Kristian, thanks for bringing up this topic for discussion. I want to provide some information here on studies for our products and magnetic tech to clear up some inconsistencies. In tests on bull sharks in the Bahamas in collaboration with Discovery Canada, bull sharks interacted with the device over 1200 times. With the treatment (the repellent), 85% of the time, the sharks displayed avoidance behaviors. There were no attacks on baited dummys while the device was worn. Without the device, the dummys were attacked on average of every 46 seconds. For our fishing product, the Zeppelin, which uses the same magnetic tech, an extensive study by the Western Australian Government showed the device reduced shark depredation by an average of 65%. When only 1 or 2 sharks chased the fish, the percentage was higher, and when more than 2 chased the fish, the percentage was lower. It's important to acknowledge that our products, like any safety device, will never be effective in all scenarios around sharks all the time. The goal is providing an affordable, common sense risk reduction measure. Additional organizations that have validated Sharkbanz technology: Coastal Carolina University Marine School Florida Atlantic University Mote Marine Laboratory (on sharks and stingrays) NOAA Affiliate - Hawaii - Dr. Melanie Hutchinson Addressing the great white: we are restricted from doing any tests on great whites which simulate a realistic scenario in which an ocean-goer would encounter one. Regulations prohibit any testing which simulates a human or device used by a human or activity done by a human in the water. So, it's a bit of a catch 22. I think we can agree that throwing a tuna head to a great white and using that as a measure of efficacy for deterrents is essentially irrelevant when the real task is determining if one of these devices is effective when worn by a surfer/swimmer/diver etc. These animals are smart and can easily determine that the tuna head is food. In contrast, what we need to do as individuals is give a signal to the shark that we are not prey. These sharks are already wary of us in most cases, so these devices provide a way to give off a signal to that investigative shark that you are not food. Again, that will never be 100% effective, but it does reduce the risk. We are aware of at least 8 individuals who have deterred GW's in the wild using this product. In closing, I also wanted to say thanks for bringing up this interesting study on the reduction of global shark attacks if everyone wore deterrents. While we know that will never happen, it was an engaging thought experiment on shark deterrents and safety devices in general, much like seat belts and bike lights. Take care, and enjoy the water, Nathan Garrison Founder

Did i understand you correctly, you are not allowed to use something like a crash test dummy to test, if your device is effective against a white shark because of regulations? If that is the case, why don't you test your device outside your country where regulations are different?

I'm from QLD Australia and work for a Marine Research organisation for marine mammals. Thank you for calling out shark nets and drumlines. Not only do they not work- they have the potential to catch other animals such as Humpback Whales (who migrate up our coastline from July to October to breed) and their calves, turtles, and dugongs. Shark nets do shit all in preventing sharks, they just kill the wildlife we all fight so hard to protect. I was absolutely disgusted when I found out that NSW were putting in sharknets just before Humpback mothers and calves generally travel south. Of course you know all this but for anyone else reading- sharknets, drumlines and baithooks suck.

There is a podcast for the attacks in Réunion and one of the last happened to a group of surfers. Only one of them wasn't wearing a deterrent and got targeted. Can't remember the deterrents brand though. As for the use on GWs - if it does a breaching high energy approach from below, the shark will be in the active area of the deterrent for a fraction of a second and one will still be a goner.

SharkStop, an Australian company, have produced a wetsuit with panels fused to the neoprene which prevent the teeth of a shark penetrating the skin, you will still receive bruising and crushing injuries but you wont lose huge amounts of tissue and bleed out. I'd definately wear one of these suits coupled with a sharkband , one on my ankle and another on my opposing wrist to extend the magnetic field, as this would give me piece of mind. If the sharkband didn't work then I'd have a lifeline in the wetsuit.

Non-shark scientist here, so pardon me if I’m wrong, but sharks have many other methods of detecting prey, apart from electroreception. I believe they can detect changes in pressure, and can also utilize all five of our senses. It seems difficult to deter a shark attack by disrupting only one of their senses.
@SHARKBYTES
@SHARKBYTES 2 жыл бұрын
This is very true, they do use most of their senses, although some more than others. Smell and sight for sure, and as you mentioned pressure, via the lateral line. Then finally electroreception!

For a long time I have been wondering if it would be possible to use patterns of supposedly toxic/deadly animals that sharks never eat/attack ... for example a wetsuit with the pattern of the blue-ringed octopus (the unique blue rings) .... or of the banded sea snake (black and white stripes) -> that way the sharks instincts would prohibit any attacks ? Never read about any testing in that direction so far ... maybe we should start :D?

There's actually a company called Shark Mitigation Systems that developed a line of wetsuits along that line of thinking, banded in a similar way to sea snakes, not sure if they're defunct now as a cursory search shows their wetsuits are hard to come across but it has been explored a little bit.

