Sadly it looks like Steve Backshall has removed his comment (that I had pinned). I pinned it for you all to see because I wanted you to be able to engage in the debate we had with each other. As to why he’s deleted it, I don’t know - too many notifications, or a change in his opinion on Ocean Ramsey 🤷🏼‍♂️. I don’t delete comments here on Shark Bytes (provided they’re not wildly inappropriate) because I strongly believe everyone has a right to voice their opinion, regardless of whether they agree or disagree with what I have to say. The automated KZbin comment monitoring system however, I presume is a different story.

Hello Kristian! I just wanted to say that I appreciate your message of enjoying the beauty of the natural world and it's inhabitants *without* causing a detrimental impact to the animals encountered 💯 I also agree that for all appearances it seems that the actions of Ocean Ramsey tip the scales ⚖ towards being financially motivated exploitation of wild animals more so than being legitimate conservation or scientific research. All that being said, I do take issue with your _argument from authority!_ This video has a heavy tone of implying that the acquisition of a degree is a distinguishing factor between who is engaged in "real science" and who isn't. I'd be prudent to remind you that many (dare I say *most)* of the greatest scientific breakthroughs which changed the course of human history were made by people who *did not* have a "masters degree" in the relevant field; but were instead just people engaging in their lifelong passions👍 At the end of day, decades of hands on experience from a life of passionately pursuing one's interests will inevitably result in someone who is *far more* of an "expert" than someone who simply _holds a degree_ in a subject, implying they have base level of knowledge/ability in the general field relevant to the degree‼️ And I haven't even scratched the surface on the sheer amount of "published science" that was *only made possible* thanks to _citizen science_ done by hobbyists, locals, and everyday people... _Especially_ when it comes to things like data collection, describing specimens for taxonomic classification, collection of fossils for the paleontological record, etc. And if you spoke with the PHD scientist in fields that heavily rely on amateur/citizen science, they will unabashedly tell you how important & invaluable their role is 💯 I won't continue to beat a dead horse as I believe you're more than capable of looking objectively at constructive criticism and determining it's validity for yourself lmao. I do hope I've at least been able to persuade you to reconsider the stance that only a degree or publishing credits can validate someone as a legitimate contributer to science👍

@@EmpressOfExile206 hey! Thanks for your comment - hopefully you continue to watch videos across the channel, where you’ll see i have so much praise for citizen scientists (new research and creature features are where the praise crops up the most). They’ve been crucial for some of my research too. But like you say, Ramsey tips the scales the other way, and in my opinion unfortunately bothers wildlife for clicks, photo-ops and her business.

@@SHARKBYTES I would be interested to know your opinion on Jeremy Wade and River Monsters and fishing in general. The show was one of the things that inspired me to do a degree in Zoology. Although now I am a taxonomist and specialise in Coleoptera. However the majority of the field work I do involves aquatic sampling and I am lucky enough to have seen brook lampreys and the incredibly rare sea lamprey. I chose Coleoptera after my placement at the Natural History Museum in the Entomology Department. In entomology a photograph is not enough, you need a mounted specimen ideally under microscopy to appreciate the morphological characteristics to make a taxonomic distinction. A photograph does not allow you to do DNA sampling, produce a karyotype or dissect the genitalia. Like how entomology is dependent on collecting insects (responsibly), is ichthyology on dependent catching fish? I am aware of ways to survey aquatic vertebrates in terms of population ecology responsibly but surely a large part of the data you get is from an industry that is destroying the oceans and line and rod or electrofishing are cruel some would argue? And if photographic interactions is a main source of data for shark biologists surely there would be a massive skew based on anthropological factors, not giving an accurate representation of a species true distribution.

I heard another guy say once: “they aren’t malicious, but they do kill things for a living.” Grizzly Bears aren’t mindless killing machines either, but running around in the woods with them is a terrible idea. Close proximity to any large wild predator is not a good place for humans to hang out.

