Doom bar isn't Doom bar any more. Not since Sharpes was sold many years ago. It was amazing about 20 odd years ago. The bottled stuff is not even brewed in Cornwall any more.

I’ll be trying out the Hatherwood. Thanks. Doom Bar is one of those beers that was destroyed (watery, less rich) once Sharps was taken over by a multinational. Tragic.

Shark Bay is decent, I dont normally do amber ales, certainly not Doom Bar. Just noticed today in Lidl that the Purple Panther/ Purple Porter has had the abv reduced from 5% to 4.5%, refused to buy it, probably ruined it and for what? Put the price up instead.

Used to drink doom on draught in Devon when it was still Sharps independent owned, was a full bodied malty beer. Since they sold out the beer is nothing like the original. I sometimes think the big multinationals are just grabbing the trademark name then budget brewing using less hops and poorer quality malts.

Yes, the same thing happened to Boddingtons, which had been a good beer when brewed at the the old Strangeways Brewery.

Sharps was bought by Coors a few years ago and it changed. It's not brewed in Cornwall for starters....

The cask version is, but I think the recipe/quality of the ingredients has changed as the beer is not as good as it was.

Loved Doom Bar when I visited Cornwall (14 years ago near the brewery in Rock). Liked all Sharpe's beers. Still not bad but ales never truly translate to bottle and everything changes once a brewery is taken over by a multinational.

Just tried bothe together and you are spot on. The Sharks Bay definitely outperformed Doom Bar, as well as being cheaper too. A no brainier for me. 🙂

Quite correct Carlsberg Marston product, I bought from Sainsburys Winter Warmer Ale at 5.3% brewed by Eagle brewery information where brewed is on the back label and I'm pretty sure it's Youngs Winter Warmer rebadged at the original strength.

I find that Doombar is good on draft and in cans, but in bottles it always tastes sour to me, not sure why

I’d never tried doom bar but people raved about it so tried it this year I thought was awful watery flavourless. Shark bay tried today without ever hearing about it was so much better had taste and body will have shark bay again but never try doom bar agaih

I think the two finger head on the Shark Bay may have been down to the pour. You poured the Doom Bar steadily to the end but got the Shark Bay 'glugging' as indicated by the large bubbles left in the bottle.

Hi Both aldi and lidl have some very good beers/ ales and if you search out the brewery's they are both produced by major brewery's whats not to like

The trouble is that with doom bar anything not in a barrel is brewed up country using their water. A totally different taste from a pint from a barrel.

Looks like I'm off to lidl tomorrow. OK I went and here's my say... Doom bar wipes the floor in terms of flavour and in fairness mine had a great head. That said shark Bay is certainly not a bad beer actually its better than most. I just found doom bar sweeter and more refreshing.

Doom Bar used to be a treat when a regional brew. But once it became a national brand I avoided it. Bottled IPAs are not my thing, so if I buy any I stick to. Y local Tring brewery offering.

I spent several holidays in Cornwall and Doom Bar was almost as good as St Austell's offerings. The last time (and it will be the very last time) I tried Doom Bar in a bottle, it was utterly bland and uninteresting. It was almost as bad as Worthingtons used to be. The cask is still decent, but not the pint it once was. Just another example of a big brewer buying out a small, quality brewer and ruining it.

tried Doom Bar at a Wetherspoon once and didn't like it. I found it to be very watery and with not much flavour.

Based on this review I thought I'd try shark bay... Big mistake! To say it's anything like doom bar or the old doom bar is way off the mark. It tastes like nothing other than a standard Marston offering with their horrible yeast notes dominating anything. There was simply no resemblance to doom bar in any shape or form. Why did I think it would be anything different lol

Never understood the Doom Bar hype whatsoever, it has never really been popular in Scotland and anytime I've been south I've thought it was awful, watery bland rubbish. As you said in your review, looked like it had been lying on the bar for 20 mins after the first pour.

I’ve just watched the video , if someone gave me any of them it would get tipped into my slow cooker , same thing with Brains SA and Rev James that are dreadful, I’ve just returned home from Morrisons with 2 bottles of Roosters Baby Faced Assassin and 2 bottles of there Roots Rock Reggae ,4 for price of 3 for 2 fantastic beers. Shark Bay is a decent standard bitter. Perhaps we spend too nuch time analysing every beer. Going back to the late 70s/early 80s when I started drinking,, most real ales (yes,, I know we're talking bottles here!) were fairly stanard - what's not to like with this?

Doom Bar is a light beer, but coloured and flavoured to appear maltier than it really is. And the fact that a Cornish marketed beer is brewed in the Midlands, just makes the whole thing a big fraud in my mind.

Molson Coors own Sharp's Brewery. They also own the Burton-on-Trent brewery were DB is brewed. I presume that the Shark Bay is also brewed there for Lidl by Molson with perhaps a few minor tweaks just to set it slightly apart 👍

For those of you who like Westons 8.2% cider (Vintage with a black top) it is in Aldi marketed as Orchard cider.....exactly the same. Doom bar is sold as Shark bay....simples

As an Englishman who has never seen a skunk I find the term "Skunkiness" totally unenlightening. But the rest is good. I understand the rest of the terminology and, having tried a Shark Bay today next time I'll buy one of each and do the same direct comparison. Thank you for this - but please keep it in english.

Hatherwood Shark Bay was originally brewed by Marstons, it is now brewed by Shepherd Neame (Brewers of Spitfire, Singha) Having also just done a side by side, I also have to say, I prefer the cheaper Shark Bay. From a long standing Doom Bar drinker, I am pleasantly surprised how good the Shark Bay is.
