How To Aim Using Side Spin

In this pool lesson I am going to show you how spin changes the path of the cueball and the object ball and how to adjust your aim when using spin. In order to understand how the cueball and the object ball react, and how you have to adjust your aim, you have to know about deflection, cut induced throw, spin induced throw and the ghost ball principle.

This is a very complex topic. I tried my best to be scientific and at the same time make it as easy as possible to understand. But there are so many factors and so many variables like speed, follow through, cutting angle, amount of spin and even elevation of the cue (which I cut out in this lesson, otherwise we would have also had swerve as an factor). So your task after this lesson is to put the information from this video together and to experiment how much the cueball and object ball path change with all the different factors. All of this maybe sounds very confusing to beginners, but believe me - it isn't. Most adjustments work automatically if you repeat it over and over again. But it's nice to know what's behind it. The best way to learn spinning the cue ball is along the long rail. First against the rail with max left or right depending on which side you start at. If on left then max left if right then max right . then at the #1diamond spot then centre diamond spot then 3rd diamond spot. Learning in both directions right to left or left to right. It teaches you something you will never learn aiming at object balls. Not trolling your video, spinning cue balls is not the same for everyone. Depends if you are right or left handed more than anything. It makes all the difference in the world.

Briggz There is another factor not mentioned in this video. This factor is curve. When you hit a ball with side, the ball will deflect like the video mentions but when the ball quits sliding and the spin of the ball starts getting traction on the table, the spin will cause the ball to curve. So left spin will cause the ball to deflect right, until the ball gets traction at which point the ball will start to curve left. If you were to draw a line through the centers of the cue ball and odjectball on a straight in shot, some soft shots with extreme side can actually deflect opposite of the side you hit then curve back across the center line making the “aim point” be on the opposite side of the “contact point” than deflection alone would indicate. In other words, if I am using left side spin then I would normally aim left of the contact point to compensate for deflection to the right. But a soft shot will deflect the cue ball right of the centerline but because the shot was hot soft it won’t take long for the cue ball to quit sliding so deflection won’t have taken the cue ball too far away from the centerline. When the ball quits sliding the spin will get traction and cause curve and the spin will curve the ball back towards the center line and possibly across the centerline before reaching the object ball. It might sound complicating but it’s easy to grasp once someone understands this. The point is that a harder shot will keep the cue ball sliding and eliminates the need to calculate for curve.

Hi Sharivari, Gasp ! to think of all the termanology and physics that you discussed in this lesson and then go to the table and apply them is daunting .Horseshoes are looking better all the time .." Hold the phone" not so quick pool players. Remember this is a game ! The GAME of pool. Anyone else been completely beweldered and overwhelmed with goofy rules and quirky exceptions when being shown a new card game or how to correct your steering properly when comming out of a slide? You have to just get dealt in or be on an open surface and experience a slide.. Ive found that a great way for me to actualize and incorperate more involved lessons is to bring them with me to the table. Hold the phone! I have the lesson on my phone i go to the table and go step by step in sync applying what is being described in the lesson with me hitting shots on the table !! The bottom line is if you want to get better you need to make the effort. This really works !. I hope it works for another player too.

One thing I should mention is a beginner and intermediate player will have a much more difficult time mastering this for many reasons but the main reason is because those players have not mastered how to line up their bodies with each shot and this adds to how difficult this can be.

I noticed when I was first starting out I started messing around with English and after a very short time you instinctively know where to adjust. You can see it immediately. You can almost feel where it has to go. The biggest mistake I made was just learning to not be so drastic with right and left. Almost no one gives it more that a half tip or full tip. Great video, as always!

I agree. I use mostly a half tip to a tip for most of my positional shots unless I have to go 2-3 rails to the other end of the table. Then full left or full right comes in very handy. Also, my preference is to only use full spin when I'm not far away from the object ball and the object ball is not far away from the pocket.

This is why pool is such a great game! There is so much that goes into being a really good player. The average person that just knocks balls around doesn't have a clue about this stuff. And the person that has never played pool has even less of a clue - if that is possible. The ONLY way to learn to learn to use english properly is to practice and practice and practice some more. But practice the right fundamentals. Also, this is another reason why you should have your own cue. Some cues have very little deflection, while others have a lot more. If you are using a low deflection cue and then you start using a cue with a lot more deflection - you are probably going to REALLY struggle at first.