To reiterate your comment 1 mo. ago to a video from 6 mos ago, this reminds me of Grizzly Man, Timothy Treadwell, the bear enthusiast. Sure hope the same doesn’t happen to Ocean Ramsey, b/c aside from the tragedy, it will set back shark conversation (edit: conservation) even further. This brings to mind several more examples, the latest not about wildlife but deep water exploration with OceanGate. The lesson here: Just b/c you (think you) can, doesn’t mean you should.

The saddest part if this era we live in is that the people flock to the frauds as experts and mock the experts as frauds. Its what I call "the great era of human stupidity" and I wish I knew how long it was going to last because it doesn't see to be ending any time soon.

Eh that's how it's always been. Remember, if you go over the case, the Catholic church didn't attack Galileo because of anything in the Bible--but because Galileo contradicted Aristotle. Aristotle. A book that didn't even have anything to do with the book that was supposed to be the church's whole job. But the church's scientists--educated men who got off on being told how smart they were--well, they were incredibly angry that anyone would contradict their main text book. So they mocked the expert as a fraud, too; it's more dangerous to know a little than to know nothing. As long as most countries in the world are trying not to threaten the expert with execution, that's something.

As someone who grew up watching Shark Week (which, I know, has many a problem, but to me when I grew up was just like.... A week of ocean facts, and I loved that) I honestly thought that was the default perspective, right? Because a Great White can undoubtedly end you, and even if it couldn't, it's still a wild animal but at the same time that's all it is. An animal. It's just out there trying to live it's best shark life, and there is nothing to hate about that. Discovering that so many people take it to these extreme positions is still weird to me, even after years of being exposed to KZbin. I suppose in ways Shark Week prepared me for the "people who believe sharks need to be destroyed with fire" tribe, but then you have the, "I touched a nurse shark once and it was fine you can swim right up to a great white" people and both are somehow equally frustrating to try and explain why they really need to reel it in a little.

I understand that in the 70s I think when original jaws was made. I totally get it freaking people out but the impact that that.MOVIE had on peoples psyche, and their perception on sharks even to today is astounding to me and it’s incredibly stupid! Nobody went out massively killing crocodiles when Lake Placid came out and might I add they kill more people a year than sharks do! It’s just the stigma that surrounds that movie. I’m sorry I feel like it’s bullshit. Excuse my language but I haven’t seen anybody else’s outlook based off of a MOVIE about any other “killer” animals be completely believed as facts as it was in JAWS and therefore the sharks paid a HUGE price for that widespread ignorance and thaty how it’s been in peoples minds even to this day. I am so sorry I am so sick of JAWS and I’m so sick of people using it as an excuse as to why they hate sharks & fear them so badly! I know that this was not Peter Benchley’s intentions when he wrote the book of JAWS and as Steven Spielberg has always done in his films, made an incredibly spooky film, but that’s all that it was, and I know that Peter eventually had said “had I known that writing this book would have led to the onslaught of so many sharks, I never would’ve wrote it. “ so I think that sad that a man wrote a book that was really great and people took it and ran with it as facts. But I’m sorry I know this wasn’t what the video was about. I just had to throw my JAWS rant in! Lol!

If you think Ocean is bad for sharks, ask the up to 273 MILLION sharks that die annually to commercial fishing, loss of natural prey or habitat, plastic, etc how THEY feel about her trying to bring awareness to the issue of shark and ocean conservation. I'm sure those dead sharks, many thrown back in alive but dying with their fins cut off, would have a different opinion. You have an issue with Ocean doing snorkeling tours for a fee to enable her other conservation activities? What job would you suggest is more appropriate than being in the water? Or, are you suggesting that only full time researchers attached to a university and clawing and scratching at grant money are legitimate? We all have bills to pay. As an entrepreneur myself, I salute her for finding a way to pay hers and support her conservation activities while doing a job that is in her field. Besides that, her tour price is quite affordable for anyone who's already spending the money to travel to the islands. As far as the tours being just a cash grab, if you watch videos of them or look at what people say who've actually been, there's an education component to the tour that happens before the tour goes in the water. Ocean is good for sharks and the guy doing this hit piece video has jealousy issues, based on tone and lack of research.

