These shelves keep Paul’s sharpening stones close at hand for convenience and separate them from the rest of his tools as they can get dirty. Follow along to fit solid useful shelves at the end of your bench.

I've been watching a lot of your old videos again and I have to say the difference in production quality is amazing. I never noticed the first time through but now I can see the work that goes in to producing all your videos and tutorials. Well done to all involved.

There is nothing pretentious about Paul, unlike some on KZbin. He uses mainly hand tools and when he uses power tools, one is a WorkZone (Aldi) drill the other a standard DeWalt, I have both. I also noticed he put the drill on top of the saw and not worrying about bending it. These little things make Paul stand out from most, as well as his brilliant wood working. Another great video.

Great video , it's a pleasure to watch you work and I've learned about when using a plane not to go to the end to avoid chipping it off. Thankyou.

When you cut the boards to size why dont they become too short when you the plane them? Are you sawing to the side of the knife mark and then planing to the knife mark? Thanks

As always, nice verbal description taking me along with your process. Hope I'm not being a troll, but I'm guessing you have the old rotary hand crank drill, as well as a brace and bits? You do most everything with a hand tool and deft in cutting . An inquiring mind wants to know?
@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 6 жыл бұрын
The advantage of a drill driver ie. battery driven is that you can work it with one hand and hold the workpiece with an egg beater drill, you can’t do that.

Have you ever tried Japanese pullsaws for the cross-cutting? I've found they give such a smooth finish that things never need planing afterwards, because the teeth have no set, which cuts down on some work and reduces the risk of chip out. The downside is that you can't really sharpen them.
@crystalsoulslayer
@crystalsoulslayer 6 жыл бұрын
I've heard you can sharpen them with a diamond feather file, if you have the patience (and maybe a magnifying glass). There are also pull saws that are designed to be sharpenable, but they're super thin and hardened, so they're very easy to break. They're also _super_ expensive, so generally only used by master craftsmen.
@nightcatarts
@nightcatarts 6 жыл бұрын
Well yes, they're theoretically sharpenable but it would be a massive pain to attempt it. Those I've used have had such tiny teeth that I've not found a file slim enough to get between them.. Perhaps a cutoff disc for a rotary tool could do it, but that's asking for trouble.

Fair enough. I was truly blown away after my first time using one, coming from average European saws, but I've never had a really nice gent saw to compare it with.
@Paul.Sellers
@Paul.Sellers 6 жыл бұрын
They are throwaways and do no more than a well sharpened and well set western saw which I have used the same saw of over 53 years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I was always told to plane the end grain in a circular motion. What do you think?
@civilenginerd1
@civilenginerd1 6 жыл бұрын
The reason for that is on short pieces it is hard to control the plane and keep it from overshooting the edge which will burst out the wood fibers if planed straight on. here he has a longer board and if you watch closely he stops planing or goes over the edge with the plane edge at around 45 degrees to the edge preventing bursting. similar to how the plane edge would present itself to the board when planing in a circular motion

Why don't you use a manual "eggbeater " drill or a brace and auger bits for larger holes? I don't like the cordless drill with the keyless chuck. I think it detracts for the hand woodworking style you promote.

Those six 2" screws attaching the bottom shelf went in pretty easily for not drilling any pilot holes into the bench. Or, - - - the video just skipped that important step.

Kirby Spencer : a curmudgeonly comment to match your icon... You can clearly see just before he put the bottom shelf in place that there were no pilot holes.
@kirbyspencer538
@kirbyspencer538 6 жыл бұрын
Curmudgeonly perhaps, it just seemed that they went in pretty smooth. Watching it, I cannot say for sure there were no pilot holes. Perhaps it was very soft wood, thin screws, or well lubricated. We might could drive a few 2" screws in our own shops then look at the video again.
@paulsellers7953
@paulsellers7953 6 жыл бұрын
I am guessing you have not discovered TurboGold double self-countersinking with underhead ribbing that seats the screw dead flush. Carbon steel, they are also wax-coated with a coarse single thread and with a rifled shank which reduces splitting & allows close to the edge driving because of its drilling points that remove the need for pilot holes and serrated thread edges that ease the screws in through the wood too?
