Skip to 5:45 For Reaction So, back when I made my first video on One Piece about my reaction to the Final Trailer for OPLA, I mentioned at 2:24 that I had already seen One Piece up to and a little beyond Arlong Park in anticipation for the upcoming live action show. And for me, that was the end of it. With the release of the first reaction video to the anime, however, it was correctly pointed out that I had not been considerate of those who would be watching the first anime reaction video as a first time viewer. Who maybe hadn't watched from the trailer to where we are today, and might have had the expectation that I was approaching the anime totally blind. So at the time, I had wrestled with the idea of picking up reactions from episode 41 onward, but I knew people would want to see me react to the early episodes. I had a proverbial Sword of Damacles waiting above my head. My decision for putting my best foot forward was to start the series over with the intention of watching in the original Japanese. I do want to stress that these reactions ARE genuine and authentic. I've never watched One Piece with the Japanese VA until this reaction series. After Arlong Park, I will be in unfamiliar territory, though I think you'll find as the reactions continue there is less and less analysis as I start to pick up on things I missed or tuned out from the dub. It's been such an enjoyable ride so far, but I didn't want to let a narrative grow that I was somehow being disingenuous. I'm doing this for me. I'm learning how to navigate reactions as I go. I intend to one day be able to say I've helped do my part to entertain the world. This is my dream.

Highly doubt people will tell you “it’s not that deep” when it comes to this series, so go ahead and speculate and analyze to your hearts content. You’re definitely in the right mindset with how you’re approaching and dissecting the story. From just these few episodes it’s very apparent you’ll enjoy the ride. There is an amazing adventure ahead for you. Hope to see you joining us week to week readers sometime in the future when you’re all caught up.

I'm still deciding how far ahead in the anime I want to progress before I sit down to read the manga. I'd like a degree of separation, so neither is running over the top of each other. I'd also prefer to see major moments in the anime first for the weight of overall production so that I can see it later in the manga and feel the weight of artistic expression! Do you have any suggestions on that? Which did you start with? Has doing one over the other first tempered expectations or (as I'm hoping it will) enhance the overall experience?
@ReiseLukas

@@Noxiddar I started with the anime and watched over 400 episodes, but after a rough experience and quitting the story once I came back to it with the manga. Most people will probably tell you read the manga after a time skip that happens around the 400-500 episode area. The pacing slows down considerably (In the anime, Manga is fine) after the timeskip and lots of people complain about it, but that's up to you. I say do what you think is best when you get there.
@loelldebach8450
@loelldebach8450 Жыл бұрын
@Noxiddar I'd say it's best to get through the first 500 episodes before diving into the manga, its the perfect place to go back to the start, fresh. It's much faster to go through the manga, it's paced better in comparison to the anime so you'll blaze through it. If you start early then you might find it very hard to put off on reading the manga Objectively the manga is better overall.
@Noxiddar
@Noxiddar Жыл бұрын
That is my hope for it as well. As I'm pulling back layers to the One Piece universe, I find my way to the core with the manga and find more and more value as I get closer to the source. 500 sounds unimaginable at the moment, but it'll be here long before I know it!

@@Noxiddar I started with the anime. When I reached the most recent episodes at the time I switched to the manga. Since then I’ve reread and rewatched the series several times. If that’s the case I would recommend waiting till the end of a saga to go back and read it. East Blue (the first saga) is about 10-11 volumes in the manga. Not sure how much time you have to read/watch but I’d imagine it can be paced in a way that you roll right into the next saga as you finish them. And there are milestones where a reread or at least recap of certain events is warranted. Usually when we get details revealed that change the way you view things and gives you a better understanding of the story.

Very few One Piece fans will chide you for picking apart everything you see. 😅 I will also say, you're already one of the better reactors because you are actively reacting and trying to get inside the author's head. So many reactors will just passively look at the animation and get hyped by it, which is perfectly fine, but I really enjoy your personal anecdotes and pauses to examine the bits of information presented.
@Noxiddar

I'm actually really glad to hear this. I didn't want to do reactions if I didn't feel I could add anything of value. I should hope that by 1000 episodes, I'll have a style and format down! But for now, I'm happy to experiment and see what people respond to! I do want to get better at keeping video length from getting out of hand. 6 hours between recording, editing, and cataloging a video from a little over an hour of anime is kind of distressing to think about. 😅

The music this episode are among the most iconic songs in the franchise. The song that played when Shanks gave the Hat to Luffy was "To the Grandline" (which makes me cry) and the last song when Luffy fell from the sky at the end is "Overtaken". To this day those songs are a treasure to listen to. Overtaken especially will become iconic for you when you reach Arlong Park in the anime.

