kick and bass are so tight even simple parts like that are so hard to make it feel like that. A true master.

Donald Lawrence doc! I see you reading that music doc! I never understood why musicians would do that in a church setting until I got older. I realized it helps keeps their ability to read. Not only that, you read and improvising which is very skilled, you are reading and l adding things to what is not their. It’s a right and left brain overload. Kudos brother!

I agree with a different take. The reading could be because he's not as familiar with that song. I don't think he was reading to stay sharp. He was reading to make sure he was on point. As for improvising, I've learned that MOST musicians do the same thing in the same format. The first time through is very standard and basic. It's the actual notes and structure on paper. While they're going through the first time, they're thinking about creative ways to tastefully get to the key change without overplaying. The second time through is when you hear them stray from the written notes and add their own personality. The thing I love about this part is different musicians will come to different conclusions on how to get to the next key. Even though there's no wrong way to do it, some musicians definitely stand out and are far more masterful and creative than others. Sometimes you'll even see musicians who play the same instrument be in aww because they would have never thought to do that. I also find it interesting that the same musician could play the same song the next night and play it differently. It's all about the feeling in the moment. Have you seen Sharay's Joy to the World? A bass player transcribed Sharay's version and played the same notes but it lacked feeling and passion. He could imitate the notes but not the deep emotion behind the notes. That made all the difference. This was my very long way of agreeing with you that Sharay IS THE MAN!! By the way, check out "There Is No Way (Musician Solos)" and watch the stank face of the musicians when they watch the others play. They appeared to be amazed at the audacity of some of the musician's choices to get from one key to the other and make it work.

@@sheldonwqmg this is one of the most respectful disagreements. Thank you for enlightening me along th way. Yes, I did get a chance to hear both of the joy to the world renditions and even reacted to one of them.
