Best Rodman story ever was from his first season with the Bulls. Mid-season, they wind up having two days off, so Dennis tells Phil Jackson “I’ll be in Vegas”. Two days go by, morning of game day…no Worm. Jerry Krause sends Michael on his private plane to Vegas to go get Dennis. Michael winds up tracking him down, it’s obvious he hasn’t slept in 2 days, still drunk and likely still high on coke. Michael gets him on the plane, they make it back to Chicago just in time. Dennis, still on zero sleep, goes out, pulls 18 boards, goes back to the locker room, no shower, gets dressed and heads to the club. By the time Jack Haley caught up with him, Dennis is at the club with a fine looking woman under each arm. Legend.

I respect what Paul's saying... though I'd encourage people to check out Dennis particularly in the mid 90s with The Bulls. Anytime that MJ or Scottie or one of the wings had an "off" night you'd see it: Dennis would start shooting. Even threes. He was very mindful about "balance" and if the offense was cooking he'd chill... if they needed help he'd start putting them up. I believe that, if Dennis had wanted to, he could have put up 15 a game... but between Joe, Zeke, and Vinnie - between Sean Elliot and David - between MJ, Pip, and Ron Harper this guy knew that what they NEEDED was a guy that could guard 3, 4, and 5 on all of those teams: not another person fighting for offensive touches.

He had the ability to change a game, solo, without scoring. It's unique. That being said, todays game has that rule where you have to let people run around without touching them, hand checking is out, fouls are called for everything, refs are biased drama queen manipulating tyrants, and offense/defense is run completely different. Would love to hear Kerr break down what he would do if he had Rodman on his team today. (For hypothetical, if they did a time travel swap with Draymond.) How would Rodman attack the changes in the game and adjust his work accordingly. (This is a guy who would count rotations on a guy’s jumper in warmups and use it to figure out where the rebound was likely to go.) Remember Kerr won titles with Phil (who coached Worm at his best) and with Pop (who had a nightmare of a time), AND played with AND against Rodman, so he is probably the most uniquely qualified to weigh in on a scenario like this. Would LOVE to hear this.

Lets not just talk off the cuff without serious reflection...and lets not forget Rodman could score the ball IF HE WANTED TO!!! He wanted to win championships though so he knew his niche would be to do the things other players couldnt or wouldnt do gaining possessions through offensive boards and helping transition points by grabbing defensive rebounds and making fast accurate outlet passes. Do yourself a great service and watch Rodman again you will see the hustle, the pick and roll, the face up the swing pass that Draymond thinks he made is actually what Rodman was doing all those years ago...ASK STEVE KERR HE WAS THERE WITH THE BULLS!!! @@grahamstrouse1165 Sure, but he also played in an NBA where players earned their spot for their roles. People take for granted that in the late 80s into the early 90s the NBA was a coaches game. They called the game almost down to the play by play like football. It wasn't as if even the stars of the league could just do what they want like today's game. I mean in every Era of Rodman's career he played in very strict offensive systems alongside incredibly high volume scorers, guys like Aguire, Dantley, Isiah, David Robinson, and then of course Jordan and Pippen. I think in today's NBA there would be pressure on Rodman to be more than he was, simply because I think we are witnessing the most rigid NBA the league has seen in a while. I mean if you dont shoot 3s they basically boo you out the league and contracts are generated by hype alone. However, I think in his own time Rodman played the field right, I mean there was a time in San Antonio where is career looked fried but he stuck to his brand of basketball, rebranded himself, and got 3 more rings out of it. But i'll just end on this just based on conditioning and athleticism alone, theres no doubt he had offensive potential way beyond a Draymond.
@JonathanKeys-f3m9 ай бұрын
He was a workout monster. Kevin Garnett is not the first guy to talk about him doing really intense workouts after playing 40 minutes in games .You have to remember in Detroit he scored a little more, but in his later career the teams he was on it wasn't as necessary for him to be such an active part of the offense. He was more a pure defensive anchor and rebounder because that's what the teams he played for asked him to do. I think that he started to check out more mentally in the last chapter of his career as well. But I think he would have adjusted the way he played if you were in this era. Fitness is such an important weapon in in basketball and he was one of the most fit players in terms of endurance stamina and pound-for-pound strength. I feel like because of Michael jordan, not to take anything away from Jordan, but we over rate players who score more points. But everywhere Rodman win championships followed, and he was an important part of every single one of those championships. Two in detroit, 3 in Chicago. He was like a modern day Bill Russell. Intensity, tenacity , how hard a guy will fight you for it are are super important for winning on the court. That's why I'm in Jordan got along , because they were both tenacious, they were both intense, they were both Fighters . And also , intensity tenacity fighting for it don't show up on the stat sheet, until you're counting rings. Remember that when you talk about Bill Russell too

The guy was gifted. It looks like people are attacking his offensive skills as the reason he couldn't play today. (1) there are plenty of starters and full timers today that don't score a lot. (2) He never tried to score. He passed out of shots all the time, even on offensive rebounds where he was 2 feet from the basket. He was keeping his meal-ticket happy. if he even upped his offense a little, and always went for the put back, he could average a respectable 12-15 easily. (3) the game today is 3 pointers and 4 footers. he would live in the 4 foot range and fit into today's game easily on offense. As a teammate, he was a scorers dream, always gave you the ball and checked the best offensive player on the other team so you didn't get wore out on D. While wearing them out.

I also think he would have been able to learn to shoot - I don't think he had any of the mental blocks that would get in the way of him improving that side of his game like a Shaq or Ben Simmons it's just that when you play alongside Michael Jordan that is not what you are being called upon to get better at - Draymond was actually a really good shooter early in his career - and he picked his 3 % back up this season but when KD joined the Dubs there was no reason for him to be shooting

Rodman could play Daniel Gafford's role on the Mavs without having to adapt his offensive skill set. If Robert Williams made a living feasting at the dunker's spot, Rodman could too. Because Rodman was used to being a role player on offense, he was comfortable in any kind of system. Rodman's passing was also underrated. His best 3Pt FG% was about 32%. That could be improved with the right coaching. I prefer the Pistons version of Dennis, because he had to bulk up later when he moved up to 4 spot and had to guard bulkier players.

@@Lo-236 unfortunately you can't just be good in specific areas anymore. Look at Tony Allen, dude was a menace on multiple teams, did some GREAT things... Then Steve Kerr exploited his glaring weakness and he became unplayable in playoffs for MEM. You can't be that bad offensively and still play today if you under 7'0. Need insane height to be bad at offense (Gobert) Even Ben Simmons is an example. Dude was elite defensively guarding multiple positions vs ATL, but his mental decline in his offense completely overshadowed what he did well. Draymond is same, at times when Dray shot is in a slump, he's a negative out there despite his defense/playmaking because defense would just leave him. When Rodman played that was illegal defense lol, you literally weren't allowed to leave Rodman defensively, unless you were doubling on ball... So great coaches like Daly and Phil could position Rodman in ways to make his defender essentially get stuck to him. Had rules been like they are now, Rodman would've been unplayable in some series. Just never guard him and leave a big in drop coverage to deny lobs/cuts... Would've given MJ/IT way less space to operate with ball.