I think, and I didn't really draw attention to it like I wanted, but the way the music flowed almost nonstop from track to track as the episode progressed really did such a great job of setting the "dreamy" vibe with these flashbacks and moments of action. It was incredibly well done!

I appreciate that. To be honest, this will always be a weird intro that I'm not a fan of. This wasn't even about honesty, but about seeing the start of a poison in the well narrative that I was being intentionally DISHONEST, you know? For me, as a creator, I'm seeing things logically and linearly from one video to the next. It was 2 minutes into the first video I ever made about One Piece, several weeks before deciding to react to the original Japanese, that I had said I'd seen a little bit of the show before. Fast forward to the first anime reaction, and I'm being shamed and accused of personally obfuscating this truth as part of some sinister plan to hustle people. At first, I was just going to ignore this because it is factually incorrect, but I didn't want my silence to be some weird admission of guilt for a crime I'd never committed. The whole thing seemed weird since, to me, I'd never stated it was a first time viewing (which would be dishonest). I jokingly told my Discord before I posted this video: 'Top 10 Anime Betrayals move over. Meet "Guy who watched 3.7% of the anime dubbed on his second monitor before deciding to react"' It's kind of just that level of ridiculous. Thank you for seeing through it! My intention is to take the ENTIRE journey. After episode 41 or 42 (I can't remember) we'll be beyond the live action, or what fragments I picked up about the dub. Even though it's all new to me in the sub where I have to focus a little (a lot) more. Welcome along for the journey! I'm glad you're here! 🏴‍☠️

Anyone who thinks Shanks has devil fruit powers was not paying attention in this episode at all. Shanks himself states clearly that those who eat devil fruits can't swim, they sink like stones. And it shows clearly in this episode him swimming to save Luffy, who sunk like a stone after eating the Gum Gum fruit. As for Luffy's intelligence, you will see as the show goes on. Just about any an every complicated concept goes straight over his head. And in spite of what I said in a comment on your previous reaction video, I am not so sure right now that it is that he has the ability and just doesn't care. Cus even after things are explained to him in the simplest possible manner, and on the rare occasion he actually listens, he still doesn't get it. Which is why I think in most cases he doesn't care to learn. Because Luffy DOES understand himself, and knows that it is a waste of time for him. As I said this is shown more as the show goes on. Finally, if drinking juice makes me a kid, I ain't growin' up.

Exactly, I never really bought that line of thinking for that rule alone. But I definitely think it's a nod to Shanks' actual power, where we get to see a mere fraction of it in just a glance alone. I could be way off base, but it seems like using the Lord of the Coast as a measuring stick is a great way to show, while keeping things close to the vest, which seems in spirit for Shanks' character.

it's never actually said outright in the show but the author has explained how eating a devil fruit works: -you only need a single bite of the devil fruit to gain its powers -only one person living at a time can have the power of a specific fruit once its eaten, so no you can't have more people eat the rest of it or its juice, tis first come first serve -in the case multiple people found a way to eat the fruit, the power would go to whoever took the first taste even if it's only by a fraction of a second. -Devil fruits taste terrible and considering the majority of the world is ocean so the side effects aren't small so most people have reason to want to eat them either way.

Devil Fruit "rules" are as follows; 1. you only need to eat of the fruit, can be a single bite even, whomever tastes the fruit first gets the power. 2. no eating more than one fruit, if you eat a second devil fruit, the resounding power from the combined fruits would cause your body to explode. 3. each fruit has a unique power, and another of that fruit will not be found as long as the current user lives. 4. in exchange for this power, the seas will hate you and try to recover the fruit, sea water will weaken you and you cant swim.

It crossed a line. But now we are back on the voyage, and like you said, it's experiencing a whole new format of storytelling with the Japanese VA! So this actually gets explained in an SBS contained in the manga volumes; Devil Fruit powers can only go to one user. It doesn't matter how much you eat, the first one to take a bite reaps the benefits, and then it's just a really bad-tasting fruit. If two people take a bite of the same fruit at the same time, the powers go to the first to swallow. I have to imagine it'd be the same with Devil Fruit juice. Also, Shanks CAN'T have a Devil Fruit power, at least not any kind we've seen, since he was able to swim to save Luffy.

