Choco Bun Bruv, it isn’t anything but paper, don’t allow that to limit you or keep you away from practising. Nothing in life is _that precious_ that you should compromise your development as an artist over - especially a book. If you bought one, you can save up for another. Love your more casual videos, they make me feel like I have a friend over and discussing art supplies, haha. On the topic of your ugly sketchbook, I find it bizarre that so many people have one set aside specifically for 'ugly' sketches and experimentation - like, isn't that the whole point of a sketchbook in the first place, to experiment and let loose?? I dunno, I feel like the internet art scene is a double edged sword, on one hand everybody is better connected with one another, but on the other silly worries like sketchbooks not being beautifully illustrated and amazing each and every page seems to be counterproductive (I imagine this stems from fully rendered illustrations being touted as 'sketches') But I know exactly what you mean about sketches being more expressive, it ties in with what I had said before. The point of a sketch is to experiment, let loose, and to warm up your art muscles, when you're not worried about the illustrative qualities of the artwork it makes room for pure passion and liveliness, through looser marks and haphazard lines. I dunno, I'm sorry if it feels that I am berating you, I don't mean for it to come off that way, but the idea that a sketchbook must be of publishable quality really irks me because it ultimately stifles creativity - ALL sketchbooks should have the freedom of an 'ugly' sketchbook, that's why it's a sketchbook :/
@misia.illustrator48404 жыл бұрын
cheesesmiles exactly!! Im glad you get it, it also seems extremely disingenuous to call something a sketchbook if it all it’s filled with is fully rendered pieces
@LeiliMana3 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying but the thing with sketchbooks is that they're not just for loose sketches anymore but rather most artists use them for finished drawings and spreadsheets. The term sketchbook stayed but the purpose changed. If you look up what a Moleskine sketchbook costs you won't just fill it with drawings that are scribbles and whatnot. Hence why you'd also buy a cheap sketchbook that you feel more comfortable messing with. "Back in the day" (and of course a lot of artists still do so:) sketchbooks were filled with small ideas that were transferred onto "real", "better" paper or canvas, it was a book of ideas and brainstorming. I totally get you but sketchbooks have changed a bit in its purpose. But I agree, we need to stop forcing ourselves to create perfect drawings on every page.

I went through the same realisation recently. I was decluttering my apartment when I noticed how little I had used most of my art supplies. So I gave most of my copics and some marker paper to a teen in need, and got rid of a lot of fabric/ribbons/etc that I knew I’d never actually use. It was a great feeling. And I also stopped buying sketchbooks until my current one is finished, too. I love the idea of an ugly sketchbook! Totally going to do this.

@AwakeningCamiria4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm using the same (they come in three cover colours, but inside I believe they're all the same: red, white, black), it is way cheaper and the quality is very good (140 g/m2), tried it with a Pentel brush pen (slight bleeding out of contour) and light washes of watercolour wit no bleeding sideways or even on the other side of the page, which is amazing! ^_^ The page is yellow-ish, more than the Moleskine, but it doesn't bother me, I quite like it. :)

I'm finally about to start a new sketchbook - it's a midori one that you recommended years ago in one of your videos and I got almost a year ago when I was in London Graphic Centre (one of my fondest memories. the guy there helped me find the sketchbook, opened it for me to touch the paper and when I said it feels nice he got really excited and said "it smells nice too!") I wanna thank you for telling me about the sketchbook and about the place, thank you really! If you're worried about the bleeding of copics in moleskine get some cheap acrylic paint! An opaque white and some nice pastel colour if you want to, you can easily draw on top with pencils and still erase it. Paint the page first before you colour on the other side with the markers, its way harder to cover the bleed through on the other side if you don't.
