I don't know, poor girl, but she did ignored all the shark signs on the beach, she was really unlucky to get attacked so hard, so quick, right before the Jet Ski lifeguard got her and If I'm not mistaken, I remember watching a censored video of her after she got in the street, with a lot of people and the lifeguard around her, and I got pissed off cuz she seems to not have any type of tourniquet on, the entire thing was so horrible. Was the first shark attack human victim that I saw a lot of blood involved, straight out of a JAWS movie, I'll always remember that, thank god the video had really bad quality. Recife resident here! Thanks for the video! It also pays to mention the sheer amount of politics involved with Suape (obviously), how they manufactured "scientific" articles to make it seem they didn't do any damage and that project of fishing sharks and returning them to the deep? Well, the guy who created that was highly controversial as there was several reports of his "scientific research" boats fishing and KILLING bull and tiger sharks which led many to make conspiracy theories about how he was actually on a payroll from the prefecture to cull the sharks. And since he was a well-respected figure among the federal and rural universities, he had a cult following of eager grad-students to do his bidding, he also had a lot of enemies, like a lot, especially the environmentalists, he was stone cold and I know someone from the inside that has actually received death threats and intimidation techniques for trying to expose him. Serious stuff. Apparently the project stopped because it got to heated and the prefecture just decided to end it. Also shout out to Lawrence Wahbas' documentary about the Recife attacks! :D

Well, sharks are mostly everywhere in the ocean, but depends on the species in the area and the water conditions that make it more or less dangerous. I am from a coastal city in Argentina and have seen sharks fished from the shore, where people bathe and there aren't any attacks. As per Brazil, I felt safe swimming in several places in the state of Rio de Janeiro where at least you can see 10/12 mts distance underwater.

Crazy what gets achieved when people use their whole brains, sounds like Brazilian government have no problem doing what their scientific communities say. It’s good they don’t pay them for nothing 😊
@factchecker4727 ай бұрын
They did immediately go to culling sharks, it was only later they tried relocating them. Relocation is far more time intensive and costly, and there is no guarantee those sharks won't return. Their methods clearly didn't work, with three shark attacks off Recife last year. The only reason the attacks weren't as high from the 2010s onwards is that swimming and water activities are mostly banned in that area. All they've succeeded in doing is in maintaining the ocean there as a no-go area for humans and maybe improving the education of people of the dangers of sharks off the beaches.

@@factchecker472 then don’t swim there it’s that simple. If you choose to then that’s at your own risk, in this particular spot you won’t have zero incidents because sharks are hunting there and if you go there you risk getting caught in the cross fire. Killing the sharks won’t help the problem other than killing everything else it’s just counter productive across the board. If there’s a murder do we grab some random citizen and execute them for it ? No because it doesn’t make sense, same applies here.
@factchecker4727 ай бұрын
@@dreammaker9642 That's certainly a valid argument, I'm not a fan of culling large numbers of sharks either. But my point is that I think your praise of the scientific community in this instance is very wrong. It was the scientific community in Recife, led by the prominent marine scientist Fabio Hazin, which advocated and then conducted the catching and killing of over 200 sharks in the 1990s in order to study their behaviour and life cycle. Later they tried translocating the sharks and that method didn't work either.

On top of that our most visited beaches have a reef barrier protecting everyone, but we still have beaches without the reef barrier and we have history of only one attack in all these years. You can easily spot sharks, dolphins and other marine life here and thankfully to this day we didn’t messed up our environment in such a way that would cause such disturbance to the animals and humans. Another great informative video Kris, thanks. I think I asked in the past, but I would love to hear your analysis on the sharks of Hawaii. Especially the topography of Maui Nui, the lack of Bull sharks(thankfully), Sharks of Hawaii, Whale seasons, turtle populations, tourist Galeophobia etc. We have had 1 fatality in each of the last 2 Decembers here in Maui, the Lady who was snorkelling with her husband and just recently the surfer at Pāʻia Bay. I, like many of the local Hawaiians adore sharks, even to the point of them being symbols of ancestors (‘aumākua). There is a lot of good feeling for them here, even though they do unfortunately get themselves in the news every now and then. I go to our local aquarium at least once a month to check on the female Tiger they have there. She will be released soon, she is getting a little too large for the tank, will miss her, but at the same time be so happy she is back home.

I don't want to sound like a weirdo, but recently you appeared in a dream of mine, haha. It wasn't anything too outlandish, we were just in a small rowing boat, making our way over some lakes and whenever a fish was visible next to the boat, you'd tell me the name of the species. Though at some point you went out of the boat onto an island and yelled at some kids that were destroying a tree there. (No clue why I had that dream, because I didn't watch any of your videos the few days beforehand... but thanks to you that was the first dream that wasn't a nightmare in a very long time - as in over a year )

Recife foi aos poucos sendo projetada para ataques de tubarões. Assisti uma palestra de um pessoal da Universidade que estuda essa situação lá. É trágico.

I agree with your theory regarding the high number of shark attacks in Recife. Its a constant ringing of a dinner bell for the sharks! Many thanks for your report.

Shark attack spikes always seem to occur when something is bringing shark in closer to shore, where people are swimming. Weather it a slaughter house, tuna packing plant, new construction, red tide, La Nina, El Nino, a heat wave, an oil spill, or any other dozens of situations, that is when you want to stay out of the water.

Your channel is awesome and inspire me!! I'm studying oceanographic and I always recommend your videos to my friends! And yeah.... anthropic activities will always harm the natural environment 😢 Huge hi from Brazil! I'm not from Recige though I'm from a coast state as well, Santa Catarina.

Even if you’ve got the notifications bell turned on, sometimes KZbin doesn’t show you.. weirdly. Regardless, Sundays at 9pm GMT there will always be a Shark Bytes upload!

Some years ago I saw a documentary about the exact same place, and the conclusions regarding the shark attacks were exactly the same, namely the harbour, the slaughterhouse and the deeper channel parallel to the beaches of Recife.
