I forgot to put a few important variations in this video. If I'm using heavier weight I almost always take out the renegade row and replace it with a gorilla row, it just feels a lot better and I seem to get more out of them. Also, you can do this with one kettlebell, creating an offset load and giving you the option of doing a reverse lunge after the clean as opposed to a squat. This is good for those who want split stance strength for athletics.

With one kettlebell, do you just do a normal pushup at the bottom of the movement? I only have one kettlebell to work with so trying to figure out how to adapt this movement unilaterally.
@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey Күн бұрын
@ You can do an offset deficit push up with only one hand on the kettlebell as long as this is comfortable for you. You could also set the kettlebell down to the side and do a normal push up. A lot of people also like to emphasize the triceps by setting the kettlebell down on its side just under the center of the chest, then putting both hands on the bell portion of the kettlebell in a diamond shape and do a diamond push up. Its really just up to you.

I do a variation of man makers, instead of a thrusted, I do a dumbbell clean to raise them to shoulder level, then I do a back lunge, return to stand position, do a shoulder press, then a back lunges with the other leg, back to stand position and then a shoulder press (push press if I am really tired) and then all the process starting with the burpee and the renegade rows

Great exercise. Only thing I would be cautious of using kettlebells is 1) make sure the kettbell has a flat bottom and use it on a flat hard surface (i.e. not on matts) since you don't want the kettlebell to roll over and snap your wrists. 2) start with lightweights and learning the double clean properly, because when standing up from the lower squat, you need to make sure your swing the kettlebells between your legs from a hinged position to avoid lower back injury.

Gorilla makers are more for the advanced. I've done them with kettlebells and with dumbbells, they do take some coordination but basically you would do a gorilla push-up, that is plyometric where you clap your chest muscles with your hands and then when you stand up to your feet you do a gorilla row with each hand. Some people do man makers with their feet on a physio ball just for the added core challenge but of course you're not going to get much in the realm of strength or hypertrophy out of such I also really like the press up to pull up variation where you put on a weighted vest, do a squat thrust which is basically a push-up and then you jump to your feet and stand up, and then pull yourself up on the pull-up bar just above you, and of course if you need to, you are free to jump but it will interfere with your time because you want to feel balanced when you pull up with a weighted vest on so enjoy the lung burning effect

Lol, I can't believe anyone noticed. I'm impressed at your attention to detail. As for the single kettlebell, I honestly like to do these with just one kettlebell sometimes. Unilateral work is great for correcting imbalances and adding some extra oblique work. I don't even usually use a push up handle, I just do an off-set deficit push up and make sure I alternate sides after each rep. I also like to use just one kettlebell sometimes so I can clean straight into a reverse lunge instead of the squat. It's one of my favorite variations. Try it out and see what you think!

These are pretty tiring even at lower reps. I usually see this done with heavier weight (usually whatever kettlebells or dumbbells you can press for maybe 8 reps) for 5-8 reps at a time. Or I see it done with a medium weight (usually something you can press 12-15 times) for 10-20 reps. In both cases you can aim for 2-3 sets. A third option I've done as well is to turn this into an EMOM workout. Do 1 or 2 full reps every minute on minute for 10-20 minutes.

@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey 3 күн бұрын
I've had the most trouble with rotational exercises and deep squats. For the rotational exercises I just have to be a lot more mindful of my form. But I've omitted all weighted deep squat work from my routine, its just caused to much trouble too often. Instead I do things that give me good stimulus without going deep, like kettlebell swings or quarter squats. I still do deep stance work in both lunges and squats with just bodyweight though. Generally any weighted squat below 90 degrees is going to put a ton of pressure on the meniscus. Hope this helps out, best of luck!

So if you were writing a program that was just burpees and swings, how would you write it? How many days per week? How many sets? How many reps if it would be different per each goal, etc. Cuz I imagine how it should be programmed for a overweight beginner who's trying to get fit versus a fit guy who's trying to be more athletic is slightly different
@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey 2 күн бұрын
It would largely depend on the capacities of the person. You could easily do 3 days a week, 3 sets of 50 burpees and 3 sets of heavy kettlebell swings for maybe 20 reps. If you were overweight you would likely start out slower or you could do EMOM's to spread out the work and get more total calories burned. Something like 3 burpees and 3 swings every minute on the minute for 10 minutes and slowly increase it to 20 minutes. Once its to 20 minutes you could start adding reps.