My biggest gripe with influencers is that more often than not they're actually taking money and resources AWAY from the causes they're supposed to be promoting. We already have many excellent preservation groups that are only prevented from doing more good work by lack of funds and support, but instead of promoting these groups influencers set up their own brands and all the money you're manipulated into thinking goes for a "good cause" actually goes into promoting the brand. After all, you can easily justify paying your army of photographers and editors with "raising awareness" while not actually doing any conservation work.

I really appreciate her Freediving skills (as an ex-spearfishing guy) and I kind of like that she teaches people to face the shark and not panic or splash around in an encounter...pretty solid advice. Here is the problem; as a shark enthusiast I know that sharks are highly sensitive to having their ampullae of Lorenzini stimulated and will often seek to be stroked or have that sensory network stimulated again from what I've seen other researchers do. Yes, the films show her pushing down from the top of the head/nose area and not rubbing the sensitive area underneath the nose but I can't believe she hasn't tried what others have shown can be accomplished by using this technique and my issue with doing this is that it gets the sharks accustomed to it and genuinely anticipating it - so what happens to some tourist when these same sharks cruise right on up expecting to be "petted" in the right place? This is dangerous in my opinion because it removes the natural barrier of curiosity and careful trepidation these sharks would normally exhibit and alters their behavior in a way similar to feeding them for commercial shark dives.

Unfortunately, we're at a place where we need people driving the conversation about sharks. They are currently being fished at unsustainable rates, up to 273 million per year in total (estimate according to "Sustainability" by Porcher, Darvell 2022, based on 2013 data). That will eventually lead to extinction and several species are already endangered. I guarantee the channel creator that most people are unaware of that or the fact that sharks kill less than 10 humans per year (only 5 in 2022) . A bit lopsided trade for these man eating killing machines! My point is that the natural barrier is going to continue being broken by industrial shark fishing even if conservationists stay away from them. Sure, that would mean even fewer shark deaths by a potentially unsuspecting tourist, but such deaths are already almost zero, despite the fact that most human and shark encounters go unreported and unnoticed because they happen near beaches and we never notice the sharks.

@@Celisar1'm sorry to burst your bubble, but there is nothing brave about a person who purposefully puts themselves in extremely dangerous situations, to exploit animals for their own gratification, and profit. These are sharks, their minds work massively different from your house cat or dog, and even massively different from lions, wolves, bears etc (which all can be dangerous animals in themselves, and I still wouldn't get too close to any "domesticated" wildlife myself personally). Every time she enters the water she's putting herself at extreme risk, and she enters the water after the sharks she swims with in question have had a heavy decent meal..... As they're too full to attack anything else in her mind. All it takes is for another shark to come along who's hungry, at the same time she's swimming with a full one (which does happen now and again even for lone predators) Or for the shark she's swimming with to get pissed off and decide she's desert. When that happens (when not if, because the chance Increases each time this woman gets in the open water to swim with these creatures) Then the shark and many other sharks in the area will then get hunted and killed out of anger from the locals etc, and when a shark eats one human, there's a chance it could become what's known as a "man-eater" and if the opportunity arises, attack and kill other people, so the shark will get put down before a second attack if given chance. In essence she's doing more harm than good here. Most (not all) marine biologists will study the animals through sonar, tracking devices, cage diving (my preferred method if you want to get up close and personal with a shark, it still has its risks, but is far more safer in comparison) You will hardly see any actual marine biologist experts swimming on top of, grabbing and touching a great white shark. They know the risks, they know the harm it can cause as well. Edit: I absolutely love sharks myself, they're one of my favourite animals, but you'd never see me going out of my way to to touch, grab or swim with a great white, tiger, or bull shark especially so.

