I have never heard a whiting called a sea mullet before...lol...around here most people call them either whiting or their high class name The Southern Kingfish..Either way they are one of my favorite to catch off of the surf and man you are right Randy they are GOOD EATING!! Looks like you and Viv had a great relaxing day! too bad in all the sharks you caught you didn't get to pull one in like the one you found on the beach!! Man that would have been a fight on a toothy critter that big!! I hope you and the family are having a great one this week and thanks for the great video brother!!
@fatherandsonsfishing
@fatherandsonsfishing 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lance, I appreciate it brother! I've never targeted the bigger sharks, but in seeing videos and real-life catches, that looks like the fight of a lifetime. It's funny how you say the high class name is Kingfish because I think that's what a lot of the locals think about calling them "whiting," so the reason I call them sea mullet is that's what most of the OBX locals say, lol. It might get a little confusing to some folks, but I kind of like how we can have several different names for the same fish. Several years ago, I was fishing on a pier in NC, and had a whole conversation with this guy. He kept talking about Rockfish and I had no idea until I looked it up, that he was talking about what I call Striped Bass!🤣

What an awesome trip! I'm not the best in shark ID either, but I think that giant shark might be from the Genus Carcharhinus. Apparently it is quite hard to ID to species. When I visited the Outer Banks, there were also quite a few big dead sharks. I even saw a super cool looking Angel Shark! Cool Shark eye shel too! I had good luck finding shells in the ramp 48/49 area and east from there in the South Beach area. Thanks for sharing!
@fatherandsonsfishing
@fatherandsonsfishing 2 жыл бұрын
If you are able to just casually mention the correct genus, then I'd say you're selling yourself a little short on your shark ID skills! HOWEVER... you needed to get Carcharhinus brevipinnis for full credit. I posted this video on a OBX fishing page on FB and asked for help on ID, and it was indeed a Spinner Shark. I guess it's not really cool since it was a dead fish, but that's cool you were able to see an Angel Shark! And you are spot on in terms of the shelling location. I haven't posted the video yet, but shortly after filming this video, my son and I shelled in that exact location and we found several nice whelks!

Haha Dave, you got that right about rolling on that dead shark. She's 13 years old and I've had plenty of experience with her rolling on things far more decomposed than this shark. Knowing she would be riding in my truck all day, I did not let her go anywhere near that shark!

How appropriate to find a shark eye shell near that dead shark. Catching dogfish is fun unless you’re on a party boat trying to catch Cod and then they tangle up the lines on either side of you. Fun times with the curious pup.

I hate to say it cuz it might not have been legal but If I find a dead shark that size I am pulling out my knife and cutting those jaws out. What a great addition to my wall of bones.
@fatherandsonsfishing
@fatherandsonsfishing 2 жыл бұрын
I've only caught dogfish from the surf, but I can imagine they would not be fan favorites on a party boat. I will say they are pretty tasty. I'm hoping we'll have another chance to catch them this winter/spring and I'd like to do a catch and cook.
@fatherandsonsfishing
@fatherandsonsfishing 2 жыл бұрын
@@bucktalesoutdoors7566 100%! The only reason I didn't do that was because I wasn't sure about the shark ID. There are several species that have no regulations and if it were one of those, I can't see why cutting out the jaw of a dead fish would be a big deal. However, there are several that are also restricted and I decided that wasn't a conversation I wanted to have with the National Park Ranger or Game Warden. 😳

@@bucktalesoutdoors7566 Yeah, I didn’t want to be THAT GUY. Also - and I’m sure you know more about this than I do - but I know when it comes to shed hunting, that at least in some states, there are different regulations for finding a dead head vs just a shed, and I didn’t know if that logic even applied to sharks. I can just see the game warden looking through the back of my truck, “Thanks for cleaning up that trash, sir, but eh what’s that large shark jaw doing back there?” Lol!

The dogfish sharks we caught are pretty plentiful this time of year and actually good to eat. We may need to do a C&C sometime. If I would have landed that 7 footer, Vivi would have either barked a lot, or got her head bitten off. I am glad we didn't have to find out.
