This really is one of the best Sharpe episodes. Lots of previously set up characters doing important things.

More Sharpe's reviews! I LOVE Sharpe. Also the Hornblower Series is a good one to review too.

I've listened to the audiobooks, and they generally run to 2x 6 hour episodes. The 'Sharpe' episodes run to 90 mins max. It can only be a precis at best.

The late great Pete Postlethwaite was my home town's greatest actor so yay/sigh for him. Also even more bonus points cause 'Oh gosh its the one Liz Hurley was in.' The song 'Over the hills and far away was a re release, originally when it was sung during the War of the Spanish Succession it went. 'Queen Anne commands and we obey, over the hills and far away' they switched to King George when the Peninsular war broke out. Oh look its the 60th Rifles The Royal Americans originally formed to support the militia in a particular set of Colonies, converted to riflemen from 1797 onward's. Wasn't Taylor an American in the books? The Kings German Legion. which featured heavily in the books as elite troops were Hanoverian's who had escaped to the UK to serve their Elector, plus side switching German POW's from Confederation of the Rhine regiments, ITV could never afford really large armies and no CGI was used. Sharpe's hat is much like all the rich Warlords in The Last Kingdom or Vikings running around without the elaborate helmets they should be wearing. It must not be there so he can be recognized. Excellent reaction to a series which I absorbed inwardly many years ago,

Also good fortune to any of the Ukrainians who served in the French army in this series who 29 years later will I presume be serving in militia units, Ukraine loaned infantry battalions to ITV to provide the manpower. They'd now be in their late 40's to early 50's

Mark me! Another one of my obsessions, though I haven't seen these in years. I read many of the books but stopped at a certain point. Right after his second wife deserted him, I think. I would LOVE watching along with you. I certainly share your excitement. I went on a Crimean War streak after this and even wrote a Crimean War character-- who for a lot of reasons was transformed into a Clive of India era soldier with Eyre Coote's 39th Regiment of Foote. But he started with Sharpe. Anyway, waffling on there...Yes, please, on the Sharpe reactions.

And of course I didn't mean a soldier of the Crimean War, I meant a soldier of the Napoleonic wars in Spain. Sheesh.

So many great actors but Daragh O'Malley is really the greatest one here. Calling your mother for help - now that's soldiering.

9:56 Jeez, he's giving away Voltaire and DeSade? Next, he traded his roast beef sandwich for vegemite, and wrapped a fish in Action Comics #1.

I've never seen any of these episodes but it does look interesting. Of course I like Sean Bean. I love him in the Harrison Ford movie Patriot Games.

6:55 "The Rockets are like Stormtroopers.". There's really nothing wrong with Stormtroopers' aim, when they're allowed to use it. The plan was to follow the tracking signal from the beacon secretly installed on the Millennium Falcon. If the rebels didn't get away, the plan would fail. Any trooper who jeopardized the plan would answer to Lord Vader. They had to fight like devils and consistently miss every time to let the rebels get away. (The Rockets are just lousy shots, is all.)

For anyone who hasn't yet seen this lovely show, do watch the series in order, not at random. Although the show is somewhat episodic, there are characters and plotlines which carry over from previous episodes and lend context and emotional weight. Same goes for the Hornblower TV series by the way. Also, though neither of the book series was written in strictly chronological order, I'd still recommend reading them that way, especially the Hornblower books.

@@alexachipman The first episode I saw was "Sharpe's Company". Loved the characters, especially Theresa, but definitely felt I had missed some things on the way in.