Can you discuss more about torn meniscus
@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey 2 күн бұрын
It usually limits deep squatting and sometimes deep lunges. These positions put a lot of pressure on the meniscus. Also rotational exercise can be aggravating. I work around it by doing exercises that keep me out of deep positions. Things like kettlebell swings, quarter squats, split squats, deadlifts. I also do a lot of boxing which has been difficult because of the constant twisting and rotating, But I've just gotten a good knee brace and become a lot more mindful of how I move my knee. Hope this helps out.

Awesome video. I'm wondering about the weight. I am 75 kg (165 lbs) and quite active. I added kettlebells into my regular routine and while in the gym I swing with 24 kg (53 lbs) in home I do 16 kg (35 lbs) and still feel the work being done. To make a push up with 16 kg (35 lbs) sounds good but I might get tired faster. But to do it with 12 kg (26 lbs) seems like I wont have enough stability going down on the pushup. I'm wondering as I want to upgrade my home gym but not sure whether to get another 16 kg or buy two 24 kg, or maybe two 12 kg?
@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey 2 күн бұрын
The limiting factors in this exercise is usually the press or the renegade row, they tend to be the weakest link. Some people choose to go heavier and just do 5-8 reps of this, which is still exhausting for sure. But others go for a longer stamina building, calorie burning workout with a medium weight, often 10-20 reps. So if you go on the heavy side it will be around whatever weight you are capable of pressing for about 8 reps. As far as getting new kettlebells for the home gym, there is always the option to get adjustable kettlebells. I switched to those after kettlebells started taking up too much of my floor space. My first one was from amazon and went from 20-53 pounds. Worked well for awhile but the shape was a little awkward. Now I have one from bells of steel that goes from 12kg-32kg. More expensive up front but saves space and saves money in the long run.

You can always do this with one kettlebell at a time as well.

I'll give these a try with kettlebells, but in the privacy of my own home. I'm so damn manly already, I wouldn't want to embarrass the poor folks at the gym.

Would you say KB swings and KB man makers could be enough for someone short in time but wants to stay fit to still play sports after 40s?
@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey 3 күн бұрын
Definitely, though for athletic reasons I would switch up variations of this throughout the week. For instance if you were to do this twice a week I would do it as shown in this video once and the other day I would use a single kettlebell and do a racked reverse lunge after the clean instead of a squat. This way you mix in some offset load and some split stance work which is so important for athletics.

Been thinking about getting a kettlebell. This is making me consider getting two! Just wondering how heavy.
@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey 2 күн бұрын
it can be different for everyone, though for men I would say the most indispensable set is usually 16kg kettlebells. You could also go for the adjustable bells. More expensive up front but after you get two of them you will likely never need another. Mine are the bells of steel adjustable kettlebells I linked in the description box. They go from 12kg to 32kg. But if you wanted to start cheaper I would get two 16kg competition style kettlebells. Still a little pricey but you kind find good ones for $60-70 dollars usually.

I tried the last variation with a gorilla row in the gym the other day .I did five reps 3 times and i was blowing out of my arse afterwards. I put this down to being 58 but maybe it was also because its a hard exercise. I have raised blood pressure so maybe i should stick to the first one as you mentioned it.

I wanna know what you think about burpees on their own, or with a weighted vest? I used to do them a lot for wrestling, and now that I’ve been out of school for a bit, I wanna get back into them.

They are a great exercise. You don't need anything else other than a small open floor space and some will power and they are great for conditioning. And because they are bodyweight its easier to use them for athletic gains. I know a lot of wrestlers I've worked with do burpees like a sprawl to get some sport specific training in with their conditioning. Burpess are excellent and so are man makers, just depends on what adaptations you're looking for. I felt bad bashing on burpees a little in this video, but I was goofing off a lot because this other version is called man makers and I wanted to have some fun with it.

What starting weight of kettlebell would you recommend for the secret sauce variant?
@moversodyssey
@moversodyssey 3 күн бұрын
It's going to depend on the person and how versed you are in kettlebells. But without knowing anything else about a person I would suggest 16kg as the most common weight. Heavy enough to feel the work and stimulate muscles but light enough to work your way up in reps and really start to build stamina and burn calories.

Get a heavier KB, perform 10 swings. Then 5 burpees. 10 rounds. Try not to rest. Another top of ever minute you do 10 swings followed by 5 burpees. What ever time you have left is your rest periods.
