I was very fortunate to have watched Kareem in his hay day with the Lakers prior to acquiring a 6'9" point guard out of Michigan State named Magic Johnson, transforming the Lakers into as we know them, Showtime. Before him we've never seen, let alone heard of a 6'9" point guard. Usually if you're that tall back then you're either playing in the paint, or as a power forward. Magic revolutionized the position and the game....while along with Larry Bird, helped bring basketball out of the dark ages of taped delayed games that used to be commonplace back then. Also, what Magic did his rookie year in the NBA Finals: Game 6 at Philly, will go down as not just the greatest game ever for a rookie (42 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, while lining up at center for an injured Kareem, ended up playing all 5 positions on the floor in 47 minutes, winning Finals MVP...still the only rookie ever to have done so), but one of the best ever in Finals lore, period. Also factor in his 3 times a league MVP, 3 times Finals MVP, 5 NBA Titles (Including back to back titles in 86-87 and 87-88) in 9 trips, 2 time All-Star MVP, 12 time NBA All-Star, member of the original Dream Team, all-time NBA 50th and 75th Anniversary team member, and still has the single season franchise steals records (208 in 81-82, as well as highest steals average 3.43 per game in 80-81), shows he was a very underrated defensive player...which he made NBA All-Defensive Teams 9 times.

As a 61 yr old native Los Angeles Lakers fan. I began watching and loving the Lakers and Chick Hearns way back in the mid 70's and other than Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics, no franchise in NBA history, in my opinion, has the lineage of big men as the Los Angeles Lakers does. Mikan, Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar, Thompson, Shaq, Gasol, D. Howard, and now A. Davis, it doesn't get any better than that. So for you two to have this time together, and I know this was an issue with you, I've seen and heard you talk about this subject many, many times, but for you to be able to clear the air is priceless, and for us die hard Lakers fans, it warms my heart to see this happen. Well done sir. Well done to you both! You both are Lakers Royalty and you should be. As a kid growing up watching the Lakers, Kareem's shy hook was the most imitated shot, other than me wanting to be Dr. J, or the Iceman George Gervin, The Sky Hook was the shot, and no one dominated the paint more than you. I don't care what era you're from, when you had the ball in the paint, it was BBQ Chicken Wing Time. Whoever was down there trying to defend, Forgetaboutit! It's amazing seeing it on youtube. Akeem great defender eventually but he had no clue to even slow Kareem down at age 37. He average like high 30s those to years. Ironically the reason Housron beat LA in the playoffs is because their coach Fitch took Akeem off of Jabbar and let Sampson play center.

Kareem scored 50 pts on Wilt in 1972. He scored 46 on Akeem Olajawon in 1986. Another game he put 43 pts on him. He also scored 40 pts on Ewing that same season. That is pretty incredible to span eras and still lord over the center position like Jabbar.

The thing that always impressed me the most about the greatest big men is the footwork. These mountains of men moving with grace and finesse as they move past and around defenders to find their way to the rim is hard to match, and to do it with the touch that Kareem had at the rim is unmatched. Just imagine how dominant Shaq would've been if he had Kareem's work ethic but I really can't fault a guy who still wanted to enjoy his life, especially considering he was still that good with the amount of work he was putting in.

Bird was a little better than Magic. It was close but remember Larry was the one who set the standard. Johnson eventually improved his game enough that he just equaled Bird in 1987. By that time Larry had already won 3 MVPs.

@@YaThat. I really question why some are so high on shaq. A center who won zero rebound titles and zero block titles. I'm told that I should use the eye test to see how dominant shaq is, as the eye test supposedly shows how physical he is and how much defensive attention he drew away from teammates. But the "eye test" makes it worse for shaq. You just see every time he gets it in the post, he dips his shoulder and bumps defenders out of position, which in a normal circumstance is a charge. But they let shaq get away with it, so he can be a star. Can't do that for rebound titles or block titles though.
