Come face to face with several species of sharks at Tiger Beach, while on expedition with conservationist Jim Abernethy. Shark diving generates millions of dollars every year in the Bahamas, where the apex predators are protected by the government and there is a $5,000 fine for shark fishing.

Sharks are a big contributor in maintaining the health and balance of our oceans. What are your thoughts on the attempts being made to protect these animals?
@PaleBlueDot369
@PaleBlueDot369 5 жыл бұрын
Obviously it's great to see that attempts are being made to save them. People really require to have proper knowledge and understanding about the importance of these animals. How wonderful it would have been if everyone in the world would have got together to make the world better than what it is now.

SHARKS ARE A NECESSITY FOR A HEALTHY OCEAN THEY DO A LOT OF THE CLEANING UP. THEY ARE HUNTERS THAT WILL EAT ALMOST ANYTHING THAT IS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME. WHEN I GOT MY CERTIFICATION FOR SCUBA DIVING MY INSTRUCTOR TOLD ME "REMEMBER THIS, WHEN YOU SLIP OVER THE SIDE OF THE BOAT, YOU BECOME PART OF THE FOOD CHAIN. THERE ARE THINGS IN THE WATER THAT WILL EAT YOU AND NOT THINK ANYTHING ABOUT IT. " IT WAS A VERY SOBERING THOUGHT. I HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO DIVE WITH SHARKS AND BELIEVE ME, IT WAS VERY SCARY. AT 72 YEARS OLD I DON'T DIVE ANYMORE BUT I DO SNORKEL AND ENJOY THAT. AS FAR AS PROTECTING THE SHARKS, I THINK WE DO NEED TO MAKE THAT EFFORT BUT NOT TO THE POINT OF LETTING THEM EAT EVERYTHING ELSE. THERE HAS TO BE A BALANCE LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN NATURE. IT'S JUST LIKE PROTECTING THE DEER IN THE WILD. IF YOU KILL OFF TOO MANY YOU UPSET THE BALANCE OF THE HERD. ALL THINGS IN MODERATION.

@SURREY CROSSING, YEARS AGO MOST COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD WOULD USE THE OCEANS AS A GARBAGE DUMP AND THERE ARE STILL A FEW THAT STILL DO THIS. MOST OF THEM ARE IN ASIA. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PLASTIC GETS IN THE OCEAN IS AS IT MOVES AROUND IT STARTS TO BREAK DOWN INTO SMALL FIBERS AND BASICALLY STAYS THAT WAY. IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA OF THE BIG ISLANDS OF GARBAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN YOU CAN DIVE UNDERNEATH IT AND SEE WHAT LOOKS LIKE GLITTER IN THE WATER. WHEN THE SUNLIGHT HITS THESE SMALL FIBERS OF PLASTIC IT WILL REMIND YOU OF A SNOW GLOB. THE FISH WILL INGEST THESE FIBERS THINKING IT'S FOOD AND IT ENDS UP KILLING THEM. THEN THEIR BODIES ARE EATEN BY OTHER FISH AND ENDS UP KILLING THEM, AND ON AND ON. AS FAR AS DEER MEAT AND OTHER HUNTING PRACTICES, IT'S BASICALLY USED TODAY TO CONTROL THE POPULATION OF THE HERDS SO THEY DON'T END UP DYING OF HUNGER. IF YOU STOPPED HARVESTING DEER THERE WOULD BE SO MANY OF THEM THERE WOULDN'T BE ENOUGH FOR THEM TO EAT AND YOU WOULD HAVE DEAD DEER EVERYWHERE. SAME THING FOR THE FISH. THE PROBLEM WITH FISH RIGHT NOW IS, WE ARE OVER FISHING THE OCEANS. WHAT'S THE ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM? FISH FARMS. WE HAVE HUNDREDS OF THEM BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE PREFER NATURAL FISH THAT COME FROM THE OCEAN. I HAD A BROTHER IN LAW THAT WORKED ON A FISH FARM AND HE TOLD ME ABOUT HOW THEY WOULD PROCESS THE FISH, IT'S ACTUALLY QUITE INTERESTING. IT GIVES YOU A MUCH HEALTHIER FISH IN THE END. MOST IF NOT ALL COMMERCIAL OYSTERS ARE GROWN ON FARMS. I'VE BEEN TO A FEW OF THEM ON THE WEST COAST AND IT'S VERY INTERESTING HOW THAT'S DONE. IT'S ALSO VERY DELICIOUS. LOL

I don't think a lot of people really hate sharks. Like really hate them, hate them, I think it's more that people are scared of them. I like to watch sharks from very, very far away, because I fear what I don't understand, and I fear the fact that sharks are predators and there is always that slight risk of getting attacked. I think sharks are beautiful, I certainly don't hate them. And I love watching videos like this, so I can see them up close, and how magnificent they are. So thank you so much for the video.

I am grateful to National Geographic and other excellent documentary producers for showing us the way things really are and where we're heading. Sometimes we need to be shown shocking footage in order to finally realize how close we are to a real worldwide calamity. Global warming is a fact, and those who have been turning a blind eye for years would do well to let the reality sink in.Thank all the good people who are making a concerted effort to clean up the messes we've made, and learn that we are all in this world together, and what we do affects many other lives. Let's do what we can, brothers and sisters, to make this a success story. It's up to us. Thank you for this beautiful world, dear God. Please help us to unite for the highest good of all concerned.

Sharks are one of my favourite creatures and I constantly am working to protect them. Florida still allows shark fishing and murdering. One slight upside is that there is finally a special permit starting this July that you need in order to catch a shark. We should take note of what the Bahamas has done and not allow our predatorial keystone species to be killed.

People always have the same messages in these environmental videos. “Step up to the plate and make the change”. “We have to change right now.” What exactly is that? What do you want us to do? How can we help? Making vague statements isn’t going to get anyone to do anything. Give them a task or a answer. Tell them a way to help. Or don’t get helped. I’m all for saving the planet but I have a feeling it’s gonna take more than sorting my recycling.

I hate being in deep water like this, where visibility is only 10-20 meters. But it's more a fear of being out of my element and the unknown being so close. I've swum in shallow reefs with sharks before and I absolutely adore them. They're magnificent creatures and I don't really fear them at all, even though they're an apex predator in the ocean. Yet I still fear deep water.

This "need" for humans to kill all predators is so wrong. It is like we can get past the ancient past where cavemen killed the predator to feel safe and so they could get the game. We are so far beyond that and yet still these animals are hunted. We know now what a keystone species is, how vital they are not only to the ecosystem but to us. We have forgotten we are a part of that system and without it we die.

100% sharks are a vital part of the ocean and world ecosystem. I think your analogy though losses some people when you begin talking about the economics? are the right people making a living and being supported by that tourist industry? i mean are the local typical indigenous residents making a living from that or are expats from other countries utilizing that resource? is it a fair economic balance?

Yeah, they are more worth alive to people with a huge amount of money that can make an agency for diving with sharks. But poor people who are starving don't care... Even normal people don't care about that specific argument. I support nature and animal preservation, but it is kind of dissapointing that NatGeo uses such a lame argument.