This was very good video! In theory is seems so complex. I have been playing in leagues for 15 years and i can say I have always been using this just "as feeling". What he says at the end were your body and mind will do all this for you is very true. I can "feel" it, when I need to start compensating only with the experience of playing. These vids are so good. always well done, thoroughly explained, nice grraphics, great live examples...I'm gonna throw out one small suggestion, not a criticism in any way at all, just a suggestion that might be helpful, especially for beginning players....in you computer graphics you show a shot describing the effects of english, throw etc...I noticed that the ones that show it from behind the cue ball are best...a couple of them are shown from in front of the object ball and requires the viewer to reverse them in his mind in order to understand it from the 'behind the cue ball' perspective...it might be better to show everything from the 'behind the cue ball' perspective, since as a player that's going to be your perspective. It helps me understand why pool can be difficult, even for the experienced players...My first teacher was from the Philippines, and taught me a lot about sidespin, in connection with follow, or draw...TBH even after years of time, I didn't improve much. I currently have a billiard instructor {Charlene Krystle Suarez) who took me all the way back to the fundamentals, with no sidespin. She advertised that after studying with her, APA players are able to improve one skill level on average. Sadly, I want to run before I can walk, and fall down a lot. She is one of the highest ranked women in the USA on Fargo (which she wants to stay down so she can be eligible to enter the local tournaments that have Fargo limit caps). I am shooting in 2 different tournaments today. The highest I have recently achieved was 4th place😔😄😔😄😔 of which I have mixed emotions about. Maybe you will be explaining how emotions and attitude can affect your game, even when attempting to remain stoically technical. I love how you make the complex sound not so complex. Excellent vid, I would just add to all this the type of tip, felt, and size of pocket, as the size could just dictate that you could play with the aim angle and ignore to a degree the SIT/CiT, which would make it a lot easier for beginners when they are trying to just make a shot and not worry about positional play, all in all love your vids man keep it up, cause I know I learned from them, so thanks. I didn't even know about BHE and FHE when I learned adjusting for spin, it just came natural. If you want to make a concious decision on how you want to adjust for aim, there is no right or wrong. Whatever gives you the best results should be your choice. You can even combine both. I however am using pure FHE.

Thanks for saying that last part. I felt so overwhelmed I was thinking about giving up on pool altogether. I was hoping it could be something your brain would just get a feel for rather than having to consciously work through all of that. I have one question though. Would you say not to practice English until you can hit straight shots and slight cuts almost without fail? It would seem to me that if you can't even do that, there's a flaw in your stroke or your eye isn't sufficiently trained and that should be resolved first.

You're welcome. Yes I would agree. You first have to be able to hit straight, make all types of shots without english and learn to control the cueball with just low and high. After you are able to do that you can start to play with english and then use it to your advantage once your able to do it. Because it can make the game a lot easier once you've mastered it.

So if I have a 30 degree cut shot then I will have maximum CIT. To avoid complicating the shot I can just do a high ball or low ball with no English. So then I have two options in this scenario: Either I adjust my aiming point to compensate for the CIT OR I can aim normally but increase the speed of the shot to reduce the CIT. Is that correct?

The swerve is more of a practice and know your table kinda thingy, but if you are very mechanical about how much tip of english combined(low + left etc.) you apply together with having a very consistent stroke speed and control, then you can mostly hit the ballpark. One thing I know is that hitting low on the ball will counteract deflection, while hitting high mostly causes no swerve, thereby leaving you to deal with the deflection caused by the english applied.

Neverminde me. This is just my notes for myself. I might confuse you guys. Spin induce throw Right English hard hit = ball to the right Right English soft hit = ball to the left Left English hard hit = ball to the left Left English soft hit = ball to the right Meaning soft = opposite side Hard = same side. Same with cut induced throw (max 30°) Hard hit = less throw Slow hit = more throw Meaning if hitting slow the ball moves on the same side more. If you don't want to change your contact point. You can add the two factors. CIT and SPIN INDUCED THROW. Considering this is a slow hit.

At approx 1min 50 secs you say 'a harder hit means more deflection' whereas the rest of the pool world seem to say it means LESS deflection and a SLOWER SHOT means MORE deflection. Something wrong here!

The cue ball does not deflect more with slower speed. Where do you have that information from? A harder hit will mean less swerve. So the cueball will hit further away from the aiming line. A softer hit will allow more swerve, so the cueball will end closer to the aiming line. I didn't talk about swerve in this lesson, because I didn't want to make it any more complicated. But that's the reason why I said the cueball "deflects" more on harder shots.

Very confused on you stating that using inside english makes making a shot more difficult than using outside english. I agree that horizontal spin will always make shots more difficult to make than center ball (because of 1. deflection 2. spin induced throw 3. curve). But the idea that a fourth factor, CIT (cut induced throw), makes a shot easier or harder is not correct. Whether that CIT is adding or subtracting from your aim adjustment from the other three factors is irrelevant is determine the difficulty of shot. There is also a thing called 'over correction' which is just as much of a factor as 'under correction'.
