Hakeem genuinely has an argument for the second greatest center of all time. I think centers are rated by a combo of offense, defense, and winning, and Hakeem was a greater defender than Shaq, a greater offensive player than Bill, and a greater winner than Wilt. You got to admit that center is stacked with all-time greats. Hard to call Hakeem the greatest when the position also has the guy with the most rings, the guy with the most points, and the guy with the best overall average stats by a crazy huge margin. Watching him play was a joy and his skill is rightfully held in very high esteem, but it's hard to point to any one thing with Hakeem that puts him ahead of Russell, Kareem and Chamberlain all at the same time. The one thing that Hakeem should always be recognized for is winning his championships with the least backup. That's definitely one thing he doesn't get enough credit for, for sure.

As someone who watched DREAM and SHAQ win their titles, I have to agree-Olajuwon won two titles with far less help than Shaq. You didn't mention that the first Rockets title team was filled with good shooters AND the perfect power forward to complement Hakeem, Otis Thorpe. He was a gritty, double-double guy who had been an All Star a few seasons prior. He was like a cross between Charles Oakley and Horace Grant. Shaq was utterly dominant as well, especially against the Pacers in the first championship run where he looked like a man playing against middle schoolers. Besides Kobe, the Lakers also had Glen Rice that year, who could still light teams up from the perimeter. I go with Olajuwon for his defense and his insane agility. But you can't go wrong either way here...like comparing Bird and Magic, there's no wrong answer.

The best centers of the time during Shaq's dominance were Ben Wallace, maybe Yao? There was really nothing at the superstar level aside from Shaq. When Olajuwon played there were Ewing, Kareem, Shaq, Parish, Robinson, Mutombo, Mourning, Smits, etc. Teams were led by their centers and there was a bunch of talent in the paint. Obviously Shaq is incredible but Olajuwon dominated pretty much all the great centers of his era while Shaq dominated mostly guys who weren't even near his level.

Shaq's greater in the sense that he has a more memorable legacy and more rings and FMVPs. However Hakeem was no doubt better than Shaq--1v1, doing more with less, and being the most dominant big man during the best big man era. It can always be said that Hakeem took a 6th seed to the championship while Shaq only made the Finals with a star teammate (Penny, Kobe, then Wade).

Good analysis. The only shame in this whole thing was that David Robinson didn’t play better in the 1995 WCF because he was sooo capable of doing so. Hakeem and DRob played against each other like 40 times or so and the numbers are even but with DRob posting better efficiencies and winning the vast majority Of the matchups. I’m not sure what happened in that one and only playoff series they had. My guess is that if that series was played 10 times, the usual results would emerge. That series was low key like Lebron vs Dallas in 2011. Inexplicable but so important to the history of the NBA.

People don't know but Hakeem was just as good as Jordan, but had crappy teams. In his second year he led his team to the NBA finals. He did that with one all-star, an injured starting pg, and only 6 years after touching a basketball. Also you didn't mention his steals, his quadruple dbls, or his insane amount of 100/200 seasons, or how he would be in the top 10 in 5 of the main statistical category every year. Points, rebounds, shooting %, blocks, and steals.

Hakeem is my #1 center of all time. The most skilled and best defensive center of his era (which had the most competition at his position) and those before him while standing at a legit 6'10. If he scored 3 more points per game in 93-94 he'd have won the MVP, DPOY, the scoring title, and Finals MVP and it would have been the greatest single-season performance by any player ever with 0 arguments. I personally still regard it as the best. Comparing him to players from the '60s or even '70s is laughable to me considering fewer teams to compete with and the lack of parity in the league. A few players were dominating others who were 6 to 14 inches smaller than them most every night. I have great respect for the players of old who paved the way for every other athlete to follow them but just like with baseball, the game just wasn't as impressive.

Hakeem is better, Shaq is greater. People ALWAYS confuse the two. There's a reason Russell is ranked higher than the much more skilled Wilt by just about everyone, and why the good-not-great at scoring Magic Johnson is still thought of as the GOAT point guard by many despite what Steph can do, or why Duncan is considered the GOAT power forward over the more skilled and versatile Barkley and KG, and so on. Shaq doesn't have the skill and the defense of Hakeem. True. But in his prime he was just so ridiculously dominant it was like watching a cartoon. He's the greater player.

I totally agree with you! Even though Shaq won 4 and Hakeem 'just' 2 those rings have different value. As you stated Hakeem had way less support during his prime and way more competition. Shaq got very big amount of help from Kobe and Wade during his championships. When you were talking about help and support I started to imagine a what if scenario. Shaq had a young Kobe and a young Wade during his career. What if Hakeem actually had a young/prime Drexler during his career for lets say, 5-6 seasons? Would Hakeem have more rings than those 2 he did actually win? I say a prime tandem of Olajuwon and Drexler would have won atleast 3 rings together as they both made the finals without each other.
