It is clearly an English folk-song as Scarborough is in north Yorkshire which i can assure you seeing im from Harrogate The actual fair at Scarborough was an annual trading fair which lasted for 45 days starting on August 15. It was granted a charter in 1253, and ran until 1788 when competition from other fairs made it untenable. Traditionally, the herbs in the song have the following associations: parsley - festivity sage - wisdom & immortality rosemary - remembrance thyme - courage & strength

The name can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when the northern English city of Scarborough was an important meeting place for merchants from all over England. A major 45-day trade show, from 1,253 to 1,788, called Scarborough Fair, The song was probably written in the 16th or 17th century. It is likely that it came from the Scottish folk ballad The Elfin Knight. After being transferred from city to city, it changed many times. Today it has 11 elements. The song is about a former couple of lovers who now set unsurpassed tasks between them to become a couple again. what counts is their effort. And that it can also be interpreted as an invitation to a man in his previous love, who asks him to take on seemingly impossible tasks, to try again for him or her. However, an unwanted pregnancy is possible. The refrain "Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme" initially does not make sense to a listener today, but has symbolic significance and can be considered as a request or prevention of an abortion for then. It is therefore also possible that as a Cambrian theme the future child. The fact that they are ex-lovers also shows that the two are not married and makes the problem of the child between them clear. It also becomes clear that someone communicates in an encrypted way, after realizing the relationship and its consequences was considered a sin before the wedding, and it was a major scandal for that time. in-Teesdale, County Durham, England, sang "Scarborough Fair" to Ewan MacColl in 1947 Martin Carthy learned the song from MacColl and included it on his self-titled debut album in 1965. He taught the song to Paul Simon the same year and Simon & Garfunkel released his own version, which was extremely successful. Prior to that, Bob Dylan used Martin Carthy's version as the basis for his song "Girl from the North Country" from The Freewheelin's second album, Bob Dylan (1963).

[Verse 1] Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true love of mine [Verse 2] Tell her to make me a cambric shirt On the side of a hill, in the deep forest green Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme Tracing of sparrow on snow-crested ground Without no seams nor needle work Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain Then she'll be a true love of mine Sleeps unaware of the clarion call [Verse 3] Tell her to find me an acre of land On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Washes the grave with silvery tears Between the salt water and the sea strands A soldier cleans and polishes a gun Then she'll be a true love of mine [Verse 4] Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather War bellows blazing in scarlet battalions Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme Generals order their soldiers to kill And gather it all in a bunch of heather And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten Then she'll be a true love of mine [Verse 5] Are you going to Scarborough Fair? @@sharmsong The original lyrics I was taught (and never forgot) from school days in the early '70s (before the S&G version): Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Remember me to one who lived there, For once he was a true love of mine. Tell him to find me an acre of land, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Between the sea shore, and the sea sand, Then he shall be a true love of mine. Ask him to plough it with a lamb's horn Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme And sow it all o'er with one peppercorn For then he'll be a true love of mine Tell him to reap it with sickle of leather. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, And bind it all up, in one peacock's feather, Then he will be a TRUE love of mine! Well will you make me a cambric shirt, Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, Without any seam, or needlework, Then she shall be a true love of mine. Then will you wash it in yonder dry well, Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, Where water ne'er sprung, nor drop of rain fell, Then she shall be a true love of mine. Tell her to dry it on yonder bare thorn Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Where blossom ne'er bloomed since Adam was born And then she'll be a true love of mine Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Remember me to one who lived there, For once she was a true love of mine. The first three verses are sung by a jilted woman, the latter by her lover (some variants the order is reversed). Both set impossible tasks for the other to complete before they will ever love again. Other versions of the origin suggest it is based on a Scottish Song, The Elfin Lord - tasks set by the Elf Lord before he will release her to return to her home.

"The lyrics of "Scarborough Fair" appear to have something in common with a Scottish ballad titled "The Elfin Knight" (Child Ballad #2), collected by Francis James Child,[2] which has been traced as far back as 1670. In this ballad, an elf threatens to abduct a young woman to be his lover unless she can perform an impossible task ("For thou must shape a sark to me / Without any cut or heme, quoth he"); she responds with a list of tasks that he must first perform ("I have an aiker of good ley-land / Which lyeth low by yon sea-strand"). Dozens of versions existed by the end of the 18th century. A number of older versions refer to locations other than Scarborough Fair, including Wittingham Fair, Cape Ann, "twixt Berwik and Lyne", etc. Many versions do not mention a place-name and are often generically titled ("The Lovers' Tasks", "My Father Gave Me an Acre of Land", etc.). The references to the traditional English fair, "Scarborough Fair" and the refrain "parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme" date to 19th century versions and the refrain may have been borrowed from the ballad Riddles Wisely Expounded, (Child Ballad #1), which has a similar plot." Good Job, all involved.

My first reaction was, "Damn, she looks just like Liv Tyler"... then I realized that it was Liv, from Lord of the Rings... LOL. Beautiful rendition.