Despite the channel creator's assertion that most people know sharks aren't man eating killing machines, read the comments. I've seen exactly that several times, "she's playing with fire, that's a man eating apex predator." If people think sharks are just violent nuisance animals that ruin beaches, nobody will care about saving them from extinction. Ocean is driving the conversation. As for the lack of sharing of data, there's three sides to every story: his side, her side, and truth. We don't have her side and despite the fact that she's a public figure online, seems pretty private and low key personally. I'm from Hawai'i and am part native Hawaiian and the lack of respect for the sharks upsets myself and many locals. The shark (manō) are respected and revered and these people swimming with them encourages a lot of very irresponsible behavior from untrained people. There are average people convinced they can jump in the water with a tiger shark and push it to the side peacefully not realizing these videos have dozens of experienced divers around some with spears. Sharks are predatory and to not respect them and to share it on socials as much as they do is super irresponsible. It is so frustrating to see people like Ocean Ramsey promote swimming with them. So much disrespect and so irresponsible. They can put disclaimers all they want but humans can be quite naive and stupid and so many will engage in irresponsible and unsafe behavior because of their videos because they also want some cool pic or vid for the 'gram. It's only a matter of time before someone meets a tragic end.

as someone who tremendously values research and empirical evidence (i’m in the field of psych. & criminology), it is a huge red flag that someone who claims these things hasn’t provided credentials and has no peer reviewed papers published. i think you were quite generous towards her but got your point across eloquently and with empirical support. another red flag is the hypocrisy of using research buzzwords and not even following up when a well-respected scientist reaches out. i want to encourage you to continue speaking in scientific terms when explaining these concepts to us because i believe your audience is adept enough to understand, and you do a tremendous job of explaining these concepts. i appreciate this video a lot as i had my own reservations about Ocean in particular. i now have a much better understanding of this topic and it’s really sad how it appears she may (this is also my opinion and not fact) just be looking to monetize. she may have really cared about these animals and conservation at some point, but it’s now difficult for me to believe this is still what it’s all about. lastly, i do believe you don’t need a degree to participate in research and help out scientists, but you should be able to have the backing support of accredited individuals. this is extremely harmful to the scientific community, especially in times where there seems to be a growing mistrust based on willful ignorance and the spread of disinformation and misinformation. thank you again for all you do! 🦈💙

@@tourbillon13If you think you - or anyone - is able to "re-direct" a charging shark who actually decided to attack (rather than be mildly inquisitive, swimming between half a dozen or more divers) using Ramsey's re-directing method, you're a very naive moron. An attacking GWS you wouldn't even see: because they do hit-and-runs from below at great speed. If you were diving rather than swimming or surfing and happened to see the charging GWS by chance, it'll be at least twice your length and going to hurtle at you at ten times your maximum speed in the water. The Simon Nellist attack by a GWS captured on phone was both textbook in how it was executed by the shark (surprise attack with massive force from below, debilitating bite to mortally wound, let prey bleed out/die quickly, then safely return to feed on carcass) *and* very unusual (normally attacked humans aren't consumed, but "only" get the initial hit-and-run and die from that first bite or bloodloss or shock rather than due to being eaten) at the same time. Their attacks are geared towards minimum injury risk to themselves while pursuing very large, dangerous high-stakes prey (seals, sea lions and elephants have dangerous claws, teeth and mature males can be *as big and heavy as GWS themselves* , in addition to being quicker on the sprint and more manoevrable than GWS. Tiger sharks have a different attack strategy than GWS: with multiple bites to and the tearing off limbs. A tiger shark which has decided to attack for real will not be deterred by pushing its nose or head up or down, even if you were to manage to get over/under it once. Because *their* strategy is turning around and coming back multiple times. In that case, the best scenario is that you'll lose a limb and get rescued / pulled out of the water before you bleed out and the tiger finishes tearing you apart limb by limb while alive. See clips of them successfully hunting.

