Lovers of 1095 Carbon Steel often cite that it would be the easiest thing to sharpen on a rock. It's time to take an ESEE 6 by Randall's Adventure gear and test that theory! For the last couple years, I have been collecting the flattest stones, crystals, shale, pumice, lava rock, sedimentary stones, and oysters & shells from my hikes, beaches, waterfalls, and general remote holiday locations throughout the North Island of New Zealand.
Let's sharpen some ESEE 1095... With 15 different rocks!
Also check out my tutorials on dual grit sharpening.
What's a dual grit edge, you may ask?
Think: high performance aggressive knife edge!!! This method for versatile razor sharp knives is fast, easy, and leads to edge retention increases of up to 50% in some tasks! Watch my tutorials to quickly learn innovative hand sharpening techniques with whetstone, diamond plate, & honing strop.
The dual grit method is a specific method for sharpening one side of the edge coarse and the other fine - an updated tutorial is below:
• CPM MagnaCut Dual Grit...
And the results have been observed by independent testing:
• You Won't Believe How ...
If you're curious about the science behind the edge mechanics, check out this scienceofsharp.com article in which Dr. Todd Simpson analyzes the effect:

Hi, nice test 😊 Beside knife, I am quite like the rock hounding as a hobby. I know that NZ is famous for it Green Stone which is a nephrite jade. Some people in my county Indonesia do use nephrite jade as finishing stone. Maybe you can find some NZ green stone and try it. Hope this helps

I have wanted to!!! I have not found any of the Greenstone out in the wild, so have been hesitant to call it a "survival option" - however, I have a necklace. Maybe I should give it a try!

@@homeslicesharpening nice !, maybe I will try it too. Still have some jade, serpentine, jasper and agate , etc in slab form. Never try it before tough, For my carbon steel, natural sharpening stone is quite cheap here 😁. As alternative media, as I live in a big city, people throw away their used terracotta, ceramic , marble tiles. So I just pick it up and used it.

Nice! I have gotten decent results from marble and terra cotta! Let me know if the Jade seems to do well. Cheers.

All those survival cosplayers seem to be willing to tape anything to their sheaths except a piece of sandpaper.

I always attach something to sharpen my large knives to the sheath. It’s why I don’t give much mind to the “sharpen it on a river rock” line of thought, why not pack a sharpener also rather than deal with Rock shaped bullshit?

Haha - fair enough. I usually just take a small piece of sharpening gear in my bag. I don't find it weighs or inconveniences too too much. I just figured if there are gonna be people subscribing to this theory, we should test it at face-value, as it's not a hard theory to test! Take care.

@@homeslicesharpening Regardless, thanks for putting the myth to test! It’s cool to see actual testing of these things.
