I am following along with Greenlight surf supply's masterclass in how to shape a surfboard. I used a PU surfboard blank that already had a partially domed deck, which made for a difficult time for me getting the rails the way I wanted. Otherwise, the process went pretty smoothly.

Hi mate, pretty impressed for first hand shape.. Good job not over shaping your rails and distorting outline as most newbie's will do.. Small tip.. Brace up your stands more.. Sturdy racks makes all shaping and sanding way easier.. 👍

Thanks Stephen! I’ve been meaning to do that and have been putting it off. Thanks for the advice. I didn’t consider that it’d make a big difference but of course that will make a huge difference! I will do that as soon as I can! 🙏🏽

@@paulzeye_surfboards lol, well the only one i have found though. The rest, under the title "hand made", there is always a planer and a ton of power tools. I know, it is because now there are CNC machines and that's why they call it "hand made" even though there are power tools involved in the process.

@@Fitandover40 very trueeee! That’s a good point! I bought a cheap electric planer after the these first couple of boards. It takes a LONG time to sand down from a 4” SUP to a 2 5/8 thickness. Probably won’t be shaping without the planer now 😅 Cheers 🍻

@@Fitandover40using a planer doesn’t mean a board is no longer hand made. The planer is the most accurate tool in a shapers arsenal. Using all hand tools leads to inconsistencies and a crap ton of wasted time. If someone is scrubbing their whole CNC board with a planer, they’re probably doing it wrong.

@@Psyched-Surf in MY VIEW as soon as I use a power tool it is no longer "hand shaped". I understand what you say and it is perhaps true for you, for ME, POWER TOOLS EQUAL NO 100% HAND MADE. And you won't convince me otherwise. There is another guy that shapes a board in 20 min with only a small hand planer and a block, that for me is HAND SHAPED. Thanks.

Hey mate, so I am in the process of shaping my first board. I have a question, how do find the apex of your rail? I mean how high is that firts mark and how much margin for the apex do you leave up to the bottom line of the apex?, do I explain myself? Thanks

I think I know what you mean. It depends on how much you want the deck to be domed. Green light surf supply has a good chart I can link. Hopefully the link works: greenlightsurfsupply.com/pages/surfboard-building-guide-page-2

Hey Soji, there is another video titled “Fun Acrylic Paint Art on Surfboard with Glassing of Bottom and Deck”. It doesn’t include all the steps, just the glassing part. 🙂

Hihi.......Hand shaping at present place and time is becoming a lost art due to aku shaper........I wanted to share a little trick that might make your journey more enjoyable........I noticed you struggling a bit with your stringer planer.....There are two other brands that are more efficient, BUT what I use for the past 5 decades is a kama.....This was taught to me by RB in the mid 70's .......not only will it plane and shape stringers like butter, it is soooo sharp that it will shave PU foam effortlessly........(I'm referring to the part of your vid where you're adding in tail rocker....after you're stringer went down, all that foam you sanded and blocked.......could have been a nice meditative stroll with the kama.........yes in reality I would have grabbed my electric planer and lightly back-bladed ....get it close then hit it with the kama and finish with the block...........okay, stay psyched.......get a kama......you'll be super delighted.......

Hey! Thank you for that information. I recently sharpened the blades bc I got the shaping kit all used and didn’t realize how dull it was. It still gouges into eps but cuts the stringer like butter. I have not tried it on a PU board yet, but I’m hoping it does better the next time I do. Where can I buy a Kama planer? I have googled it and can’t seem to find it. I will definitely look more into that brand. I really appreciate people who share useful information even though they don’t have to. Thank you again!

Hihi.......LoL......Sorry, I forgot you're from the pacific NW......we're from Hawaii and work in the surf industry........a kama is a vintage japanese wooden block planer....usually measures about 4" x 10".....it was a staple craftsmans tool in the 60's in Hawaii....... all the ones I own have blades that are embossed with Kanji, so you know it was made in Japan.....the tempering of these blades make them sharper than razors.....After Dick Brewer shared this with me while he honed and dialed in a tailblock of a board......I started using it ever since.....like I said it will shave PU foam as easy as a potato peeler skins a potato.......RB wouldn't mind me sharing this trade secret.....now that he's gone..........pm me if you can't find one....I'm sure in this day and age there are many knockoffs and copies......but if you do get a legit one, you'll quickly see it's as sharp as a real deal authentic samurai sword........@@paulzeye_surfboards

@ftaks3675 I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for one! It’s quickly becoming apparent how costly (time & money) to be a backyard shaper! There are so many different tools one needs to collect over time. I’ve only been shaping and glassing for a few months now and am super stoked on the process. I’m trying my best to be patient and remind myself that it takes time to collect all the nice tools and tips for the trade. I wonder if there are any Kama-like brands here that are authentic. I have a woodworking friend that might know! Where can I DM you with future questions?

sorry bra ....we speak pidgen english ova hea........correct spelling is kanna......you can google japanese woodworking tools and source one.........i'm sure price will dictate blade quality........not sure if you have one, but we also use a japanese compass hand planer with curved bottom for hitting stringer on nose on the deck.........I watched the way you move and I think the KANNA would benefit you immensely.......

@@ftaks3675 😆 yeah I did a hack job with all that. It was also because the blade was very dull. I feel I’ve some what improved using a hand plane, but definitely have a good ways to go. I will look into the compass plane. Thank you! 🙏🏽
