Bayan Claremont visiting faculty member Dr. Jonathan AC Brown, is currently the Associate Professor of Islamic Studies and Muslim Christian Understanding at Georgetown University. He received his BA in History from Georgetown University in 2000 and his PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago in 2006. Dr. Brown has studied and conducted research in Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Indonesia, India and Iran. His book publications include The Canonization of al-Bukhari and Muslim: The Formation and Function of the Sunni Hadith Canon (Brill, 2007), Hadith: Muhammad's Legacy in the Medieval and Modern World (Oneworld, 2009), Muhammad: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2011) and Misquoting Muhammad: The Challenges and Choices of Interpreting the Prophet's Legacy (Oneworld, 2014). He has published numerous articles. He is the editor in chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islamic Law.

Mr. Brown raises some good points. I can't speak to Sharia law nor it's history. I can't speak the accuracy of many of those things. Nevertheless, the accuracy of all his claims should be questioned. He makes the patently false claim that a million Iraqi children died due to sanctions. No one ever claimed it was a million and the scientist who originally did has clearly said her original work was wrong. Think about it further, Iraq had a population of 17 1/2 million in 1990. For a million children to die, even over the course of a decade,, an entire generation of children would have been wiped out. How would nearly every child alive be killed by United Nations sanctions that ALLOWED for food and medicine to be exported, sold and donated to Iraq? If Dr. Brown is willing to embrace such specious claims about the UN sanctions, one has to question the validity of his other claims. If they are true indeed accurate, he should drop the lies about the children's deaths.

From his entire lecture you pick up and that one mistake. If the figure is not a million it's certainly close to that amount and we should not focus on these technicalities and relegate the fact that one of the worst travesties in recent history was committed on the Iraqis. He might of made a few mistakes and as he said these are his own but his underlying message is relevant to the topic. There's this thing Dr Brown does: He constantly compares the *normative ideal* version of Islam to the *worse reality* of non-Muslim (i.e. Western) countries. For instance, he contrasts the most idealistic interpretation of Muslim law to the imperfect reality of Western countries, all the while eliding both the normative ideal of Western law as well as the reality of VAW in Muslim countries. It's really annoying, not to mention intellectually dishonest.

The whole approach that violence is a larger phenomena than an Islamic one, does not address the issue, but hides it. It is like saying: yes we have an problem and so do you, but as people of faith how are to deal with violence? The notion that the French law system can be blamed fails to explain why the phenomena of violence happens in the first place. Yes there is violence in Latinamerica, but is not perpretated in the name of God nor is the example of any prophet every used to support abuse.

Exactly that was my train of thought, he talks about how people criticizing Islam are applying misdirection to detract from their issues which ironically he does several times. The main problem with Islam is you have an ideology codified by a supreme supernatural authority, an ideology which openly devalues the worth of women, condemns homosexuality and promotes capital punishment for a whole host of crimes. No the problem as he is clearly stating is that people assume only Muslims are violent against women are Islamic countries are. He's bringing into the light failed conceptions that in fact the media and people propagate violent Muslims but they fail to see the state of their own country or their own society. He's also as I'm repeating mentioning that non Muslim countries have more violence against women but the actuality is defeaning. THE PROBLEM, is that people especially the media when a crime happens from a Muslim it is thrown into a cycle of repetition and over exaggeration compared if it happens to others. For example when a child bride case happens in Yemen it is deemed as an international case that must be stopped. But it so often happens more in India than it does in Yemen. Why does Yemen only get the attention. By solving a problem we need actually acknowledge it first.

I commonly see Muslims (who have never been to Iraq) point out the civilian deaths in Iraq and lie that "Americans killed 170k civilians in Iraq." Well, let's take a peek at the facts. According to IBC: Total deaths from coalition forces: 15,141 (13%) of all documented civilian deaths were reported as being directly caused by the US-led coalition. So 87% died at the hands of fellow Muslims. 15,000 is not that bad for an 8 year war, compared to say the civilian casualties of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (millions). It is not very credible for a muslim to research his own religion. An atheist is in a much better position to carry out this kind of research. Any person regardless of they are from the same camp can be credible as long as they bring evidence backed by not just that person's say so but alignment with the Orthodox, which Dr. Brown has done in his books and classes. One of the known laws in the shariah is no one is allowed to take the law into his/her own hands, especially when it comes to penal/hudud law. Layered on top of that is honor killing not coming from the shariah.
