You know, I gave them to a dealer at the show for a song. I'm sure he got the better end of the deal by a lot, but I'm also sure he will get them in the hands of someone who will love them, so I'm happy with that.

Wow, I would truly enjoy going through bags like this. These stamps need to be rescued and can fill many holes in my albums as well as many other collectors. I wish there more stamp collectors these days. I sure enjoy your channel. I learn more with each of your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for saving the early/old stamps out of the trash. The Klein Brothers item is a good advertising item. Advertising/artistic covers are very collectible. The very early post card from the 1870"s is worth keeping. It may not be that valuable, but it is very early. Also, early stamps have a variety of interesting cancels. You can start collections showing fancy cork cancellations, New York foreign cancels, etcetra. David

I started collecting as a kid and bought approvals from ABC Stamp Company in books just like the Bysum book. I took all I could get at 2 cents a piece. Some were 7 cents and 12 cents but they were beyond my price range. That book brought back fond memories when I had my Ambassador album and did not really know anything about stamps other than I liked them. I love the French star cancellation.

I bought a 8 box lot estate sale late last year.there was one medium box of classic era stamps of old dirty type stamps mostly all on paper dumped in..classic meaning turn of the 20th century and some before as yours are. Glad you can at least rescue some of yours as well.

I think you can save most of these stamps. I did it once, used boiling hot water and after a 5 sec bath in H2O2. I know this last is somewhat controversial, but i feel it helps disinfecting them. After another soaking in room temperature water, press and done.

I haven't tried the peroxide, but I might sometime. It scares me a little for bleaching out the stamps. What dilution do you use?

@@KensStampCollection i have a 2% solution form the pharmacy. Never had problem with beaching, i think is just too week. It does help with oxidation though. But i mostly use it on stamps in rough shape, i really try to keep mold away. Could be an overreaction though.

Soaking stamps can be a pain for sure. Sometimes adding a drop of soap can ease them off a little easier.

Hello Ken! I enjoyed to see the Botswana stamps in particular - love any stamps coming from southern Africa. :) Wow, it is almost unbelievable that such a large amount of stamps were just trashed! You were very brave to work through them and salvage some. Are you sometimes using just water to clean stamps, or is it necessary to add some soap? Is there not a change that the soap might chemically damage the stamps? Will soap also help to clean "foxing" (the brown discolouration of stamps, which I gather is probably mold?) (Real beginner questions. :) ). You are a good speaker and is excellent with or without script. I enjoyed this episode. I think both ways are working well and you should proceed what rings most true to you. Thanks for the video. :) :)

They were in really bad shape, so I can't disagree they were ready for the trash. Oh, well, I saved some. I add a drop or two of Dawn soap. Not sure if that's a New Zealand brand. It's gentle and effective. You could do without the soap. Either way, I rinse them with clean water a number of times when the water gets brown. I've never had a problem, but I'm no archivist. Some people suggest hydrogen peroxide. That is very likely to bleach stamps, so if you try that, test stamps first and don't let them really soak. I use plain water for otherwise-clean stamps. As you say, some stamps will bleed when you soak them. I've ruined a few this way, unfortunately. The ones that do that for sure are some of the darker red US postage due stamps and some of the brighter Great Britain Victoria and Edward VII stamps. Unfortunately, I've never been able to clean away foxing. Anything that removes the brown spot seems like it will also damage the stamp. Perhaps someone more experienced can share an effective way with us both.

Great video. Started collecting early 90s Have many albums my best collection I acquired from a gentleman who worhed at Pratt n Whitney many shoe boxes of First flights envelopes air races Etc n Etc. Hundreds of envelopes space flight covers aircraft covers. And have a ok collection of Revenue Stamps.

Usually I don’t clean them, but some of these were funky-either clean them or trash them. So I toss them in warm water with a drop of dish soap. I agitate and rinse well before drying. Most aren’t as fragile as you would think, although some won’t survive a wash, so test inexpensive ones first.
