I mean, it got better. Discipline for a lot of things was a lot lower before the '80s so while this kind of thing is very rare these days back during WW2, Korea and Vietnam you'd see everything from shark's teeth and thunderbolts to pinup-girls(that one's iconic, especially for bombers) and intricate designs sprawled over entire airframes. Some crews even painted their bombs. Tanks and even artillery shells sometimes got this kind of love too. This kind of personalization is rare these days for a great many reasons, including the fact that it sadly catches a lot of flack from the international media. There are _two_ places where you _do_ actually see this kind of personalization - B-52s. Because most B-52s are _fucking old_ and their paint is completely irrelevant to their defense it's not uncommon to see nose art on them. Secondly, when you see pictures of M1 Abrams in the field - take a peek at the barrel, there's a decent chance there'll be something there or on the fume extractor(the bulge in the middle).

The Roland C.II was also known as the "Walfisch", so it made sense to paint a large "shark style" mouth on it. This plane had a few interesting paint schemes as well. One had fish scales, another a mouth like a fish. It was a fairly formidable plane for it's time as it was made of an all wood fuselage, which was hard to shoot down. Armed with a rear facing Parabellum MG14 and a forward facing Spandau, it was a tough kill for an inexperienced pilot. The Red Baron (MvR) actually started his long WWI career flying them in late 1915.

One reason there is less shark teeth or art in general is because of radar. Most modern aircraft use a classified radar retarding paint to reduce their radar signature. It is unlikely for the government to just give this paint to standard troops or get approved to use it by command. So a giant art piece in the front will create a much larger radar tracking surface. Along with other regulations and assignment rotation that prevent it of course. Personally I would like for every pilot to include some artwork on their assigned bird.

i'm glad you mentioned the RAF 112 sqn were first to put the shark's teeth on their P-40's in Egypt.. though perhaps their more famous application was the Flying Tigers... 112 sqn never had a movie made about them with John Wayne...

Dad was combat camera with the B29 squadrons in WW2. We have a stack of black and white photos of nose art on the bombers, Wichita Witch, Thumper, Brock's Car, There'll Always Be A Christmas, Texas Gal, Tokyo Rose, etc. None of the Enola Gay, but photos taken around Tinian at that time. There's area photos of Tokyo showing bomb damage, nothing from Hiroshima, though my sister says he told her that he flew over it sometime after the bomb was dropped.

The A-10 of the 23rd Tac Ftr Wg are the direct descendants of the original Flying Tigers. Our unit patch reflects this heritage. The 23rd TFW was once commanded by the son of General Claire Chenault, who was in command of the original Flying Tigers.

@@accountname9506 no they Mount 30mm and what makes it unique is that it is a much larger rotary cannon which means increased fire rate, not just a regular auto cannon.
@Justin-zi5io3 жыл бұрын
@@Mika-ph6ku rotary cannon does not increase the rof it just is the way the gun works
@Chrinik3 жыл бұрын
@@Justin-zi5io But you usually make a rotary cannon (or gun) to increase the rate of fire by spreading the heatload onto multiple barrels because otherwise it's wasted weight. Why have multiple barrels if you are going to fire them at a mediocre rate that one barrel could feasably archieve? In fact, revolver cannons work on that very logic. But they still use the faster and more reliable feeding mechanism to increase the ROF anyway, typically to the low 1000+ rpm. But you are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct. (Fun bonus fact, I only know of one actual chaingun in military use, and that's the 25mm Bushmaster on the Bradley and LAV-25...the bolt is run on a chain with an external motor...on further inspection, the 30mm cannon on the Apache is also a chaingun. )

Speaking of shark teeth and A-10s, there is only one USAF fighter group authorized to paint the shark teeth on their planes. Its the 23rd Fighter Group based at Moody AFB in Georgia. This fighter group is the successor to the American Volunteer Group, and the custodian of its history and legacy, including the famous shark teeth nose art.
