SHARP EDGE in a DANGEROUS STORM a SERIOUS MESSAGE Blencathra LAKE DISTRICT WILD CAMPING UK Tent Test

On Friday the 1st of October a man died whilst attempting Sharp Edge. The actual incident (Number 91) is on the Keswick Mountain Rescue website as well as on their Facebook page and in the news. I have spoken to the Mountain Rescue regarding this incident and agreed that highlighting the risks and dangers with videos like this, especially being an accident hotspot, will contribute positively towards mountain safety. The Mountain Rescue risk their own lives and have actually lost their lives to save the lives of others. Their work is paramount to the safety of people in the mountains and hopefully we will never need their help but you never know.

I feel that explaining the dangers of these places will hopefully make people think carefully and act accordingly to pursue challenges with more planning and care. The mountain rescue constantly are called out to people that are uneducated and under prepared for their mountain adventures and therefore suffer the consequences, sometimes the ultimate consequence. I hope this may help even just a few people make a better decision on their own adventures.

Alan the man who died was my husband Paul. He was a man who loved the outdoors and sadly he and his friend took a chance that day ( although both experienced walkers) and that is why he will never be coming home to me and our daughters. Sad to say that I witnessed the fatality you discuss . I was one of of four people on the sharp edge when the accident happened. I literally saw the poor guy fall, he was around 30 yards in front of me at the time. The vision will stay with me for the rest of my life. I don’t think that he slipped, It looked to me that he lost his balance as he simply fell backwards,having no ability to stop himself. Sharp edge, is a great climb if you have the nerve and some scrambling experience, but when it’s wet, just forget it. Hats off to the mountain rescue team who were simply amazing.

I have had several friends who have died whilst carrying out their passion for the mountains. i also spent two years from 1998 to the new year 2000 with the Amble-side Mountain rescue team. I have to take my hat off to you mate for doing sharp edge in them conditions.I've done it a few times and it still makes your heart pump a little bit faster😂All mountain rescue team members are all absolute heroes. One of my mates tragically lost his life on sca fell pike in 2019,and all the search and rescue teams did absolutely everything above and beyond. I love walking in the fells,especially in the Lakes, but as I’ve got older (now in my early 50s) I’ve become far more cautious with my choices. I really wouldn’t fancy Sharp edge now irrespective of the conditions. I do fully appreciate though that some people are completely unfazed by exposed ridges etc and I’m sure Alan is one of them. You’re doing a great job of putting out really interesting content Alan and I’m sure your channel will go from strength to strength. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

My son and I have had Sharp Edge on our bucket list for years. We were in the Lakes last summer, and we were in the north eastern fells one day when the weather was really dry and there was no wind. Sharp Edge was on! So we finally conquered it for the first time last year - and I'm 68!

Yeah mate I won't do Sharp Edge, Striding Edge or Swirral Edge with the other half. She's been decent hiking up in the mountains (She's done Blencathra, Blease Fell over to Scales Fell), Helvellyn from Glenridding, Skiddaw via the zig zag path of doom, Dodd, Lord's Seat/Barf but I don't trust her footing to do something with an exposed edge like that as she's not the most 'stable' person a lot of the time in terms of balance. To the extent I insist on our walking single file (with me up front) down steeper loose gradients and the reverse going up. Keep safe mate and continue exploring the beautiful world of the Lake District.

Spent some time in snowdonia a couple of years back with 80 mph winds and was so grateful to be well trained and have decent kit. So easy to underestimate how powerful nature can be. Wow, braver man than me. I would of stopped at Scales tarn and got myself back to The White Horse. Closest I got to Sharp Edge was a family camp at Troutbeck and the backdrop was Blencathra with fantastic sunset behind it but most of the time it was hidden in thick cloud aka Claggy. It looked dangerous through binoculars. Glad you highlighted the dangers in this video and did it with extreme caution. I am massive fan of your adventures and glad you share. Hi Alan, This has clearly has had an effect on you and I am glad that you posted the video in this way. It has struck a chord with me too. Last week I had to carry out CPR with a few of my team mates to a gentleman who had collapsed. Sadly, he too did not survive. We carried out CPR for around 25 mins before advanced paramedics and ambulance teams arrived and took over and they worked for a long time before taking him to hospital. His wife told me afterwards that he had long covid since June of last year and was short of breath with heart palpitations. I too had covid that month and have been left with the same symptoms and it suddenly hit home with me and cannot help think, but for a trick of fate, it could have been me that day. Since watching your channel I have taken every opportunity to enjoy life and the outdoors but mostly sharing it with the ones I love. My wife and I once had a close call while hiking in Utah. As a result, we rethought what our expectations were for our hiking and set some rules that we do not break. A personal rescue beacon was part of that rethinking. Also, the hike is more important than the destination. Once we hit a time limit, we turn around regardless. Always put your safety first. There is always another day, another hike.

