Shaq's beef with Stan Van Gundy exploded when his former coach accused him of flopping

Pat Riley was the GM who brought Shaquille O'Neal to Miami, and the coach who led Shaq's Heat to a title, but ... not immediately. For a moment there, young Stan Van Gundy was Shaq's coach. It didn't end well, and a few years after their divorce, a seemingly minor on-court collision brought some behind-the-scenes beef into the public eye. Let's talk about Shaq and the "master of panic."

What? Riley actually coached through the Heat’s worst season. Riley just isn’t good at developing players. He always had veteran teams and couldn’t deal with the shift in type of personnel that came with D Wade. That was the youngest team the Heat ever had. No coincidence that when Van Gundy quit, there were nothing but vets on that team besides d Wade and haslem since they traded away their young core that year.

@@voiceofreason2674 You can over-coach. That's the problem. The answer is to always keep it simple as much as possible and only then make adjusments. Making huge adjusments even before the oposite team makes a true attack on you is not a smart move. You are going away from what you are really good at. More often then not,if you are really really good at one thing, even if they see it coming they can't stop it. Think about adjusments,be good at them, practice them, talk about them, when time comes that adujsment has to be second nature to you,but never rush with it. Some coaches over think the entire thing. Sometimes simple works.

Van Gundy, Barkley, so many others have talked about how sensitive Shaq is and it's so true, he might be the most thin-skinned NBA superstar ever. For a guy so dominant who accomplished so much you would think by how thin-skinned he is that he never won anything and was nothing more than a bench player, it's weird how sensitive he is. Also, Van Gundy has a lot of respect from former players but a few have mentioned how when it did come to playoffs and clutch time that Van Gundy often did overthink things and choked, though they don't use the word choke but they imply it.

That Game 7 was a heartbreak…and I couldn’t help but think the same was going to happen to my Heat in this latest playoff series against the Celtics…foreshadowing you can call it. But SVG deserves way more credit for those Heat teams from the mid 2000s than he gets credit for, he laid the groundwork for that 06 ring and we probably could have gotten another ring if not for the drama that Shaq brings….speaking of….you should have mentioned how 2 years later Riley will trade Shaq to the Suns due to Shaq physically pushing him.

And his in game coaching also seemed good until would devolve into him trying to debate with his own players about grand strategy. It was exhausting. He also can dribble the ball very well, lookup Stanny Handles. He probably has better handles than Lonzo ball, that was the best part of hearing him scream “do a move do a move do something” or just screaming “no no do not shoot off a dribble” at Lonzo. Tim duncan vs shaq in the finals after all the battles since 98 would have been the pinnacle of the era imo. In 05 Miami lose game 7 and Detroit vs spurs is the finals (the biggest defensive juggernauts of the time with Duncan at 70% cause he injure against the SuperSonics in game 6 iirc) The next year 06 spurs lose in game 7 vs Dallas in the wcf (manu dumb foul on dirk after Timmy close the deal with a masterclass still haunt me) and the finals is Miami vs Dallas. Would have been an amazing matchup, manu and wade euro stepping, timmy and shaq dominating, tony and wade going flash.

I don't know what was the problem with Stan Van gundy in Miami they were 59-23 in 2005 that had the 2nf best record in the NBA and they lost to the defending NBA champions in 7 games in the Eastern conference finals in Stan Van gundy got fired because of that. I do believe that you stan Van gundy was the scapegoat because Pat Riley wanted to come back and get another championship ring on his resume as a coach.

throught shaq's whole career he was a hyper sensitive and immature guy that thought he was the center of the universe and couldn't hear a no. and besides all that he managed to be one of best players of all time. imagine if he had the maturity and seriousness of a player like Kareem or Hakeem (before any hate, shaq is one my favorite players ever)

Interesting observation I just thought of was the occurrence of coaches leaving on the edge of championship success, ofc hard to tell if it would have panned out the same. Del Harris and Lakers (replaced by PJax in 99 and won from 00-02), SVG and Heat (replaced by Riley in Dec 05 and won in 06), Mark Jackson and GSW (replaced by Kerr in 14 and won in 15/17/18).

The Dubs needed Kerr to get them over the hump. He swapped David Lee out for Draymond, emphasized ball movement and unlocked both the offense and defense. And the Lakers needed Phil, if for nothing else than to unlock the talents of two gigantic egos in Shaq and Kobe and make them work together, he was absolutely the man for the job.
