Very cool! I haven’t tried SharkByte yet, but the latency and weight advantages are definitely appealing for whoops and other micros. I hope SharkByte succeeds and I hope DJI succeeds, and I hope they push each other to keep advancing the tech for us! One side note: removing all the plugs from a Crazybee FC and direct soldering can actually save 0.7g. It is more than you might think because you also get to remove the plugs from the motor wires.

Honestly, both the DJI and the FatShark systems seem REALLY interesting for me. I would have both if I could! (Some day...) But I'm still analog only. Either way, I really think people would buy quads like those. Why not? And they can be much smaller and lighter than with the DJI system. Anyway... I really hope Shark Byte gets better and better! We will see, but maybe all it needs to get the investment is to people start buying and using it. Fantastic flying and build, Nick!!! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

My favorite video! I miss the days guys use to really dig in and experiment. To me building quads and fidget over parts and finding that right combo is 50% of the fun in this hobby. I love to tinker and this video has so much info for builders especially the weights. 1102 9kkv is just a sweet spot for minus 45g 75mm whoops with the 4 blade gemfans I found. 802/803 are so inefficient and don't provide grip over 25g. The efficiency of the 1102 9kkv and overall feeling of them in the air is just great. Still think you could make a brick fly ;) This video held my attention from beginning to end. Awesome job Nick! Thank you for all the work that went into this video.

Oh, I still need to buy a foam brick :). It was a fun process, I would like to see 1102 motors with shorter wire length, might be a long shot. I would like to see a 1002 or 902 from happymodel and see what the weight is. If we can pull 2grams off the 1102 motor weight it might be worth it. Through this process I kept wondering what the motor shaft weight differences are, I don't have two of the same motor with 1mm and 1.5mm shafts. I don't know if a frame can go lower weight and maintain its integrity, I would be surprised if we can get a durable frame less than 5grams, sure we can cut the battery tray off and that will get below 5grams, but we have to have a way to mount the battery, I suspect the tray is the lowest weight option.

Nice video! I put my SB bundle into an ET115 for flying outside, and it was rather easy to install it all in the canopy. After seeing this, I might try to install it into my HappyModel Snapper 7 for indoors. The extra weight might even slow it down a little, so I can better fly it indoors. Not super light whoops, I know, but I just fly what's fun and reliable. Keep up the great work!

Thinking about buying SharkBite and trying a light weight build. Think I would use the UZ85 model it comes with the 1102x 10,000 HM motors. It would be a little heavier with the larger 85mm frame and 2” props but would have a lot more performance. The larger size would be better for outdoor flying once it gets warm again and would still work inside. The UZ85 dry weight is 36 grams and would probably add another 12 grams for the dji board and camera.

Hi Nick Great video and build you are doing. I just love your excitement about your work. I have seen the videos on the DJI version of the whoop builds. But I never liked them, I thought about it and I still think that those weights that made them sluggish and not worth the cost. Now about SHARKBIT I haven't had the chance to try but I have heard great news about it. I wonder if we could find the pins for the connectors that way we can just cut the motor wires to the length you want, then add the pins and connector. And yes that antenna is a Happymodel. THAT THIS THIS ??? A CRASH VIDEO !!! LOL. But WoW !! 3 minutes Great job on them. Looking forward to see your next video

That "mesh" on the thicker antenna wire is the coaxial shielding. That wire is probably RG178. The black antenna wire is a little thinner and lighter, probably RG196. It is probably worth seeking out antennas that use the thinner-lighter coax since the signal attenuation is mostly insignificant at the short lengths we use on whoops, but the weight is significant.

That metal shield as you call it on the antennas is part of the antenna , These antennas are called sleeve dipoles... Dipole means two poles, So you have the vertical 1/4 wave piece and the metal sleeve around the coax is the other 1/4 wave part of the dipole... We use antennas like these on HF ( High Frequency ) the only difference being the size of the antennas , As you increase the frequency the antennas get smaller and visa versa.

What I'd like to see is a SharkByte spec race with some of the LED gates that are used for the Tiny Whoop "invitational" and the course at Jesse Perkins headquarters. The downside to "broadcasting" those races to spectators has always been the crappy analogue transmission... SharkByte might make it more of a "spectator-friendly" sport like that of the 5" DRL. And I'm sure they can lighten this stuff even more... perhaps they could call it... SharkLyte

Nick....Is 2:30 really your flight time target? That by today’s standards and 48mhz flash seems really short (unless the birds really inefficient) even with your hard flying....just curious? I would think a full minute longer at 3:30 would be more amenable to most people. ....
@NickBurnsFPV
@NickBurnsFPV 3 жыл бұрын
I find many report more than a full minute of flight time on quads I have reviewed with the same batteries, I can’t be sure of the performance/care of the battery. I don’t do the 48+kHz on quads I review on the channel, that is a step beyond a review, it’s an option but it’s also an option that can go wrong for those that aren’t experienced. On this side I get 100s of comments, questions and messages, I feel it’s important to have a level approach. I expect more experienced viewers to know, they can increase flight time with kHz, props. I don’t expect the same of less experienced. As in this video, I don’t care for the lack of motor breaking of 48khz or more, when flying like I like to I find it makes it more difficult to manage the flight.