From all I've read the only class of repellents that seem to be of any practical and effective use are the active electrical repellents, and of those the only ones that've been remotely tested properly and been proven to reduce close interactions over significant periods of time were those by Ocean Guardian (although the implications especially of the SARDI study seem to show that there's circumstances where a shark will have it's instincts primed enough that it pushes through any discomfort to go for an attack anyway). Even so I would only trust something like that to buy time to get out of the water, also an annoying side effect of how strong they have to be is the diving kit at least can get pretty zappy and uncomfortable, and the least effective deterrent is one you don't want to use. I think we're definitely a long way off true immunity to risk from shark interactions, at least until full titanium atmospheric diving suits become as cheap as wet suits anyway.

I'm a landlocked resident, quite the opposite of a place you'd find sharks outside of glass. That said, I spent some time in the USCG because of a fascination of the sea and such an alien world from my own. I tend to avoid going beyond waist deep in the ocean, which is fairly good at deterring any large critters from trying to check me out. If I were to venture into deeper waters in a place that is known for sharks to inhabit, I'd prefer something over nothing. Of course, measures to deter sharks can always benefit from continued study and testing. Knowing more about why sharks go for us is invaluable to building defenses that don't harm the shark or surrounding ecosystem. As someone who has a deep respect for all life that shares this rock with us, I think it will be great to see more of these advancements. I like the other ideas about certain patterns or colors that create a pause in a shark's willingness to take a test bite. Combinations of these ideas, disruption and visual caution, could bring that percentage up. It'll be interesting to see what comes next.

If everyone was wearing a shark deterrent do you think that could be more damaging to sharks that are influenced by them? Could overuse of them for example in Florida with the blacktips encourage the blacktips to leave the area? I think much more research is needed before I would consider wearing one, at the end of the day we are in their habitat we shouldn’t be making them leave

Good thoughts Megan, I don't know what the range is on the devices, but i can't imagine its more than a few feet/metres - so i don't know if it would distress them enough. I probably wouldn't. I grew up swimming in the intercoastal off of Amelia Island (major nursery area of lots of game fish, and the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry) Every year you'll see scalloped and great hammerheads, tigers, sand tigers, tons of bullsharks, and at least 5 tagged great whites pass through each year. If you swim here, you are always at least 3 ft away from a shark when swimming, you just don't always see it unless you have the right angle. But most people born and raised here are less afraid of the sharks than they are of the goliath groupers.

Are sharks capable of "Learning" ? You've said before they think we taste bad so having this little thing with us would like accumulate to them like - The frequency of it = human = bad food. And over time sharks would avoid the kind of frequency and therefore humans who don't want to encounter sharks at free will surfing or swimming in the open waters.

Yeah I get you, sharks definitely are capable of learning, some have said faster than dogs can learn! One of the difficulties i suppose is that a shark doesn't know something tastes bad until it test bites it. Great Whites have virtually disappeared in parts of South Africa where Orcas now patrol. Porpoises can also deter solitary sharks. We went out in the Florida keys and played the sound from a pod of dolphin and the sharks scattered while we were feeding them. I think scent, sound, and sight are factors that can be utilized. Just my opinion from what I've seen. Hate nets.

Without checking your entire back catalog, I assume you've read Capuzzo's "Close to Shore" about the NJ shark attacks? What did you think of it? I enjoyed how he gave the entire historical and social context of the time, which helps explain the reaction to the attacks. A vignette I was reminded of by you mentioning "sea dogs" in a previous video was some magnate betting he could dive into the sharks following his boat without coming to harm. A bet he won. Also the insistence of so many that "sharks are cowardly" so the attacker must have been a barracuda, or swordfish, anything but a shark. Anyway, as the kid who read every shark book available in the elementary school library back in the '70s (lot of bangstick hunting of nurse sharks, as I recall) I'd be interested in your take on some of the popular literature, and how it has evolved with our understanding of sharks.

If the algorithm leaves the water, it has no effectivity if you put a electronic emanation that has electromagnetic radiation of a certain frequency that acts upon the glands in the sharks nose, that perceive blood in the water, and will put it into a frenzy, and you can figure out the alternate algorithm to make a deterrent or a stun gun as it were, that’s wonderful but you won’t have enough electricity, or amperage to accomplish your means and less you have a landline and a giant pole sticking out of the water protecting the shoreline. If you know anything about electricity, you’ll know that’s true. And also, if you’re a little bracelet comes out of the water, your protection is gone! If you had the battery inside of the surfboard wired to the fins, which were the antenna, because the fins never leave the water, you might actually be able to save your ass otherwise no

Hey I know the people who never swim or surf near any beach. Want netting and drum lining gone. But there has been 1 fatality since 1937 on controlled beaches in Queensland. When uncontrolled beaches average around 20 a year In Australia.

The shark repellents could also alter shark behavior and severely disrupt their natural movements and possibly interrupt their breeding habits causing extreme damage to the shark populations. All so some rich kids can surf.
