Marc, that was a really helpful review. As a woman, I've never been all that excited by diamonds. But I can see how this particular set of diamonds could really put a polish to my shop. So in this case I could say that diamonds are a girl's best friend. And, sure, I will also say that diamonds are a boy's best friend.

Thanks for the review. I saw this same system in a video by Stumpy Nubs recently and almost pulled the trigger then. As a relatively new woodworker I am just beginning to appreciate the need for sharpening. As far as the form factor goes I can appreciate how it interferes with your normal process, but rectangular or square-shaped the plates won't lose their shape, diamonds are a boy's best friend.

We recently got a job to cut quadcopter parts out of carbon fiber panels (on a cnc). We were unfamiliar with the material so we used common carbide endmills which usually last for days. We could maybe cut 10 inches before the endmill got dull and broke. We then switched to diamond coated endmills. Even though they were 10 times more expensive than our regular endmills, we were able to run them hours at a time. In this case, diamonds are a boys best friend. We also make furniture, so this sharpening set up would definitely come handy. Awesome video as always. I drink out of a woodwhisperer's mug everyday and your book hybrid woodworking had me build my first oriental inspired ash bed years ago.

I appreciate the review. Having been a woodworker and shop teacher for some time, its hard to imagine someone "in" the trade making a switch to this sharpening system. Of all the things in my shop that are taking up too much room or I don't have a great spot for... sharpening tools are not at the top of the list. That being said, I could definitely see this being a good entry piece for someone just getting into woodworking. As well, I do see this as a nice solution for my classroom. Never having to tell students to grab this grit or that grit sounds awesome, or having to explain which order to work in. So for that reason, diamonds are a boy's best friend!

I've been eyeing this sharpening system for a while. Currently I use a mix of a two-sided diamond stone (300 & 1000 grit) with lapping film on glass plates (600 & 1200 grit) along with a single leather strop with compound. I love the idea that this is all in a single(ish) unit which will make it much easier to pull out and use regularly - so my chisels will probably be sharpened more often (or in other words - before they are completely dull!). I also prefer diamond stones because they stay flat, unlike stones, and they don't tear, unlike sandpaper/lapping film. So all-in-all, I would definitely say that diamonds are a boy's best friend!

as a retired furniture maker who started with oil stones, its all we had back then, i now use diamond plates and love them. hated the mucking round with oil and water stones. i use water and a little dish liquid on them in a spray bottle, and finish on a strop. whole process free handing takes under a minute per chisel. i always rinse off the diamond stones and dry to keep optimal.

Started as just a framer/ labourer and moved my way up into my position now as a finish carpenter. Diamonds are a boy's best friend - thanks for making me say that. I need to up my sharping equipment as I just use wet stones now and they do the job but diamonds stones are the desire. I’ve been woodworking for more than 45 years and, in that time, you won’t be surprised to learn that just about everything has changed. One principle has not changed however and that is that there are many ways to achieve a good result and a few ways guaranteed to achieve a bad result. I have oil stones, I have water stones, I have diamond stones. I have a Tormek T8 and those abrasive films. What I have learned is that, to make a habit, the process has to be easy; by which I mean, if the process is difficult then you won’t do it as often. I can’t think I’m going to buy any more chisels or plane blades but the process I have “developed” is - new blades are measured to see if they have a flat back. Generally, cheap blades or secondhand blades are less likely to whilst new expensive blades should have. If they don’t have a flat back, then grind them and polish them until they are flat but you only need worry about the final 20mm of the blade; if you have Japanese chisels then you will see that only that final bit could be flat. I use the side of the Tormek wheel (220 grit?) to do the hard work and then diamond stones to get me past 1000 grit. Then film to get me up to 4000 grit? When the back is flattened, you need never do that again unless you seriously damage it - I then use diamond stones or film to get my primary bevel (25 degrees for a chisel and 30 degrees for most plane blades but i don’t get hung up on this. Consistency is better than accuracy - if all your primary bevels are 23 degrees or 27 degrees, it matters not). I take the primary bevel (the large shiny portion of the front) to about 1000 grit - I don’t see the need for anymore - I then make my secondary bevel that only goes up 1 or 2mm up the newly shiny primary bevel. That secondary bevel is usually around 2 degrees more than the primary; so, 27 on a chisel and 32 on a plane but consistency rather than a fixed number). This secondary bevel is the only bevel that you actually cut with - so I take mine upto 6000, maybe 10000 grit. - to achieve these angles on the blades, I use either a Veritas honing guide (but there are many guides out there) or I have several jigs made of ply and each cut to the right angle. - finally, I strip by using a piece of leather with compound or the leather wheel on the Tormek. That’s it to get to the right sharpness for me. Now keeping it there. I have a piece of 3 or 4mm leather about 300 x 200 (just what I had). Whenever I get my chisel trays out, I also put next to it the leather together with a burnishing compound. There are expensive branded compounds or you can use Peek metal polishing paste or even T cut. The main thing is that, every time I take a chisel out of its tray, I strop it on to the leather; perhaps 10 times. When I’ve finished using that particular chisel, I strop it again and put it back. I don’t know exactly how much work you can do with that chisel before you need to get a new secondary bevel but it’s a lot; just keep an eye on that bevel and when you think it needs doing, go back and make a new secondary bevel. There is a knack to sharpening but don’t worry, practice will make you perfect. The most important thing for me is to have those strops to hand; it becomes a habit to strop before and after each task. Get that habit, and you have it worked out. Work out your own preferred method. Watch how others do it and take what you will from that. Diamond stones are not that expensive; films are cheaper and perhaps a good way to start but you have to keep on buying replacement films as they gradually lose their effectiveness.

I’ve had my eye on a Shapton setup for a while now. My OCD tendencies love all in one systems like this. And, diamonds are a boy’s best friend.

Great non-biased review! Very helpful for someone who has chisels but never really thought much about the need to keep them sharp. Keep up the great work! I've always told my wife...Diamonds are a boy's best friend! :-)
