Lois shows you how to sharpen an important leatherwork tool: the edge beveler. Using a carving tool sharpening kit (linked below), she sharpens, hones and tests the tool, making sure it's razor sharp for its next use.

I couldn't figure out this edge beveler until I watched your video and realized I was holding it upside down trying to cut with the wrong side! :) Oh my gosh. Thank you.

I got a really cheap Edge Beveler in a kit I bought. It wasn’t sharp at all, I was going to bin it and buy a better one. After watching your video I gave it a go and now it’s perfect. Thanks.

THANK YOU!!! I was racking my brain on how I was going to sharpen my beveler! I’m somewhat new to leather working and been buying a few tools here and there as I can. Got a couple of bevelers and one of them is dull as a butter knife now… won’t be for long!!!! I’m wondering if I could use one of my serrated sharpening stones…. That might work too! May give it a go and see what happens! Thanks again for the very informative video! You are a joy to listen to! Your voice reminds me of my Gran. May she Rest In Peace. She was from Yorkshire and I loved listening to her speak. I will check out more of your videos! Have a lovely day! Cheers!

Great video and tip. Edged tools should glide like butter when cutting leather. There should not be much effort at all. If there is, the blade is not sharp enough. I found out the hard way and it was so frustrating. I struggled so. I sharpened my blade tools in the beginning and I thought I was sharpening correctly. It's all in making the blade straight as you sharpen and in the stropping the blade. I also found that stripping the blade after every few cuts keeps the blade in perfect sharpness. Don't go so long before stripping or the blade with need to be resharpened and that takes much longer to get the edge back as it should be. I learned this from a chef on KZbin, so I used the same lesson on my blade in my leather craft. I been happy ever since.

My bevellers do not have a flat underside. There are grooves on all the undersides. Not smooth and flat like yours. Does that mean that mine are rubbish, or should I grind them flat? Thanks for these videos by the way!

There's a bunch of other ways to sharpen. Probably the easiest one is to Bevel anm Edge put buffing compound or Jeweler's Rouge and then backstroke that. Or find a metal rod that is the same size of your beveler put sandpaper backstroke.. you can even put some thread and drag it through with Jeweler's Rouge or buffing compound.

I have some cheap ones that were the same as yours. I used a file to remove the grooves on the back and polished it with sandpaper. They weren't very good at first but now they're great

Most of the commenters here didn't pick up Lois' key advice- even when you buy a high quality beveller it will be dull right out of the package. So whether it be cheap or expensive you'll have to learn how to sharpen your tools.

I also whittle and wood carve, so oh do I know sharpening your blades is never a waste of time. The waste of time comes when you're sitting in the emergency room waiting to get stitches. A dull blade is a dangerous blade. As soon as I start feeling resistance or a tool fighting me I stop and grab my strop. It also saves money and not just with an ER bill, my exacto blades get sharpened too giving them many more uses.

Where are you buying bevelers that aren't sharp out of the package? Even the cheap ones from Tandy are sharp strait from the store. Also. Sharpening only the outside edge will eventually wear out your tool. Sharpening the inside of the Grove is easy with 3000 grit sand paper wrapped around a business card. Dry stroping to get rid of the burr is fine. But it isn't enough.

Wouldn't it be easier to just run the beveler forward instead of backwards when sharpening so you won't get that "beard" (direct translated from Swedish)?