I did sharp edge a few years back at 51, it's very exposed, but didn't find it too bad, the stones there are polished by all the use it gets, I definitely wouldn't do it in bad weather, rain or wind, if anyone wants to try it, I would recommend it first as a day hike, with a very small pack, in light winds, and definitely in the dry, great vid as usual mate, but personally I would of turned back at the start of the ridge, it's always better to live to fight another day , stay safe matey 👍

@@BUSHMANandBLUE I'm 48 now and I grew up in an urban area, but as kids we would seek adventure at every opportunity, building dens on wasteland, lighting fires that occasionally got out of hand , climbing trees to attach old rope we'd find and make swings, times were a bit different then but come school summer holidays myself and my best mate would dissappear every day and become Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. Respect to you my friend. I once rescued a lone Walker from Sharp Edge. He confessed that I saved his life but I only did what any of us would do to a fellow Walker in difficulty. I know of a few who have met their fate up there. Can’t emphasise enough how serious a walk this is. Take care out there 👊🏼

First did Sharp Edge when I was 16 with a friend and I’m now 62. In the intervening years living nearby has allowed me to do it many times in the dry, the wet and under snow and Ice. I always find wet conditions the most thought provoking because of the slape nature of Skiddaw Slate. I would recommend that first timers only give it a go when dry and relatively calm. Even in such conditions I’ve coaxed folk along who’ve become unsure. The point where last Friday’s tragic fall occurred is an accident black spot. Enjoyed your video but out of interest why did you approach on the right side of Glenderamackin Beck rather than the normal left - necessitating your near expensive leap across? Stay safe and look forward to more videos👍

Very good information! It’s definitely very slippery when wet. The mountain rescue were telling me that is the most common accident spot. Well noticed on the walk towards. I just hadn’t seen that stream before so fancied a walk up it. No one else would know that 😉 Thanks mate.

Can I just say, there's alot of these types of wild camping videos out there but yours stand out by not only your production quality but also you jovial yet serious attitude. Well done. Brilliant stuff. I watch all your videos, being 80 years young it is all I can do. I have walked c2c four times and several other trails as well as having an obsession with the Lakes where like you I was always going. For two months per year the fells where my objective.. my body is worn up for such adventures now, I can only walk in the low valleys a few miles per week, BUT WATCHING YOUR STUFF brings it all back. Great video, and such a good message. I've been up Sharp Edge quite a few times, once had to help a guy who'd got cragfast on the climb at the end. Quite how he got as far as he did I don't know. Backed out last time because of wind and rain. As you say so clearly, for 95% of us it is way past sensible unless conditions are right and even then it needs a lot of respect. It's why we go there though isn't it!

We attempted Sharp Edge a few years back in the sunshine although underfoot was wet. A few years before we'd done Crib Goch and we do Tryfan annually so we know our limits. We got to the sloping slate part, my Scarpas had been slippy all the way up, mostly on the worn shiny rock, we had a brief conversation and both didn't feel it was worth the attempt in those conditions. We turned back, descended a bit and went more north to ascend. We always trust our inner voices. @BUSHMAN and BLUE My tip over the waterproof trousers, always store them zips open so you don't have to mess about unzipping, removing gloves etc when they need to go on.

Many wouldn’t take their dog but most of the time their dogs are very much unconditioned to these adventures and definitely are not under control. Blue and I have an exceptional trusting relationship and have being doing these adventures since a pup. I understand that people’s comfort zones are very different and people need to respect their own. At all times through this I was completely in my comfort zone with my dog and at no point felt unsafe. If you know Sharp edge you’ll also know I didn’t film any of the more technical parts because you definitely need your hands. I just hope people understand the risks involved from this video so that they chose weather to take on Sharp edge in accordance to their own comfort zone especially with their dog. Thanks Al

I personally think going up in those conditions on your own with Blue was irresponsible. Filming with one hand in the conditions on the edge was very poor. You were not also putting yourself at risk but also the mountain rescue. So when would it have made you turn back. Previously I have enjoyed your videos but personally think this was putting yourself in danger as well as Blue and possibly the mountain rescue 😔

I actually didn’t film any of the parts that were higher risk. Also the filming I did was different to my normal as I said in the video I wouldn’t risk going past the camera for the shot and climb back down for it. Yes there is always a risk but at all times I felt confident and within my own comfort zone especially because I took my time and chose the safest route. Blue is under my control and we have a very strong trusting bond with our adventures. If I felt in an unsafe position I would have turned back as I said in the video with no hesitation. Thank you for your concern.

Hi Al, great video, I have personal experience of sharp edge. A friend of mine and me started it in good weather, however just after "bad step" the weather turned and we got snow..... Another great video. I came down Hall’s Fell Ridge a few days after a guy got killed coming down. It’s quite hairy with tricky footholds. His wife saw him fall from her route down Middle Tongue. As much as 8d love to be able to just scramble, I've long since given up the idea of traversing crib Goch or sharp edge. I suspect even striding edge is beyond my limits of exposure. I'm envious of folk who are more confident, it's a bit of a handicap when walking with a group.

Just come across this video Al. Good on you for stressing the dangers of this short sharp ridge. If the weather isn't good, it is flipping awful. Four of us have been doing a winter walking trip for the last 25 years usually first week in December. One year, we did Sharp edge, weather was mild but misty and claggy, and the ridge was like an ice rink with the wet. Slow moving, hands on rock, and all good. But, as you stress, if it's out of you capabilities, or comfort zone, don't attempt. Great work you two, keep it up. Ozzy, Gloucester.

Yes mate many people learn the hard way and end up really struggling. Pretty easy in dry good weather

Just watched your video and my heart was in my mouth the whole time. I did Blencathra about 15 years ago up Sharp Edge and swore never again. It was very tough. I’m doing Blencathra again next week hopefully but up the easier route. So sorry to hear of the man’s death xx
