A sharpening station should help me keep my chisels sharp. Trend kindly sent me a Dimond stone to use.

Matt, you're a genius! You just saved me a big piece of 4mm plywood I was going to cut holes for the diamond stones! 😂 Now, instead of doing it, I'm going to use thin strips of wood, like you did! 😃 Thanks a bunch for the idea! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

I made exactly this setup a few months back with a rozsutec stone with strop. Is hanging on the wall in my workshop. I have water stones for if a chisel is really bad, but the effort to go into the house and soak them, made me not bother as often as it needs to be done. This has worked really well for quick sharpening whilst on a project.

I liked the built-in protrusion stop at the front for chisels. I would also put one at the rear for plane irons. Oil on a diamond stone struck me as an odd choice. Paul Sellers, Rex Krueger and others all use cheap window cleaner. Much easier to clean up afterwards.

I’ve got a honing guide and diamond plate similar to your old one. I hate sharpening chisels, I have no excuse though.

Nice work Matt. Nothing better in the world of sharpening than a sharp tool gliding through wood producing ultra fine shavings 🙂

Anything that makes it easier to reach for the stones and sharpen your blades before they get too dull is a good thing, hope this works out well for you Matt !

Hi Matt, a good project build we do need to look after our chisels and a sharpening station is needed. I watch one being made by David Gladden from Almond Bank Workshop from Dumfries it is a few years old the video and good to watch. As always great video, Take care👍

I bought one of those plates last year I am really pleased with it. The larger size makes it great for plane irons and chisels. One thing to look out for is with the side clamping guides the chisel shoulders need to be the same on both side otherwise your bevels come out lopoy. Don’t ask how I know 🙈

Did you have to break the stone in first? And did you need to polish the back of the chisel?

Good video but a few mistakes I’m afraid mate. You shouldn’t put oil on a diamond stone ,it will clog it, use water or lapping fluid and make sure you dry it after use. Second thing is you should keep the 25degrees as your primary bevel then hone to 30 degrees ,will last much longer,hope you don’t mind me mentioning these things👍

I find car glass cleaner a better lubricant. The household stuff can cause rust on the plate.

Great video, but don't use oil on a diamond stone, it will clog the diamond plate. I used cheap supermarket glass clears for years and it works like a charm.

Surprised you didn’t get them to send their lapping fluid…, thats what you use on diamond plates, instead of oil.

Nice video, but NEVER EVER apply oil to a diamond stone. It clogs up the diamond pores and renders it less effective. Use on water to help clear away the filings. Oil on stones only and water on diamond stone.
@chrisb2443
@chrisb2443 11 ай бұрын
Trend actually recommend their own lapping fluid which is petroleum based…designed to evaporate and not leave residue on the stone. Using water can cause rust and ruin the stone.
@Cessna172G
@Cessna172G 11 ай бұрын
@@chrisb2443 I use water on mine, and there is rust but that’s the metal filings rusting if I don’t wash it properly. The block itself is aluminium so that doesn’t rust.

Is 1000 grit enough? Recently watched a few sharpening vids and they go up to 8000…. Some recommend 3000 as a minimum.
@BrainFizz
@BrainFizz 11 ай бұрын
If the chisel is sharp, then the grit number you go to is irrelevant…… also the leather strop does the work for the high grits.