This will forever be a mental checkpoint along the journey where I have to keep in mind that when I share ideas that others present (that I don't ascribe to) people don't realize that unless I very clearly articulate it. This is a thought that other people had about Shanks. It was something I saw from others, like me, who had never seen One Piece before watching the live action, and so I was carrying that conversation over to the anime and picking it up in the middle of said conversation without better explaining why I brought it up. But it's always nice to see clarification! I think my main thrust was supposed to resemble something more like: "While I understand that Shanks does not have Devil Fruit powers, I'd been watching others get tripped up at this point in a few of the live action reactions I've watched from first time viewers where he stares down the Lord of the Coast, assuming he had Devil Fruit powers. I actually tend to think this is something much more primal and innate than a gifted power." This is probably what I wanted to articulate, but brain fog, bright lights, and overstimulating colors and sound does not often a coherent thought make. Haha.

Since you asked: Howmuch do you have to eat and can you share the DF, its not a major spoiler, but the show does inform you about this later. so the answer is down below Spoilerish ↓↓↓↓↓ 1 tiny bite from a DF fruit is enough, first one to eat is the one to get the powers

one piece aired at an interesting time in history because at this point most localizations made their own custom openings for. The most infamous is the 4kids pirate rap we got for the (original) English dub but there are two others that also stand out. The German opening and the Italian opening. All three of these do have the essence of one piece in them but from different origins and they are all vastly different experiences to the original opening 1
@Noxiddar
@Noxiddar Жыл бұрын
I had no idea they had so many variant openings. That's awesome. As someone who watched Fox Kids and Disney's One Saturday Morning. I get it. They were whacky times in America at the turn of the century. Haha! I'll always have a special place in my heart for Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog!

You can definitely infer power level from how high the bounty is. But it's really a designation of how high of a threat the world government believes that person is _to the World Government._ Think of it as the difference between a drug lord and a traitorous spy. The drug lord might be stronger but the spy's bounty would probably be higher because they know more government secrets.

It really was failure of due diligence to inform everyone at the beginning of the first reaction video, but I don't regret having chosen to have the dub on for background noise. It's not like I was watching it all the time. I will say that I do prefer the subs now that I've started it just because I feel like I can focus on the details in a way where the dub was too distracting. I can hear how the soundtrack plays with the originally delivered lines, and how the sound effects and use of silence give gravitas to a scene, where in the dub I was just waiting for the story to move. I think a huge difference is also in how I approached it. The dub was to get an idea of how whacky I could expect things. But with the sub, I am currently appreciating how wonderful things currently are with the understanding that it only gets better!

If u notice shanks is in the ocean when he saves luffy. I think that gave the wrong perception in the live action.
@Noxiddar

Right. I must have worded my thoughts all wonky. I myself never thought he was a devil fruit user, this was just something fresh in my mind from watching other people react to the live action. I'll probably have to restate this in a thousand different ways over the course of this video's lifespan too. Haha. I posit that he has an unpronounced form of power (aura) if you will, that feels primal, the way an animal detects danger. They can sense Shanks is a dangerous man, where Mountain Bandits can't intuit that for themselves. I guess I didn't explain that clear enough. RIP.

If you're gonna go on monologues for a whole minute you might want to take the habit to pause the episode, it's really distracting to see important scenes unfold while you're talking to the camera. I do think it's more entertaining to watch people who think about what they're experiencing and can give some feedback, but watching the episode unfold in the meantime is just painful, doesn't matter how well people think they can multitask Anime/manga east blue deceptively differs from the live action too, so you might think you know what's coming and can go on anecdotes in the meantime when the anime actually has important stuff that was cut out. Not necessarily obvious in the first couple episodes but it'll become more than clear starting with Buggy and Usopp's arcs
@Noxiddar
@Noxiddar Жыл бұрын
The last time I multitasked on purpose, I left a spoon in my hot chocolate in the microwave, while letting the sink fill up with water for dishes that then overflowed onto the carpet I was vacuuming. I can guarantee I was only doing one thing at a time in that video. 🤣 I'm more than happy to pause more, and I thank you for volunteering to take the time out of your busy schedule to edit down my 3 to 4 hours of recording for a few episodes of anime! I'm not going to please anyone doing anything in any way. That's the nature of putting things out to the public. You're not wrong to recommend this.. in fact, it's good advice. But between the both of us, I'm the only one that knows what that would really entail. And I don't want to burn myself out before we leave the East Blue. I appreciate you checking out the reaction, even if it wasn't to your liking though!

I wonder if I was positing it because I wanted to tie it back to the Live Acfion, and that was the first thing I remember people discussing. So, I probably passed it off like it was my theory when I was just making chit-chat. You're all good! I don't even mind if people think I misunderstood because there are a lot of Live Action only people who may not have caught that since it wasn't really explained very well. So these comments really are helpful! I appreciate you taking the time to clarify!🙏 ☝️✌️🏴‍☠️
