I don't know, poor girl, but she did ignored all the shark signs on the beach, she was really unlucky to get attacked so hard, so quick, right before the Jet Ski lifeguard got her and If I'm not mistaken, I remember watching a censored video of her after she got in the street, with a lot of people and the lifeguard around her, and I got pissed off cuz she seems to not have any type of tourniquet on, the entire thing was so horrible. Was the first shark attack human victim that I saw a lot of blood involved, straight out of a JAWS movie, I'll always remember that, thank god the video had really bad quality. Now off-course, the Popov's attack tops that, I saw that uncensored, surprisingly you can't see blood, not that I remember, but what you see is worse. @@SHARKBYTES

@factchecker472
@factchecker472 2 ай бұрын
They did immediately go to culling sharks, it was only later they tried relocating them. Relocation is far more time intensive and costly, and there is no guarantee those sharks won't return. Their methods clearly didn't work, with three shark attacks off Recife last year. The only reason the attacks weren't as high from the 2010s onwards is that swimming and water activities are mostly banned in that area. All they've succeeded in doing is in maintaining the ocean there as a no-go area for humans and maybe improving the education of people of the dangers of sharks off the beaches.

@@factchecker472 then don’t swim there it’s that simple. If you choose to then that’s at your own risk, in this particular spot you won’t have zero incidents because sharks are hunting there and if you go there you risk getting caught in the cross fire. Killing the sharks won’t help the problem other than killing everything else it’s just counter productive across the board. If there’s a murder do we grab some random citizen and execute them for it ? No because it doesn’t make sense, same applies here.
@factchecker472
@factchecker472 2 ай бұрын
@@dreammaker9642 That's certainly a valid argument, I'm not a fan of culling large numbers of sharks either. But my point is that I think your praise of the scientific community in this instance is very wrong. It was the scientific community in Recife, led by the prominent marine scientist Fabio Hazin, which advocated and then conducted the catching and killing of over 200 sharks in the 1990s in order to study their behaviour and life cycle. Later they tried translocating the sharks and that method didn't work either.

11:36 as a Brazilian and northwestern who lives in the neighbor state to Pernambuco i can say we have the same conditions, same topography, same shark especies visiting here in Paraíba but we have the right environment, the ecosystem is balanced and there’s plenty of food. On top of that our most visited beaches have a reef barrier protecting everyone, but we still have beaches without the reef barrier and we have history of only one attack in all these years. You can easily spot sharks, dolphins and other marine life here and thankfully to this day we didn’t messed up our environment in such a way that would cause such disturbance to the animals and humans. Regardless Recife is still onde of the prettiest cities and you definitely can swim safely in neighboring states and cities like the one i live (João Pessoa in Paraíba). I was waiting for this video and absolutely loved it! p.s. You should definitely come here to see these beauties by yourself 😍

I swam in Recife a lot between 1998 and 2000. The beach was right across the street from my best friend's condo complex. I don't remember there being any warning signs about sharks way back then, but there were some real nasty riptides on that beach if you were an inexperienced swimmer, and no warning signs for those either. There were plenty of beach goers always there, so it never occurred to me that I was in any danger.

Me having watched this channel for a while now and getting hindsight having realized how stupid I was as a teen (I am mid 30s now). I had walked out waist/chest deep, more than half the length of a very long pier out fascinated how far I could get and still walk on the bottom (being 5’3” I was impressed), with some curious seals “playing” nearby me finding it so fun to have “sea puppies” so close thinking I was safe cuz hey I am next to the pier we good right, and not understanding why I was getting yelled at to go back to shore 👀 (this was a California coast in the summer months) Yeah, I get it now, I realize how lucky I was not to have a negative shark encounter 👀

I was stationed at Ft Ord when the Monterey aquarium was first opened. The kelp beds were thick in the area. I remember how I didn't like it wrapping around my legs and would go back to land. I later watched a video at the aquarium showing that great whites stayed on the outside edge of the kelp waiting for sea lions to exit it and ambush them. There was a video of one of them even grabbing a sea lion off of a rock at the edge of shore.

