I swam out there in 4-7 feet deep water for years every day for half the year and some days for hours at a time. Only saw a few sharks and never been bitten. I feel safer in the water than in my car on the highway. Nobody dies from shark attack in this area but many drown, get struck by lightning, get shot, overdose, and killed in crashes. A good swimmer has little to fear from these sharks. They're small ones and they only accidentally bite because they are feeding on fish. Yes, I get out of the water if there are schools of fish around me.

I surf at new Smyrna beach all the time and honestly, it’s not as scary as everyone thinks it is. Within a year, I’ll probably see about 25 sharks while I’m surfing, most of them being blacktips. I’m not stupid, so every time I see a shark, I get out of the water, but they usually won’t attack you without a reason. But I definitely recommend that you stay out of the waters if you don’t have a surfboard or any floating board. But usually they don’t really care for humans, sometimes they come to check me out but they haven’t ever attacked me yet(and I hope they never do). So, in conclusion, sharks aren’t as scary and vicious as everyone makes them out to be, but they are still to be feared, and if you see one, get out of the water immediately.

NSB tends to be very crowded and depending on what part of the year you go it can be crowded or not. There is a week in October every year where Daytona Beach has Biketoberfest and it spills into NSB, Port Orange, and other areas. During that time residents and other beach goers avoid Volusia County due to the traffic plus October the temps start to go down a little reducing the amount of visitors. We just had spring break and good god the traffic was horrendous by the beach and NSB has 2 bridges where you can go from the mainland to the beaches because you have to cross one of the bridges over the Halifax River and one is a drawbridge which we avoid like the plague. Also kids are still in school in October reducing visitors as well. NSB has less than 30,000 residents and the traffic can be a nightmare for a small town. Plus the water isn’t very pretty here compared to other areas where it may be crystal blue. Here it’s that ugly dark green.

@@richardvass1462 I wouldn't call it safe, simply because its a ocean beach and you can drown you know, lol. But seriously all of the attacks seem minor and there aren't any missing limbs from what I could find. Got curious and went hunting for some stories about the beach. Plus there is the fact that it really doesn't take much to be 1 out of 25 when you consider the amount of shark attacks. 220 attacks out of 5500, and all of the attacks are minor considering what sharks can do? I'd be more concerned about drowning. I think the rate for that is something like 10 a day, and just in America?

I swam there as a kid. I had no idea of the reputation. My family and I went on holiday from UK to Florida, 1990. My parents befriended a local couple who recommended New Smyrna as a nice place visit, with an apparently non-touristy beach. He was right the beach was lovely, and place was near empty. As soon as we got there I swam out alone, just straight out for around 50-60m I guess, while the others unpacked towels and bags. I looked back and saw I was far from shore, so turned and swam straight back. I lazily crawled up the sand a big wave crashed on me and spun me around. As I struggled for breath i remember thinking the sea is giving me a slap for being so careless. I don’t know how I didn’t encounter a shark. Looking back it was a really surreal moment. I think sharks are beautiful creatures but I don’t fancy a bite. I was lucky.

I thought about that too. It doesn't have to be even a mile long stretch of water, if money is the issue. Even a three block long stretch would allow for all the beachgoers uncrowded access to the ocean. I enjoy just relaxing, bobbing up and down with the waves, that no pool can match. Any pool is still going to be more crowded than a sectioned off part of the ocean. This basic structure technology seems easily doable.

Sharks are not evil but that doesn't mean you should tempt them lol Myrtle Beach is one of the most common shark attack places in the world too but we don't act like parents are bad for taking their kids there. As long as you are responsible and aware, you risk is relatively low. Don't go too far out, don't wear flashy jewelry or bright bathing suits.

The water in NSB isn’t clear and it can be hard to see the sharks. Chances are they were close to you and you never knew it. I won’t go in the ocean here but that’s a personal preference of mine. I won’t go in water that I can’t see through

I was wading about waste deep in New Smyrna about 20 years ago when a 9-10' shark swam right in front of me. I could have reached down and touched it's fin. I backed out of the water and left the beach.

My husband’s family and now our kids have been going to New Smyrna for 40 years now. It’s more popular today than ever before which means more tourists, more construction and more people in the water. Its not a sleepy beach town anymore. Not even this National Geographic scary video keeps people away.

Isnt that a migration route and mating area for blacktips? The closer to the shore the warmer the water also well and more food opportunities.

I swam in New Smyrna thousand times and only seen a shark two or three times. Maybe because I don't care nobody I know has ever been bitten and nobody ever dies from sharks there. I'm working concerned about not drowning with the rip currents.

They would do the public of service by not fear-mongering showing sharks that don't even live in the New Smyrna area and focus instead on how not to drown in a rip current which is more likely.

Got back from NSB yesterday. All 5 days we swam in about waste deep water. Saw no sharks and had a great time. However, we took an eco tour and the guide told us the dunes park near the ponce inlet where surfers are is where the most attacks happen. Only thing we struggled with was the rip tide. We did know about the shark issue.. and it was constantly on my mind as we waded through.
