I wish we could have seen Wilt play in the 1980s and 90s. From what he, Russell, and many others attest, Wilt Chamberlain had so much more power that was never really seen. Wilt purposed not to play a physical smash mouth game because it wasn't needed and it wouldn't have been appreciated in those years. By his own words, he purposed to be more of a finesse player of skill rather than intimidation. Moreover, he had the power to really hurt people. The players in his era were not as athletic or big, and this would not have been a good look. It would have been like beating up your little brother. Watch some of the other youtube stories of how strong, powerful, and fast Wilt was, and I think you will not think twice that he was capable of dominating Shaq who I also have much respect for as a great player, especially during his younger years. Wilt and Russell said they would have purposely wore Shaq out by making him run his legs off. Wilt played the whole game which something Shaq and many others could never do. I think if we saw Wilt play in the 80s and 90s we would have seen an even better Wilt Chamberlain. Maybe not the high scoring, but more of his skills would have been on display and developed at a higher level.

Wilt was not built for power. He had very long legs so he was cut high. He did not have the base to go power against the elite player of that era. Shaq would have zero problem with Wilt. Wilt would have looked a lot like Shawn Bradley to Shaq. Someone he can get lower than and just move around. I'm not saying Wilt was Shawn Bradley's caliber as a player.

The huge mistake Skip makes is judging Kareem by his 1980's version. The 1970's Kareem would school Shaq and the 1960's Wilt runs Shaq into the ground.
@benyah33902 жыл бұрын
No he wouldn't because Kareem couldn't handle physicality. That's what seperates Dream from Kareem vs. Shaq. Kareem couldn't handle Shaq whereas Olajuwon held his own. And *no* version of Kareem was so quick that he could give Shaq a problem like a prime David Robinson or Hakeem. Moses Malone gave the blueprint on how to handle Kareem. Unless Kareem developed that hook shot good enough from the 3 point line, Kareem couldn't do anything with Shaq offensively, and definitely not defensively.
@saverioman2 жыл бұрын
@@benyah3390 Yes, it's hard to imagine that Kareem could stop Shaq defensively. I disagree on the offense-side: The Kareem/Lew Alcindor of the early 1970's has no problem scoring on Shaq. As a young man he had a much more versatile offensive game that the mid-1980's version that mainly shot sky hooks. Moses Malone did have Kareem's number, but by that time Kareem (who came up in 1969) was in his 14th season while Moses was in his MVP prime...not a fair comparison. I think the one guy who Shaq would have struggled with is a prime Wilt Chamberlain, who was just as strong as Shaq (maybe stronger), more skilled and much fitter (he averaged almost 12 more minutes per game than Shaq). There's no chance Shaq could keep up with him for 48 minutes.
@benyah33902 жыл бұрын
@@saverioman I'm not arguing Shaq vs. Wilt because I really don't know if Wilt was more myth or legend. As far as Moses & Kareem, Kareem came in '69 & Malone out of high school '74. That's only 5 years difference. Prime for prime, Kareem's weakness was lack of strength and power. People keep talking about LA Shaq, but Orlando Shaq was a beast as well. Orlando Shaq did better on Hakeem than I think LA Shaq would've done because LA Shaq was 330-350. That's 30-50 pounds more to carry around than during his Orlando days. Hakeem would have roasted him even worse because slimmer Shaq couldn't keep up with Dream. Kareem couldn't do anything with any version of Shaq because Shaq isn't going to just sit there and allow him to shoot in his comfort zone. Wilt probably would torch LA Shaq as well, but Orlando Shaq is a different story. But my main argument was prime Hakeem vs. Prime Kareem with all things being equal as in swap their careers and Dream would have more hardware than Kareem did if he played in Milwaukee & LA, and Kareem would have less because I really don't think he'd win any of Olajuwon's rings. *Maybe* vs. Ewing & the Knicks; but definitely not against Orlando Shaq.

I was born in 1991 and grew up in LA and Shaq in his prime was seriously unbelievable. He was literally doubled or tripled teamed every time he touched the ball and if he was single-covered, 'FUHGET ABOUT IT'. It was over. He would've backed up the dude 5-6 feet towards the basket and found a way to get an easy shot off or dunked on you.

Chamberlain weighed over 300 lb (310-320) at 7'1" (Shaq was 7'0" and weighed about 330). Chamberlain is generally regarded as the strongest player who ever played the game--and had incredible endurance. He played one season without missing a minute of play (except for about 7 minutes when he got thrown out of a game), averaging 48.5 minutes a game for the whole season of 79 complete games! He had great endurance. Shaq did not; he'd get winded quite easily. He'd never keep up with Wilt. The guy here who's calling Shaq the greatest center ever is well off the mark, knows little about Wilt, and keeps dispensing him unjustifiably with his poor wisecracks.

Wilt didn't even really play the strength game like Shaq did so that's a moot point. He wasn't even over 300 lbs until he was a Laker with declining athleticism. He had gangly legs compared Shaqs bigger lower torso/Center of gravity. Shaq entered the nba at like 7'1" 320lbs.
