Fun to go along with Sharon as she flies the DA 62, one gorgeous airplane. Hoping to revive my flying adventures after a few decades. The hoops I'll have to jump through just for a 3rd Class medical will be the deciding factor. Assuming a 3rd Class Medical is in my future, once I'm back up to speed, I'll spend some time (and money) and get checked out on the DA 40. I'm really liking what Diamond has done for GA.

Now you said the right points on this awesome airplane, what the great advantage is to understand. Thanks for pointing it out on the point. Even Diamond could not bring it to this point in their videos. This plane has some remarkable technical advantages to old school planes. Is stage cooling necessary or recommended on these engines? If you pulled the power back like that on a turbo charged Avgas engine, it would be detrimental to the TBO times. One of the big reasons why used airplanes on the market have rebuilds way before TBO is because they didn't stage cool the turbo charged engines (especially coming out of altitude).

When did the 80's become a long time ago?????????? Damn. Great discussion on the engines but address the life limit on the parts for the engine. Mechanics always say Diamonds are easy to work on pull the part throw it away and wait for the new one to show up. The price point is a bit painful but the cost per hour when factoring in replacement parts is the choke point.

I think Diamond created the best GA twin well ....ever created ... They could have simply went with the latest Lycomings and would have still had arguably the best twin out there but Diamond did the unthinkable ... developed their own engine which no one in their right mind in general aviation ever attempts ( history is strewn with attempts ) ... It is a profoundly difficult road and a testament to the fortitude of the Diamond owners and engineers ... and it is of course diesel which makes it thermodynamically quite a bit more efficient than avgas

Pay careful attention when flying to Smyrna, TN. People tend to fly into KMQY and forget to return from whence they came. Don't even think about staying past 10 days--get home. We can't take any more of you SoCal, NorCal, Chicagolanders, New Yorkers, and even Floridians moving here. Texans are okay if they were born in the Lone Star State and not from Austin. Middle Tennessee is now full--go home! Seriously, this gentleman is the perfect guy to be an instructor. Beautiful airplane and even more beautiful young lady. In your pre-take off discussion, I'm sure you discussed things like T/O abort, engine failure, etc., right?
@DanFrederiksen3 жыл бұрын
It's great that Diamond pushes some progress (it's not a high bar in aviation) and in many ways it is a cool plane, 4 seats like a car (a bus like private jets just waste fuel) 2 engines for redundancy safety, kinda cool it runs on jet fuel, it's a capable bird with decent range HOWEVER rather than settle for heavy complex diesel engines that are still massive noise and vibration makers blocking the airflow and weighing the plane down, look at it and take the next logical step. DA62 is 1600kg empty, that's not light for 4 seats. Sling TSI is half that weight and uses half the fuel. Lancair IV-P is also half the weight but it's closer to twice as fast as the DA62 yet still better fuel economy. A margin that should not be possible. And the DA62 is 1.2million dollars. So it's a capable plane but there is still enormous potential for improvement. What Diamond could do is place a similar cabin in a minimal weight carbon fiber teardrop body that by its compound curves is naturally rigid and pressure compatible as a pure shell without bulkheads. And then put two tiny turbofan jet engines on it at the back. For a total empty weight of maybe 400kg. Because a small light plane needs only tiny jet engines to go fast. And you have the smooth quiet stable operation of jets, the extreme coolness, maybe double the speed of a DA62 yet better fuel economy. And because it is light and simple, it can be done much cheaper than 1.2 million. Ironically such jet engines at maybe 15kg each are much easier to manufacture than those diesel engines. And don't let intuition betray you. The range record of 40000km without refueling belongs to a simple turbofan jet engine, the williams FJ44. So if jets can give us as good or better fuel economy while going twice the speed in heavenly smoothness, what are we talking about... Imagine how exciting a product the Diamond DA62 would be if it was quarter the weight, twin jet going twice as fast and costing half. There is such extreme potential. It's ripe for the taking. A Bonanza is not that far from being a 100 year old design. In a tech world, how is that possible.

Ok, but it's 7 seats....
@DanFrederiksen3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSoaringChannel well it can technically have a third row but this one doesn't seem to have it and most don't because it is at the expense of cargo room and is pushing it's useful load. Say you have two americans at 100kg each up front, then the rest can weigh 50kg on average and carry no luggage. It's not really a 7 seater, it's not even a 5 seater. It's a large 4 and a chunky 4.
