My worst crash in my entire 17 years of biking was on my small Suzuki PV 50cc. I was doing maybe 40 kph when I did the classic move: Wet leaves in fall, too fast into the corner, slide, loose the throttle, and get catapulted on a highside. Well, as far you can get catapulted from a 650mm seat height, right? Well, turns out pretty far! I estimate I must have flown for about two meters, and landed DIRECTLY on my jaw, BANG. Got up, shook my head a bit, ran to the bike. Picked up my 65kg bike on my pudgy yet weak 15y boy's arms like it weighed as much as toddler's threewheeler. Adrenaline works wonders. Then I promptly collapsed for a bit, and walked the bike home. I can say, I'm pretty damn happy I was wearing a full face helmet even on that tiny moped that doesn't go very fast that I only rode in town! I imagine I might look a little different. I condemn no-one for wearing an open faced helmet. I'm just here as a cautionary tale: You can crash HARD on bikes even when you're just cruising the town. Full faced helmets are not just for canyon carving and track days ;)

At the risk of sounding like a harbinger of doom it is naive to think an open face is ‘the way to go’ at any time.i am currently recovering from a broken back , I was waiting to turn right when a van rear ended me, he was travelling at 25mph , my chin bar took most of the impact when I hit the tarmac which would have left me with facial injuries as well .i too love buying helmets but my open face days are over

One thing that I seems totally over presented and is quite possibly a failure in hot summer weather, is to wear black clothing, including black helmets. Black gets much hotter, much faster in the sun. However, its "coolness" factor makes the sales, I suppose.

I have trouble getting the mouth guard clipped in fully with a mirror, never mind out and about. So it's easier to put it on first and pull over my head. Fiddly. So it's then like a full-face without the safety or weather proofing of a full-face. I expect to wear it a couple of times and then go back to my DMD 75 with goggles in the summer (so good I bought two) and my X-Lite flip-ups (ditto) in winter.

Good to see the new shark helmet has a built in visor and improved mask as I found the Raw mask flimsy and the googles a pain to remove/attach to the helmet. I had the shark raw helmet but sold it due to being suited to intermediate oval type head shape when my previous shark helmets are usually suited to long oval (my shape) shame as it looks the biz! New version looks great too

Whilst I wouldn't really consider riding in an open face, I would like to have either the Shark Drak or that Scorpion Exo Combat helmet as a pootle helmet. Problem is, though, is that the pricing is wrong, in my personal opinion. In an open face helmet (probably polycarb) with a set of goggles and a mask, I'd expect to be paying around £150 to £170, not upwards of £200 when I could get the carbon race version of my current helmet for that same price. If they dropped the prices to a more reasonable level, then I think they would be a hell of a lot more popular with most types of riders, not just those with a bit more dosh. I think for any open face helmet, the price shouldn't exceed £180, unless it was full carbon, which is where the current price tag would be a lot more sensible.
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
it IS full carbon!!

This is an interesting alternative type of helmet. I too note the vast increase in field of vision with open faced helmets, and curiously they can be very quite as well. These are positive trade-offs for the lesser face protection compared to a full faced lid. If possible could you consider a review of the Davida line of helmets too? Thanks for your fun videos, Bob

Recently bought this helmet (different colour) and that "little bit of optimal distortion" from the bottom of the visor is actually terrible, especially compared to my older closed face SHOEI G force helmet. The S Drak is half the price of the G force and obviously open face, so my skin doesn't react to the daily wearing but I found my back starting to hurt from constantly having to look down to compensate the visor blocking my view of the rpm/speedometer. Does anyone know if the visor can be replaced with a different style? Located in Sydney, Australia if anyone has a link / knows a retailer. P.S. great review

Just my personal opinion -- the styling on this helmet is a bit "try hard." It's like -- you're already on a bike. If you can't look cool by the bike you ride, the other gear you wear, and a "normal" helmet (which can have cool lines, tinted face shields, etc anyways!), I'm not sure what you're doing wrong! Of course, I've always been the minimalist, unflashy type who pulls the sillier decals off his bike and gear.

Fair enough, I get it's not for everyone....

For sure, to each their own :).

SHARP won't give it a rating as they don't rate open face helmets. That is their policy (presumably due to lack of safety?) and as a result they didn't review the Raw either.

No problem. And thanks for the vids, always entertaining. As a fellow "gentleman of a certain age" I appreciate a KZbin channel aimed at bikers like me :) - save me from loud youtube channels from "youthful" bikers :) Keep up the good work. I am still chuckling at Reader's Rides.
