Sharon being bisexual herself, she became quite serious when he raised the topic of the community being upset with the film. She stated that she understood why they would be upset because there is a long history of gay people being the bad guys. Super proud of her for saying this back then.

The gay community was upset with the film when it was first released because people hated gay people, especially during the 80's and 90's when everyone blamed gay people for spreading HIV/AIDS. There were a lot of violence toward gay people during the 80's and 90's. The last thing that the gay community needed during that time was for Hollywood to portray gay people as evil and bad people when there were already a lot of hatred toward the gay community during that time. That would only increase violence toward the gay community. Bravo to Sharon Stone for understanding why the gay community was upset with the movie.

Some militant members of the gay community in the United States were upset by the film, not all by any means. European audiences couldn't have cared less.

​@jochenstossberg5427 Absolutely. It was a ridiculous overreaction. I'm from the UK, gay, and came out at my final year of school in 1987 so i know what it was like in those very different times but I never agreed with the militant anger over this film. Stupid and embarrassing.
