I would like to see the NBA recognizing the best All-Star performances with a simple small badge on the jersey of that player, for winning a dunk contest, 3 point shootout or MVP. Individual accolades to brag about. Players would love to point to their jersey during the season, similar to how they point out how many rings they got. Imagine a vet like bron having a bunch of "medals" on his jersey like a decorated veteran, pointing to them after a highlight dunk. Or like an aircombat ace having killmarks on their plane to show off.

Bars been set so high it’s hard to bring dunks that haven’t been seen. Can’t show up and recycle old dunks people will just complain. Vince Carter took Dunk contest to new heights then u had J Rich. Dwight Howard Nate Robinson had unique angle as well. Once Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon did what they did they really set bar very high that nobody got nothing to top that.

You have to consider the fact that every dunk champion since Vince and MJ would always be compared to the peak or heyday. There is no way to win for current NBA players, if Ja Morant came and won the competition giving it all, they’ll say he wasn’t as good as MJ or Vince. The media, the fans and the old heads gonna talk smack if you win or if you lose. Why go thought all this if you can chill at home for a week and get back to competing for a chip which is the ultimate goal.

I think a big reason why stars aren't participating in the dunk contest is also due to their significantly larger contracts. Back in the day, the award was a huge chunk of their yearly salary when everyone was making < $1 million/year. Nowadays $1 million is bench warmers salaries. Starters are making 5 times as much. They probably lose more in poker hands.

Exactly. They have nothing to gain and lots to lose. In addition to potentially getting injured in the contest and messing up their money, imagine losing to some 8th man in a rotation? And you're a supermax player? You'll never hear the end of that shit online. I wouldn't do it either if I'm already a star and getting paid. I'd only be worried about getting that next contract. A big contract is generational money now. It sucks for us fans though, as no one cares about the dunk contest these days. It was the highlight of the all-star weekend, and now it's dead. 3 point contest is now more exciting.

It is not only the players. The league is giving out techs for "taunting" and other "vulgar displays of confidence." Everybody today wants the game to be softer so the children can watch and be happy to get their participation trophies. This is probably the best time ever to be a human being. We don't live "hard" lives anymore, and being "soft" is what works today. The people complaining are old people stuck in their "back in the good ole days" phase and people who have antisocial tendencies.

There are three ways to improve regardless of what you are doing. You can learn from somebody, train, and compete. Of the three, only one will truly push you to become better. Training is great, and there's nothing wrong with challenging yourself, but while training and learning make you better, they are not a true test of what you can do. You have to pit yourself against others in order to truly gauge what your learning and training have accomplished, and see areas you may need to improve you may have not notice before. These guys don't want to grow, improve, practice,or compete. They just want money for doing as little as possible, which is the reason they are nowhere near the athletes of the past. People throwing around that narrative are insane.
