts too many times & it's not focussed enough in completing existing projects. I sold my holdings there due to lack of confidence in the company's management -- that no screener can help you understand. It requires reading of the transcripts, news, blogs etc. and this approach has worked very well for me so far. What I love most about it is the simplicity of it -- if the reasons for which one entered the stock/asset doesn't exist, then simply exit Hope this helps

Hi Shankar, this is a very interesting video and it was fun to follow along. I wonder if you could elaborate on the choice of entry and, more particularly, exit points. What pointers would you give to keep subjectivity to a minimum? By the way, I used largely the same stocks but with different exit points in many cases. This gave an IRR of 32.8%. I hope to investiigate the data set further such as looking at your suggested variations. Thanks for an enjoyable exercise.

Hello. Glad you liked it Subjectivity can be reduced massively if one reads the companies featured and forms ones own views. For instance, in the case of Ashish Kacholia -- I agree with a few picks of his like Garware Hi-Tech Films. I even featured it in my newsletter. However I don't agree with his selling "Sky Gold" at around 2,600 rupees. I felt there's a lot more scope there (again featured in the newsletter) and inspite of me buying it at 2,800 -- its at 4,380 now .. in a matter of 2 months. Exit points are simple. When the reasons for entry no longer exist, it's time to exit. For example - I've pulled out from PSP Projects, KRBL and a few more over the last 6 months when I saw underlying weaknesses on multiple factors. 1-2 quarters of issues is OK but there were some rancid decaying in fundamentals which didn't appeal to me.

Hello Shankar, Can you pls review smallcases in general? As most of the smallcases rebalance on need basics or very often. How does tax play a role when invested amount is large? It might be of lots of use to the viewers as many invest via smallcase these days. Thanks

I can try .. even spoke to Vasant on this a few months back. I had sought some enhanced access but the team couldn't offer it then (and they were right as some of my ask violated the investment advisor's IP). But I can certainly do what you are referring to here. Pls give me a few weeks to get back on this.

In step 5 you mentioned about clean up and paying attention to when the investment was initially made and when the investor took an exit. My question is what if the investor had bought and sold the stock on different intervals - The price on each date would be considered or you took an average or something to calculate the returns? Also, if you used the buying and selling price to calculate the returns then what role did price over last 8 quarters play?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 10 ай бұрын
1. I used the price on specific dates i.e. 31-03-2022, 30-06-2022 and so on 2. I didn't understand the question on "role of price", can you pls elaborate?

@@shankarnath Thank you Shankar. What you are doing here is worth appreciating and I wish you more power👍 I will definitely view the playlists that you hyperlinked. However, I have another question. Have you made a video on investing for NRI investors? There is a huge interest to invest in India but the majority of the people I know find it challenging to understand the dynamics.
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 9 ай бұрын
@@ryansood2651 No. I haven't made any video for NRIs specifically. That's because the techniques/schemes/portfolio I would hint at for expats would be the same as I'd have a resident Indian consider. But yes -- NRIs will have queries on taxation, repatriation etc. which is best answered by a tax advisor/CA. I'm not really good at that. My apologies

7:40 - step 6 query Hi Shankar, thanks for the amazing video. My query is that isnt it obviously impossible to get the same or even nearly same entry point as these marquee investors since those points would hav been crossed long back and gloomy chances of looking back in rallying Nifty scenario? Then what should be the entry/exit points?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 8 ай бұрын
Most welcome. With re: your query and atleast in my case, I didn't care on finding the "perfect" entry point because if I were to even ask Vijay Kedia, Rekha Jhunjhunwala & others -- these investors aren't going to tell me. My mindset is that information is always imperfect (actually true) and I worked this model based on what & when I receive it. However imperfect, this model gave me 41% CAGR over 2 years against the Nifty 50's 12%

@Shankar - wont the exit time change for us? If we exit after such big players exit, wont the stock be down after that? Wont buying after the large investor bought raise price to higher than normal? If they got 41%, will we get 35%? Any thoughts around this point?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 10 ай бұрын
Maybe, it all depends on how you frame the problem in your head. For example -- let's say I didn't study well for an exam which means I would have ended with say, 70% marks. Now I hatch this plan to copy from a classmate but since there's an invigilator in the exam hall, I couldn't be looking at his paper all the time. Anyways, I did what I could and ended with 80% marks while the well-prepared classmate received 85% In our context, that 5% are the gaps we have to live with i.e. marquee investor could have sold on 18th of the month but you receive the information on the 30th and so on. Yes, the price might have gone up or it might have gone down .. but what I have simulated here is a system with enough stocks (57 of them) which I believe offers 80% marks when otherwise I would have received 70%

I have 1 doubt- Here's what I think, these marquee investors invest in all types of companies and not only small caps but holding >1% in small cap requires much lesser capital as compared to large cap, that's why the data showed mostly smaller companies. Am I correct? If so, is there any way to determine their holdings in large cap companies where they probably hold less than 1%?

Absolutely Amazing!!! Quite a practical approach to the stock picking... But I think the returns would drastically reduce in assumption 3 is accounted for (Delay in receipt of shareholding change data)... I believe it would be very close to actively managed small cap funds..
