I found your channel when I was recently stuck at home with the virus...and have been binge watching ever since. I have nearly 500 unwatched KZbin videos waiting for me to watch that I put off to see yours. Love the quality content! I can't wait for my Dan's soft ark to arrive, so I can begin the process of learning a new skill.

To be honest I enjoy your channel I never really realized that you didn't have commercials and sponsors etc until I saw a video where you pointed it out. I really like the fact you have me reminisce of my childhood sharpening on arkansas stones. When I began watching your videos you exclusively sharpened on arkansas stones. I really dont mind you pulling out a silicon carbide or aluminum oxide or even diamond stones. Some of the other channels I watch for sharpening tips and tricks are Big Brown Bear and Michael Christy who i think are great but man they can make you drool and spend a fortune with all the new stones they show. Checkout this new super steel and checkout this new diamond waterstones and new cubic boron stones etc or checkout this mirror and hair splitting sharpness etc. Nothing wrong with it but i love seeing a different perspective like yours checkout this coarse edge and how sharp it is, or checkout this 30 dollar stone and results versus the 30k Sharpton etc

I watch all your videos usually more than once. I think when you put a well known name in the title it gets more hits partially because of KZbin's algorithm. Key words in the title cause them to push the video out more and make it easier to find. I agree with you about you being the best sharpening channel on youtube. I watch you and one other guy now and I learn from the two of you more than all the other guys combined. Keep up the good work man!

Yep. Your bevel really IS your edge, IMHO. If you don't have a solid bevel, there is nothing to build an edge on.

Hey, Chris, another great one! On the subject of "brand names", I concur with the fellow below about KZbin algorithms....and, I think the same thing happens on Amazon. As you know, I've been a big fan of the SpiderGear D2 SG76. It's a rugged working knife and the factory grinds are damned near as good as an ESEE 3 or 4. The guy that sells them discounted them on Amazon and I basically bought them up. Less than $30! I wondered why my reviews didn't appear....I happened to check the customer feedback for the company and that's where....1 of my reviews was, instead of beneath the product ! I'm sure Amazon was getting paid by the big boys to discourage a "best bang for the buck" competitor. Anyway, I had sharpened a bunch of hunting knives for a friend of mine....all popular brands, including a shitty SOG. I thought he might like the SpiderGear and I showed it to him. He saw the logo, his face lit up and he said, "Oh, that's a ......". He couldn't think of the brand name. I said, "It's not Spyderco.....it's SpiderGear." His face fell and he walked away to talk to someone else not knowing that he missed out on getting a knife he would have loved....because I planned on giving it to him. Just another quirk about human beings. Glad you talk about that stuff.

@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Wow! I gotta tell you, I first saw a Spidergear D2 SG76 on one of your videos. I got interested because it was tool steel and because the handle profile looked rounded and didn't have a pocket clip....I hate pocket clips digging into my hands when I'm doing something serious. Anyway, you did an "unboxing" and I never saw you bring it up again. Glad you're using it. I love them......and so do five buddies of mine....the Chief Deputy of Greene County carrys one all the time. I've got three extras, one is sharpened and I'm doing one right now, more or less following the progression you posted (without video) the other day. That Griomatic 120 is awesome....and, since it's a waterstone, I don't have to frig with de-oiling when I jump to DMT. I've got this one as far as DMT coarse and I could live with it, as is....but I'm going for the blue chip! By the way, I got an 11 1/2" DMT 1200 last fall and it sucks. I don't know what it's contaminated with but it leaves coarser scratches in spots than the fine does. Thanks for the tip about Best Whetstones....I'll try those! Cheers, Wayne

@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Hello Chris. I only have one dmt stone. A small 4inch coarse diasharp, which i bought about 3 months ago. Even dmts are difficult to get in my country, so i decided to spent little money on a small plate, to see if i like them. The stone has 2 higher points at it's surface, without grit on them. You can definately feel them. One at each side of the surface. I can send you photos if you want, to understand better what i am saying. The shop i bought it from already had a shortage of stones and i had to wait about a month for them to restock. All to support a small bussiness in my country. So, turning it back was not a good option. It does the job, being small and convenient for outdoors. I will be honest, i am not buying a dmt again. So far, every damn experience with diamond stones i had, being plates or resin bonded Venevs, was a disaster. To all of those who want stones they can rely on, i firstly suggest Norton Crystolon , and Indias if they want small edc back up stones. Norton makes 4 inch medium, fine and their coarse/fine combo. For all grits, i have found that Silicon Carbide stones are much much better than diamonds. I ordered a Japanese Sigma Sellect 2 1000 grit SiC stone and i am waiting for it. I will let you know what i think of it after i use it.

I have seen a lot of knives like that bevel. IMHO it is when they grind the edge in with a belt sander. The hand is not steady doing it, and it ends up like that. Looks good and is sort of sharp, until you put it on a flat stone. Then you see it's jacked up. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. You gotta hone it out. Pain in the butt.

According to most you tubers GEC is the do all and end all of traditional slip joint knives. Now it sounds as if their current production is less than perfect? They surely are demanding premium prices. Thanks for daring to challenge accepted wisdom.

@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't say there was anything at all wrong with the knife. I said it had a crappy edge. Every single one of them do from the factory. They are very good knives. Best slip joints made. And the price is definitely fair for what you get. Now if you're talking about the secondary market, they go way up quick

Nice job. I was wondering why you pulled the duo sharp vs your solid plate? Just curious. I had a good morning sharpening session where I pulled some tasty edges. Today, I employed your count-down method using light edge leading strokes and tested on the BESS scale, and Damnation! They were sharp! Even on 400 G diamond.< 150 BESS. I’ve been really working hard on my burr removal and I believe I finally have a fool-proof solution to be certain the burr is truly gone. I’ve been sharpening a long time, but I honestly believe you’ve helped to make me better. A couple other guys deserve props too, but you’re in good company my man!

I just wanted to come by and say I really appreciate your words of encouragement and checking up on me on my last video. It really means a lot coming from OG like yourself. Honestly, I’ve sorta taken a page from your playbook in how I model my videos. Adding little tidbits of knowledge throughout the video is a clever way to make sure people are there for the right reasons. Also don’t get me started on that train car analogy you made haha! I couldn’t agree more about setting your foundation on diamonds. Burr reduction and setting that crisp foundation on your first stone is one of, if not THE most important part of the sharpening. Which is sadly lost on a lot of people. A lot of folks are too reliant on finishing stones and stropping compounds. I could tell instantly that pink translucent produced a nasty edge by the sound it made going through that post-it. Super jealous you have that! One of these days I’ll have to get my hands on a good broken in Arkansas to see what it’s all about. I just got done testing some really nice japanese naturals a friend let me borrow and boy they’re the truth! Apples and oranges comparison, I know, but there’s something really special and primal about sharpening on stones from the earth. Take it easy boss ✌️

I think you get more views when you sharpen spydercos or Benchmades because it’s what we have in our pockets. When you sharpen a knife you also talk all about it. it. Not just sharpening.
