I am a machinist/toolmaker and will never use this jig. Agree, it does drill the hole in the video, however, as the drilling process started I can see that the drill is not done properly. Unfortunately, this is not the correct way !

I've watched a number of videos on this subject tonight and yours is the simplest and most effective for an old codger like me. Thank you very much. Going to watch the one on how to make the wooden thingy with the groove in it now.
@ravenshield78233 жыл бұрын
Make sure your rest board, or at least you bit will sit above the center line of the wheel so your cutting edge angle isn't ass backwards and then this is a good idea.
@silkyway65753 жыл бұрын
@@ravenshield7823 Thanks for the tip. I actually made mine out of a bit of scrap steel and put a couple of clips on it so that it's always in the same place when I attach it to the grinder. I might be able to grind a bit off the back edge so that it tips up a little at the front.
@MaxMakerChannel6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this! I build one and it works super well! I never successfully sharpened any drills before, but it works now. I found that cutting the relief is most important. I made my jig so the sled has a grove and the bench grinder now has a channel to slide along.

I watched this video years ago and always had it in the back of my mind. A couple days ago I was drilling through steel and the bit wasn't going anywhere. I decided to just touch it up on the grinder and see what happens. I did it free hand and was sloppy but it literally took 15 seconds. Went back to the workpiece and was drilling through the steel like it was pine. Perfect, long spiral shavings. My mind was blown. Had to come back to see the jig. Now I see you're offering it for sale. I could make my own but will probably buy one just to show my support. Thank you!

Love it!! I've had a drill doctor for many years, don't use it because it's just too slow. I've got one grinder with wheels just for drills, but never have been able to get them consistently right. This is just too simple and too effective. I've got many dozens of bits which need to be sharpened at any given time. Putting a lip on the edge of the plywood to guide it at 90 degrees on the tool rest would help.

Thank you for the jig idea. Made one and promptly fixed some drills that were broken in half and now they are just shorter than they were new, but cutting nicely.
@paulhunt598 Жыл бұрын
Sharpening broken drills only works marginally. This is because the web thickness increases the further you are from the designed cutting edge. This forces the larger non cutting web to have to plunge through the material or requires a larger pilot hole.

@sadhananarendar29926 жыл бұрын
Just another suggestion use the same jig for a single point tool keeping it on the flat part and not on the" V".Just also mention that the drill bit needs to be above the centre of the wheel only then you would be able to get the desired relief angle on the drill.incase of making a precise hole say the next operation is reaming you could create a cylindrical land by spinning it on a spindle and then relieving it with a 0.1 cylindrical land.appreciate your efforts and thanks.Great Video

Great little jig!! I was trained to sharpen drills free hand using gauges if it needed to be super accurate. A skill not many have been able to learn from experience of trying to teach over the years and whether it's just coincidental but sharpening drills more and more pointy is usually the most common mistake I see in the workshop also !!! I can definitely see how this could benefit the workshop!! And so simple to make!! Great video 👍

Wow--now I understand why there's a groove cut into one of my grinder's tool rests. It's a bit sharpening jig! Thanks for this video--I always wondered what that was meant for.
@AskWoodMan9 жыл бұрын
+TheMadroaster That is what the groove on your grinder is for. But since it is stationary relative to the wheel you tend to wear the wheel in just one location which causes problems and requires dressing the wheel frequently.
@TheMadroaster9 жыл бұрын
+AskWoodMan Thanks--That's good to know. I don't sharpen many bits (or often) so I may be able to use it instead of making the jig. (Not that it's any trouble to make the jig--thanks for the video!)

Best video on hand-sharpening drill bits I've seen. I think I'll make a jig and see if I can do a better job than my disappointing Drill Doctor 750 SP that I've tried to use for many years without good results. I can see making a tool rest that has a 118-degree notch ground into it that would always be ready to touch-up a bit. (and the dog can't carry it away). Thanks.
@AskWoodMan8 жыл бұрын
+DFWKen The problem with fixed grooves in the tool rest is you wear your stone so unevenly you are constantly having to dress it. It forces you to park on that one spot on the stone. The grooves are also a pain when you want to do other grinding operations. Just an irritating spot for stock to get hung up in.

@petermetaxas96969 жыл бұрын
Set up a bench grinder for drill bit sharpening only. Have the groove cut in in the tool rest permanently. Thanks for your videos.
@AskWoodMan9 жыл бұрын
+Peter Metaxas The problem with the fixed groove is that you are forced to use just one part of the grinding wheel so the result is either over wear in that one location or constant wheel dressing.

I like this simple jig. I'm not bad with free-hand now after 30 years of practice but I might still make myself a jig like this. BTW, your largest drill would probably have cut fine even without coolant if you slowed the RPM's a little.

Absolute faceplate! I can't believe that I've never seen a jig like this. I was taught how to sharpen freehand by experienced guys and then did so myself for years and years. This is a fantastic way to start the grind off right. A little freehand for the relief, and you're done. Great job. The only thing I would add is to use a drill gage to make sure you've got the same amount on each side.
@paulhunt598 Жыл бұрын
A properly ground drill will have equal chip load on both cutting edges. His demonstrations seemed to produce uneven chips. He only got the spiral chip on one flute. A little more care to even or equal the flute grind would have produced a better drill. I am ready to try his jig trick since I have never mastered free hand grinding. I also have a Baldor tool grinder and the cupped wheels are designed for ""side" load and the relief angle can be set with the onboard table protractor.

Sorry I am just beginning woodworking and really appreciate this man's straight and honest style and concern with not wasting things. My silly question is the length of the bit not the tip. I guess that isn't as important or can't be sharpened. I just found old bits which have rusty edges in some cases. Also might I ask? I bought a set of drill bits Makita. I have dowel bits or brad point bits for woodworking and "masonry wood bits"..? Do they mean masonry bits? Confused by the term. And finally I inherited a cordless Bosch drill. It doesn't have a setting for hammer action. Should I not use it for drilling with a masonry bit.? Thanks for the useful video.