Man, the footage looks so much better than analog but there's definitely a noticeable performance difference. It definitely looks like a heavier quad to fly, though I guess you can't know until you fly it. I'm tempted to get sharkbyte because I mainly fly smaller, toothpick/whoop quads and I feel like sharkbyte would be a good fit for that but it would also mean making a lot of new quads that will come with some compromises.....

If I remember correctly, I thought the original Mobula 7 motors were 16000 kv. This is really interesting to see the results, but I kept coming back to a similar thought. Stick with the 1102 motors and all the same components, but move up to a 85mm frame and Gemfan 2023 2" triblades. I am looking to upgrade my goggles and have trying to decide whether to go with DJI or Fatshark. I really like tiny whoops and up to now it seems that the DJI Hd system is on the heavy side for whoops. Your build using a 2s system seems like the lightest digital fpv whoop that has been made so far (at least that I know about). For me personally, going with fatshark is desirable because I can keep flying the drones I have and then get sharkbyte and build or buy digital tiny whoops.... With DJI I think I would be waiting for them to develop a lighter system that works for tiny whoops or buying heavier drones like the iFlight Alpha A75 HD Whoop and sacrificing some flight performance for increased range and the hd fpv experience. Regardless of the direction I go it is really exciting to see the new innovations with drones! Thanks for the informative and in depth video.

Using the Betafpv canopies with Razer nanos and Caddx Tubo Eos2 cameras with the Beta Fpv A01 vtx as a plug and play package. Using a de65 pro running gear (gnb27 series connector), on the NBD frame with carbon plate and small Velcro strap, and additional split lite board and cam mounted in larvax canopy is spot on 32g. The 12k kv should help bump the flight time a bit. Still on the fence about getting SB. Thanks for showing us what can be done with a little testing. Never really thought about ways to cut weight, but lately I have seen so many quads aimed at that. This one definitely gets me thinking of some odd ways to do it. 3d printing a canopy seems a bit heavy, so instead I am thinking of thermal forming one from a soda bottle. Removing all needed connectors seems like a decent weight savings. How many amps do you think it pulls? Xt30 seems like it may be overkill.

I would really like to know how you can tune your quad so good like in the video so it stays so locked in. My quads is really floaty and drifty
@NickBurnsFPV
@NickBurnsFPV 3 жыл бұрын
There are really two parts to the flight. One is the tune the other is us. I tune by feel, which helps with the way I fly. I have been flying 5+ years, knowing (hearing and feeling) what does cause quads not to fly very well helps me change pids to correct those issue. Also understanding that a "perfect" tune doesn't exist, at some level all quads have limits to how they can fly well, and how to fly them to avoid shaking and other often seen as tune issues. My advice is to fly often and make small changes to learn what kind of tune fits your flying.

Great video! And best looking picture and lack of interference I have seen in a video about Sharkbyte yet. Might be a chance for Fatshark to take part of the market again. I am personally a bit concerned if they can actually transform their company from basically building googles and instead innovate in electronics and software like DJI. I do not feel that confidence, seeing how they have handled product development in the past. Would love to fly whoops with that experience and quality you show us here, but no... it is too much money to also invest in Shark Byte. Nick - What's your take on the digital options available for micro guys? Given that the only options are Shark Byte and DJI would you say that if you are a sole micro guy one should invest on Shark Byte instead of DJI or still wait it out? I know that Shark Byte still doesn't compare to DJI when it comes to image quality but will Shark Byte ever catch up on quality? or will DJI ever shed enough weight to compete with Shark Byte on the micros front? I will love to hear your opinion on this!
@NickBurnsFPV
@NickBurnsFPV 3 жыл бұрын
For a sole micro flyer shark byte is the platform to invest in. We have seen shark byte with three different boards already, and the development continues. I suspect we will continue to see whoop boards as well and fatshark is working on making the boards smaller/lighter. The image quality will catch up to a degree, I think its largely the camera performance that needs to catch up. There is a new HDZero camera for sharkbyte, while its not a nano does look good from what I have seen. I don't hold high hopes Vista/DJI will have much more development. We haven't even seen a software update in a year or more, let alone a hardware/vtx update. We have only see new cameras and antenna. I often wonder if the vista/dji system was a testing method for the DJI FPV Quad. I also don't care for the DJI goggles, and we have seen v2 not change much, doesn't give me hope we will see a smaller form factor of goggles anytime soon.

But it's nowhere near DJI in terms of image quality. It might be very interesting for racing due to the low and consistent latency.. or if you just absolutely love your goggles. Which is sad since I honestly don't really like DJI with their super-closed off system. On system update and they could use the beloved FCC hack and you are stuck with a 25mW system.
