Top 25? Penny had the talent to easily be top 10 all time, possibly the greatest PG ever. He was much faster, just as strong and far more athletic than Magic and could score, rebound and defend better than him too and was right there with passing and basketball IQ. Even Jordan said Penny was the next great to get passed the torch from MJ just like MJ got it passed from Bird/Magic. Everyone watching through the 90's knew Penny was the next in line for the throne when MJ hung them up and the NBA/Nike was behind him too, dude was going to be the face of both companies. Penny just didn't have the longevity due to injuries, easily HOF and top 5-10 if healthy though.

Grow up in Chicago spent my summer in Memphis,all I knew was MJ and went in a gym at Memphis St. At that time and seen this dude who was 6"7 and had handle like Tim Hardaway (Mr.KillerCrossOver)passes like Magic,Jumper like Reggie Miller, defense like Joe Dumar and that Killer game take over like Jordan,I went to the nike store looking for his Jersey and they didn't sell it I made it my business to go back to the campus and get that Jersey and went back to the city I hoop in that Jersey cats(ppl) was checking saying I went down south and became a country boy..Lol but to this day everyone on the court call me Lil penny because he (Penny) took my game to another level trying to play just like him I never worn another MJ Jersey from that day on and the whole city was MJ everything... And when the Magic beat the Bulls in the playoff when MJ returned,The whole neighborhood had TALL respect for "Penny" in the Chi...

I'm a Memphian myself. I can remember during my junior year in high school Penny played along side Elliot Perry. Elliot Perry, being a highly recruited senior, was the big draw whenever Treadwell stepped into a gymnasium. Every major college in the country wanted Elliot Perry. But little to everyone's surprise was this skinny freshman playing next to Perry was Penny. Penny was so dominant as a freshman on that squad til where the talk became 'who is that freshman with Treadwell?' Dude was making the game look so easy til where he became the big draw in the city and he was only a freshman. So there's some of us who grew up in that era from the city of Memphis that knew he was special way back then. I, too, was disappointed when injuries derailed his career because he would have retired one of the best to do it.

@Joel Johnson The whole team was feeling down after getting swept by Houston. Shaq wanted to leave Orlando by the 96 ASG. I blame the front office for making really dumb decisions particularly John Gabriel. Heading into the 95-96 season they didn't have a lot of momentum because they got swept. Brian Hill should have been fired after Orlando lost to the Rockets. Orlando really needed a coach to discipline the team and make everyone play better. Someone like a Don Nelson or a Hubie Brown. Imagine Hubie Brown coaching Penny and Shaq.

I think Penny will eventually have an argument to get into the Hall of Fame. During his peak, he was incredible good and arguably a top 5 player in the NBA. He then did great work at the AAU and high school level in Memphis. If he continues to do well in college, win a few NCAA championships and establishes a legacy, I think his body of work in basketball gets him to the Hall of Fame.

The battles Penny and Kobe would of had would of made the NBA during that Era unreal, they were both Jordan's picks to take the throne when he retired, just like he got it from Bird/Magic when they were retiring. When Penny got hurt and didn't recover right the torch was then passed to Kobe instead but people forget or just weren't around to know that Penny was that dude and going to be the next face of the NBA AND Nike. Most of the modern day greats have Penny as one of their favorite all time players and who they tried to emulate etc and most modern day fans never even heard of him. Sad to see a player so talented and humble go out like that and just disappear, especially Penny who never came close to his Prime/peak of his powers and even with what little we did actually see he was already looking like a sure top 5 to 10 All Time player talent wise and had the NBA, Nike, Sprite, Hollywood etc all backing him....and again he never even got close to his peak, potential wise and was literally the next to have the throne after Jordan retired. Smh. Biiiiig facts people forget or were too young to know about Penny man. Most insane part was he was still a rising star and was already next up to be the face of the NBA. Definitely would be in the GOAT convo if he stayed healthy, he was only like 25 or 26 when that injury happened, he wasn't even in his prime yet and was absolutely dominating other PGs, no one could guard him. Never thought about it that way because they played different positions but Penny & the Mamba would of been a good matchup because Kobe would of switched up cus he wanted to defend and compete against the very best while Lebron barely plays defense to stat pad because he can't win even on Superteams with the most help in NBA History and the Refs on his payroll. @Joel Johnson You obviously never watched basketball during the 90's, Penny hadn't even come CLOSE to hitting his prime/potential/ceiling so yes he COULD of been better than Lebron ( Penny certainly never had anywhere near as much help as him ad actually played defense ) and Jordan already had Penny as the one he was passing the torch to. Penny was the next face of the NBA AND Nike and had top 5ish written all over him BEFORE ever coming close to reaching his peak. He likely would of been the best PG of all time and with a few rings he's easily in the GOAT convo. He certainly wouldn't of lost 6 out of 9 times with DWade AND Bosh or Kyrie AND Love. Who gives credit to someone for losing anyway? Never comment on sports again.
