yeahh ive been learning it for along time, but there are no schools around that teaches drunken fist. i have videos, friends and the influence of one of my best friend's tae kwon do masters to influence me. i have been reading and understanding the phylosophy of drunken fist, learning the forms, moves, strength, chi(energy/strength) in ur body, and overall mental and physical exercises to be a master of shaolin zui quan, i know im not much of any help but that's how im learning.

Yes very much so. I have in fact used this style during a tournament where I was confident I was going to beat my opponent hands down and did it for teh lulz. It is all about making your opponent think they have an advantage and then striking hard and fast. It is also fairly good for dodging attacks. There are probably videos of people using this in competition if you want to see for yourself how effective it can be.

it takes alot more than a video to learn drunken fist. you need to be flexible, have a strong core, and preferably an iron head. Drunken fist is one of the hardest forms out there and you have to be extremely balanced.

The basic principles: Getting splashed with cold water, getting up early and intense training to strengthen the spirit. Getting hit with split bamboo sticks to make skin less sensitive. Experiencing impact on the stomach while exercising makes them tougher, which protects your organs. Hitting hard objects repetitively makes the skeleton harder and less likely to be injured. The first can be learned in a couple of months, the second and third takes years, the fourth takes decades.

Tsots: Sorry this was long ago back I guess 1982? Master Chul Koo Yung. He was 45 at the time, and had all his life. He was at a level and position that others came from other states for testing to 3rd and 4th dan if Irecall. I was fortunate enough to assist in the tests. Man. Hours and hours multiple days. We learned Hapkido as a sidebar, and as I was 'strapping young man' groan guess who he would use. My wrists hurt to this day. I imagine he's up around 9th? as honorary every 10 years?

Jackie Chan only does that in movies,in real life he wouldn't drink to fight.I asked my shifu who is a Shaolin monk and he said that you should only pretend to be drunk. But most probably the person or persons who invented the style drank when they fought, but that was a long time ago. There is one legend about the 8 drunk immortals and there are also many other legends that explains how the style was invented.

yeah but then again most people already know drunken fist is powerful. It's very popular and well liked among people who know nothing about martial arts even. And when someone goes to use it, I'm pretty sure they won't be underestimated. Besides in a fight, wouldn't it be wise to never underestimate any opponent? Although getting someone to underestimate you like a fool does sound pretty useful.

The word chakra has Indian (sanskrit) origins, in Chinese it's called dantien and in Japanese hara. Dantien/hara is actually a different concept than chakra, but it's they're similar. The principle is that the dantien are sources of three different types of energy: jing, chi and shen that flow through the body. Jing is sexual energy, chi is life force and shen is spirit. Chinese martial arts is centered around building up and molding those energies into ki (solidity) and wuji (emptiness).

I think people take the 'drunken' part too seriously. It's a simple tactic. Act drunk so that your opponents think you'll be an easy target, then you unleash your full focused aggression since he'll be off guard, thinking you're too intoxicated to be a threat.

@poemalocko That was his kata.... He obviously won't take time if a fight arises to fake a drinking binge. Drunken fighting is used to deceive opponents. I've seen fights with one competitor being of the drunken style; the other fighter's are usually hesitant because you don't know what the hell will happen.

@43black17, you are right and wrong. Yes, MMA contains bits and peices of various arts, but since when were the legitimacy of martial arts determined from who can hit the hardest? (especially ninjutsu, which emphasizes deceptive and stealthy attacks). Like any other pair of martial arts, there are many kung fu practitioners who can school MMA competitor, and vise-versa. Since most of these martial arts are used sparingly in warfare nowadays, M.A tend towards self improvement and not killing

@Natos72 well I only say that about MMA because seems like your moves would be less predictable with MMA if the person didn't know what style you were going to use next. But that's just to make it LESS predictable because it seems like the only way it should be predictable is by the style because should all your hits be unpredictable nomatter what style you use? If Drunken fist is a style, then won't it eventually become predictable? Unpredictable can be unaffective too sometimes.

this is modern wushu, most of it is just to impress viewers. for me its more for conditioning and exercise. however, within the form itself where the modern form may have been derived from, there may be combative applications. i mean if you did this, you would have to have extremely fast reflexes. real fights don't look this pretty. i love this form, but its more modern day sport wushu