Recife resident here! Thanks for the video! It also pays to mention the sheer amount of politics involved with Suape (obviously), how they manufactured "scientific" articles to make it seem they didn't do any damage and that project of fishing sharks and returning them to the deep? Well, the guy who created that was highly controversial as there was several reports of his "scientific research" boats fishing and KILLING bull and tiger sharks which led many to make conspiracy theories about how he was actually on a payroll from the prefecture to cull the sharks. And since he was a well-respected figure among the federal and rural universities, he had a cult following of eager grad-students to do his bidding, he also had a lot of enemies, like a lot, especially the environmentalists, he was stone cold and I know someone from the inside that has actually received death threats and intimidation techniques for trying to expose him. Serious stuff. Apparently the project stopped because it got to heated and the prefecture just decided to end it. Also shout out to Lawrence Wahbas' documentary about the Recife attacks! :D

I remember swimming at Boa Viagem beach as a child and teenager with no fear at all of a shark attack. But yes, it was after the construction of the port of Suape to the South of Recife that all that changed. Reportedly, that destroyed the sharks' source of food and they migrated North. Thanks for the detailed video and the additional information. I have no idea either how this situation will evolve... 😕

Great video, Chris. I used to surf in the other spots south from Recife, Itapoama and Paiva beach, the water there was much more clear less attacks there, however you never can surf the same way. We learn ways to sat on the board keeping the feet of the water while waiting for the waves but it was too stressful. My mum put an end to it saying : no more surf for you boy "

I like that you went into the beach topography as a factor, not something I would have considered but makes a lot of sense as to why there's so many shark attacks there

I would love a creature feature on Port Jackson Sharks! Those loveable little sea puppies are so cute and interesting, and their eggs and life histories are very cool as well. I haven't seen many horn sharks on the channel, even though they are some of the oldest shark lineages out there. Speaking of old sharks, a video on prehistoric sharks would be awesome as well. Great job on your latest video, well researched and educational as always, and good luck for the rest of the season!

Hello again from Canada and sooo glad you're back! Wonderful video. Your explanations and theories are spot -on and I feel so sad for these animals. Habitat loss will just continue on for both land and sea creatures and it just breaks my heart. I love sharks and all other wildlife. Everything here has a vital purpose for the health of our planet. As time goes on I have less and less respect for our own species. Thank-you for another fantastic video.🥰🦜🐾 Could you do a video about the sharks around Haida Gwaii? I'm very curious to know how many species frequent the waters where I live. Blessings on you.

I remember going there around 2000, and the beach in question is not really not much adequate for surfing anyways, rocks and all. Better beaches would have been further some 50km down the coastline, where surfing was allowed and apparently safe… I did hear about the slaughter house (they said fish factory) back then as well…

A very interesting analysis! Very sad, though, that so many people have lost their lives... Irrelevant, but I also feel sad when I see skyscrapers on the beach. No respect for nature, unfortunately.

Yikes, brother, excellent video but that's one place where I wouldn't swim or snorkel. The sharks there seem pretty gnarly, probably lacking in their natural food source I guess, perhaps because of over-fishing. I saw reports on Tracking Sharks that some of the attacks there have been in less than waist deep water, too.

I remember Bruna Gobbis attack and saw the attempt rescue video. The life guards did good getting the girls in the wave runner but horrible job with Bruna after. Lifeguards carried her without putting a belt or something over her foot to stop the bleeding. They carried her up steps and she was still alive then to

Yes, agreed - no excuse for lifeguards at that particular beach not to be aware of what to do in case of shark attack.

i've been to recife a couple of times and they do have MANY warnings on shark attacks, still some people continue to go to the sea! even in nearby cities like olinda they do have many many warnings. Many fishermen say the construction of the huge port nearby messed up the environmental conditions and the sharks' feeding area in recife and the dates kinda add up to the shark attacks but the company that constructed the port always tried to silence the locals

Another great informative video Kris, thanks. I think I asked in the past, but I would love to hear your analysis on the sharks of Hawaii. Especially the topography of Maui Nui, the lack of Bull sharks(thankfully), Sharks of Hawaii, Whale seasons, turtle populations, tourist Galeophobia etc. We have had 1 fatality in each of the last 2 Decembers here in Maui, the Lady who was snorkelling with her husband and just recently the surfer at Pāʻia Bay. I, like many of the local Hawaiians adore sharks, even to the point of them being symbols of ancestors (‘aumākua). There is a lot of good feeling for them here, even though they do unfortunately get themselves in the news every now and then. I go to our local aquarium at least once a month to check on the female Tiger they have there. She will be released soon, she is getting a little too large for the tank, will miss her, but at the same time be so happy she is back home.

been there twice early 2000s . The same things you bring up around 12:00 were what locals pointed at as the start of recife's trouble with sharks. The location of the massive port 10k to the south was where the sharks used to hang out before the 90's. Whenever the topic came up, most people were convinced there was a correlation.