If a shark wants to attack you, no amount of you using your hand to gently redirect them is going to prevent that outcome. Ocean is desensitizing the sharks she regularly interacts with to being around her and Juan and other humans. She freaking NAMES the sharks-so you know it is the same individuals. I follow her and Juan on IG and the downright irresponsible things they do and then post like they are helping is the problem. I continually see them both interact in comments telling folks to come on and dive with OneOceanDiving. IT IS A BUSINESS and sharks are the ATTRACTIONS. Humans, sadly, are the “bait” but it’s working for Ocean and Juan. They appear to be making bank while propping the sharks up as pets with really big teeth. She calls one of the female tiger sharks “sweet” and gushes about her like that shark is a teddy bear. God help the unsuspecting swimmer who encounters that “sweet” tiger shark when it comes up for some affection and human interaction. Ocean and Juan are not in control-they are in business. Big difference. When a tragedy happens at OneOcean either to Ocean herself, Juan, their teammates, or the people who pay handsomely to go dive with the sharks, maybe some laws actually protecting the sharks from predatory tourist companies will get put on the books.

I don’t know, people are fairly dumb around land wildlife too. That said, I hear you, there is some weird energy around sharks. I think some of that is fear management. Sharks attacks are particularly scary, because of the helplessness or being in the water and the element or surprise. So people manage this fear by claiming sharks as non threatening and non violent. This is incredibly stupid as large predatory sharks have evolved to kill large prey. Deliberately putting oneself in their territory is asking for trouble.

Most large wild animals aren't killed in the hundred of millions per year without anyone caring because they're "bad" or "nuisance" animals that just make beaches dangerous. That last misconception, while sharks only kill less than 10 humans per year (a fraction of the humans killed by other humans with vehicles, about 30,000 vehicle related deaths per year in the US alone, for comparison). Meanwhile, humans are hunting sharks into extinction, fishing them at unsustainable rates up to 273 MILLION sharks per year. (according to "Sustainability" report by Porcher, Darvell) So, if nobody is talking about sharks, nobody is thinking about whether they ought to be fished into extinction. If people have the misconception that sharks are nuisance animals ought to eat humans and everything else, they aren't going to care about preventing them from being fished to extinction. It’s kind of insane how much seemingly conservation-focused initiatives like this drown out actual conservation and progress towards helping the species. I wrote a portfolio essay for college very recently detailing my process learning just how much of the knowledge I knew about the problems facing sharks had very little to do with reality. That’s pretty crazy to me, because I spent my entire life growing up reading and watching as much pro-shark media as I could get my hands on, and yet it turned out most of the information I had regarding the conservation of the species either was a small sliver of a larger picture, or obscured the facts completely. It’s clear there’s a lot of love out there for sharks in our modern day, but it’s more important than ever to keep the community responsible like this and call it out when it’s doing more harm than good. Remember that old TV adage? Don't try this at home... One day, and I fear sooner rather than later, one of these "influencers" is going to wind up realising that their shallow quest for views by engaging in dangerous activities such as this was not worth it. Then again, even when it does happen, the other influences won't batter an eyelid... Also completely agree with you on the middle ground argument, and that is why I am such a supporter of your work. For too long, I feel the pendulum had swung too far from Man-eaters to Harmless Predators when it really should be misunderstood, but on both ends of the spectrum. Years ago, sharks were misunderstood for being mindless eating machines, but nowadays they are misunderstood by a growing majority for being harmless animals that would never attack humans due to mistaken identity etc. In my eyes, a shark is an animal and an animal will do whatever it does to survive the following day. Whether that means it eating your best friend matters not to them. Sure, if a shark saw a seal in the water, it would hunt it, but if the same shark saw a human alone swimming, it is not likely going to pass up the opportunity. Of course, we are not the same quality as a seal, but we are still viable food. After all, I'd never touch a Pot Noodle if there was something better in the cupboard, but if I wanted something quick and easy, I'd not give it a second thought. I do believe, when it comes to shark attacks, that people need to stop believing that human beings are "exempt from attack" because we are human. I've mentioned this so many times before in the past that I sound like a broken record now, but I feel there is a certain egotism in humanity that makes up feel superior to animals regarding animal attacks, as if humans were not a part of the food chain because we perceive ourselves as the apex predator. Great video Kris, as always! Got me thinking and commenting anyway 😂 Hopefully one day you and Hal do get to do a collaboration. One of which was Steve Backshall who said he saw her working in 2013 along side Dr Mayrizio Hoyas. He commented recently and while I know nothing of their scientist brought up some good points. I was able to find one paper with her name on it published in 2021. I’m so glad you made this video. I don’t know a ton about sharks but I have seen enough exploitation of wild animals on this platform to spot red flags and alarm bells started going immediately as I was scrolling through her page. A good rule of thumb is pay extra close attention to anyone directly handling wildlife, never speaking on potential harm or danger to their activities, and any potential profit motives that might be at play. I learned so much about the lengths people are willing to go to exploit exotic animals for profit when I fell down the monkey rabbit hole. It has fundamentally changed the way I approach animal content online. To any lovers who wish to learn more about the exploitation of primates on social media I highly recommend the channels monkey sentinel, exploited monkey, and yardfish. I am glad I found this video from the comment section of one of those shark diving videos so now I can direct others to this video as well. This is the kind of awareness we need more of with more and more people looking for any way they can to make money on social media no matter the harm it causes. KRISTIAN / SHARK BYTES / ALL: Ocean Ramsey's videos are also mostly IN SLOW MOTION!!! Giving the highly deceptive illusion & impression that one can expect interactions with sharks to be reasonable, logical and calm, and give you plenty of time to slowly, gracefully, rhythmically and gently maneuver and "redirect" the shark if / when necessary. You summarize the central difference between a *researcher* and an *influencer* at the end of the video. Ramsey wants to draw attention to herself, her books, and merchandise and influence opinion based on her actions. You're a researcher who wants to draw attention to the subject of the matter. The fact they never responded to your request to do a peer review study shows just how much they're not interested in working together because there's no revenue.

