Shapeoko HDM: The Most Powerful Benchtop CNC We've Ever Made

We had a thought: what if we took a Shapeoko and upgraded everything- the linear bearings, the extrusions, the ballscrews, the motors, the spindle- and then delivered it on a pallet, almost ready-to-run. The result is Shapeoko HDM, the most accurate and powerful CNC router we can make.

Yes! The ultimate Shapeoko. I've always thought of converting mine with ballscrews and linear rails ever since I got, but never had the guts to do it. Well here it is! It looks great!

I don't think a laser would ever be added from shapeoko. You can always just buy one to attach. Could be wrong though. Maybe they will one day

Nice! I would also be good to have the option to have the table made out of a coolant compatible material, as it would be easy to add flood coolant (or even mist coolant) to a machine like this!

Damn! Looks like I'll need to overlook my future ideas for a shop build! I'm just running out of room as it is! And here I was just talking to my Wife this morning about the concept of using Screw Jacks (Air Force Lingo) for precision work that will never fail! Hours later, here I'm on KZbin watching just what I was in conversation about this morning. Go figure, eh!

$1K less than a tormach PCNC440. The tormach is 500 lbs of steel so it's hardly a desktop machine, but it only has half the power of the Shapeoko! Much better rigidity for steel no doubt. Interesting comparison.

Can you mount stock vertically to cut into the ends? Mounting vertically meaning the end of a longer piece of stock (like a rail for furniture) is planar with the bed.
@carbide3d

There is a small amount of overhang possible but not enough to cut a very thick board. If you have a pass-through or hole in your workbench, you could conceivably remove one of the hybrid table slats though and stick the board through that way.

Looks like a solid if not small build machine, but for 5k I would really have expected at least a 2/3 bit auto bit change option built in. Nice to see you transition away from routers as standard though considering about 70% of people upgrade to them after about a year anyway.
