Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran On Why She Won't Invest In Rich Kids | IGNITION 2018

I’m now rich, I came from NOTHING. I’m the injured kid with ego to prove everyone wrong. She’s absolutely dead on accurate. For me it isn’t about the money, it’s about proving to the world that I’m worth more than dirt, which is all the value I was told I was worth. To me it’s about winning. Money means almost nothing.

I get what her take on that was. I grew up with a severe speech impediment and the drive it took for me to properly enunciate a sentence is the same drive I have towards achieving a goal. It was a struggle and speaking normal is sometimes people take for granted.

She’s not lying. Rich kids are very entitled, and believe they know everything while we from middle class don’t have that luxury. We have to work hard to get anywhere in life. My dad always told me, “people like us have to work twice as hard to get to where we want to be” and that’s true. Honestly, I rather have grown up how I did, then grow up rich. I’m able to appreciate things more, because I never had them. Shout out to all my working class Americans out there! We have the best lives, and live in the best damn country in the world! ✊🏼🇺🇸

It's interesting to see how income of parents can impact you as a child. My parents didn't have money until my dad sold the land he worked really hard to keep after 15 years of hard work. He was up til 3am and would get up at 5 on some days. He didn't get money until I was going into the adult world, so I never felt like a rich kid, I just felt I had a hardworking dad who bled for his work and it took years to have something to show for it. At age 20, that's inspiring to me and I hope to do the same rather than get a handout now

Ikr, its pretty privilege to assume Columbia is low rated, plus mentions her kids aren't that privilege since they have dyslexic. Her kids are still very much privileged even with learning disabilities. I'm sure Barbara got them access to good school and tutors to help out with dyslexic. If she let them cope with dyslexic on their own and spend them to low rated public school, then her son wouldn't even dream of going to Columbia. I am dyslexic, still struggle with it to this day. My parents are nice loving and supportive people but they couldn't afford to get me tutor or for me to go to nice private school that could help me with my learning disability. So I have to deal with my learning disability on my own. Which is hard for me to this day as an adult. It has cost me good grades and promotions.

Her son apparently had to scrap and claw to even get passing grades and got rejected from all the best schools according to her, but still got into Columbia, an amazing Ivy League school. Talk about privilege. Nobody is getting into Columbia with just "passing" grades unless there is some kind of connection or money. Basically, her son got into Columbia because he is a rich kid from a well-to-do family. So while she is generalizing kids on their parents hard work and wealth, maybe she should look in the mirror and ask herself, have my kids received the same benefits that I am talking shit about? What a joke.

bngr bngr your mixing up upper middle class with rich no one with half a brain would have invested in Zuckerberg because Facebook to start with wasn’t meant to be a public platform and the success was really attributed to the simplicity and usability(nothing predictable)of the site rather than anything Mark did as a businessman, not to mention he has no background in any entrepreneurial endeavors and if he was rich he wouldn’t have had to work during school to get some extra cash. Gates is a completely different story his family to an extent had a background in business and fairly affluent but aside from money he had connections other people could only dream of. You also have to consider the man was a merit scholar; money can’t and will never buy intelligence. Point is if you wanted reason to invest in him you could find some. Many rich people are aware of their place and know that they come from a powerful family and/or known the connections and backup plans that are accessible to them, thus care less or are not as passionate for what they do. It doesn’t matter whether your rich or poor but to be successful you have to be passionate and know what you’re doing and how you’re gonna do it. When you have a family worth billions, attend prestigious private schools with tuition worth more than some people annual income, and you can simply call a family friend and land a job that pays incredibly well it’s hard to have the attitude needed to be a successful entrepreneur.