Ocean's own words on the matter from an interview 4 years ago, "They are such efficient apex predators. Trust me. If they wanted eat you, they could. A lot of people don't give them credit for that." She said that while pointing out that most times sharks encounter humans, they DON'T eat us. Keep in mind that most human and shark encounters go completely unnoticed by the humans swimming, surfing, etc near the ocean beach. That's what she's doing by showing non lethal interaction with them. Showing that sharks aren't just eating everything nearby, which is something a surprising number of people think. Nobody is going care about preventing a man-eating nuisance animal from going extinct because the Chinese want to eat mercury laden shark fins. Ocean is actually pushing the same line as this channel, that sharks aren't the "man eaters in need of being destroyed" they've been portrayed as and which many people still think. But, that they are also strong, wild animals at the top of the marine food chain that should be respected. Even if "influencers" and "shark profiteers" leave the sharks alone, the industrial shark fishing industry won't. Is it better if people learn about and talk about sharks while they're still around or after they're extinct?

Ocean Ramsey's video with her swimming alongside an enormous Great White was stunning to me. In fact, back when I first saw it, I always thought Great Whites themselves would never pass up an opportunity to prey on a mammal, even if they were full, I thought they would be too territorial. It was a risky shot, but I still find that video to be insanely beautiful. I am not deluded into thinking Sharks are puppies of the sea or anything... But the information you bring up about the repercussions of that video, the fact sharks fled the area because of tourists is very depressing. It would have been more convenient if she uploaded that video *after* the sharks had finished the carcass. I do see the harm though in others attempting to mirror this stunt. I just wanted to say that her video did alter my perspective of Great Whites and I felt like it impacted me positively. I don't condone emulating that behavior nor am I pleased with her lack of action with actually helping shark conservation by collaborating with scientists. It's deflating that she has info to contribute that could help these animals and she hasn't done anything about it.

@@SHARKBYTESI also think it’s important to keep in mind that animals whose biological ancestors are very distant from our own don’t think & feel the way we do, particularly when they’re hardwired to operate in very different ecosystem. Building a sympatico with your dog or cat is one thing. We’ve got a fair bit in common & have spent a goodly amount of time evolving interspecific relationships between our species. Sharks are very, very different from Homo sapiens. Their intelligence is as alien to ours as ours is to theirs. Studying their behavior so we can coexist better is one thing. Anthropomorphizing their behavior is something else, something pretty unhealthy & potentially dangerous.
