Hey Noel, love the reviews and have been a longtime fan of the show. Back in 2018, I reached out to ask you for advice on what board to get as my first shortboard. You gave me some good advice - I ended up with a 5'8" rocket wide (I'm 5'8" and 150lbs) and have been riding it for two years now. I recently decided I want to get a new board - something that's geared toward better waves and is more of a daily driver than a small wave performance board like the rocket wide is. I'd call myself an intermediate surfer and am thinking about something in the 28L range. I've had my eyes on the stock 5'8" Uber Driver. What do you think of this choice, and what other boards would you consider if you were in my position? Cheers from up north!

Great review Noel! For SoCal summer mushy beach breaks typically 3ft and under, would you recommend an intermediate surfer working on turns to get the Maguro? Or how does it compare to El Tomo Fish, Astro Pop, and Seaside?

I was surprised to not find a lot of info about how to find the shaper's dot - maybe it isn't possible without having a shaper's square. If anyone has a way to measure an educated guess, I'd love to have a look on my boards. Great information as always Noel! By the way I've been loving the @nvs c-drive twins - curious how your fins would feel in comparison. I also regularly ride the Album NVS twin set.
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel. Nothing special needed to measure the sharpers dot. Just a simple tape measure and maybe something square (piece of paper works :-) Fin placement is composed of: Distance up from the tail Distance in from the rail Toe the angle between the back of the fin and the front of the fin Cant the angle or amount that the fin leans over stringer to rail You might like some info on my channel, I have just done one on FCS and Futures and the Fitting of fin boxes as I make my own boards as well as some reviews etc. Your general 5 fin set ups most are positioned really similar on different boards. Keels and specific quads twin and stabilizer twinzer bonzer etc can vary a lot from shaper to shaper.. Twins I personally like them well back but I dont like a slippery board myself. Cheers.
@SecretReefs
@SecretReefs 4 жыл бұрын
@@lawson45uk cheers yea thanks for that info and I subscribed to your channel. You mentioned you prefer your twins farther back than they would be if you were to use the front fin boxes on a 5 fin right? I've been running all my boards as Twin plus small stabilizer (usually a knubster tiny one) and my boards are all 5 fin. I don't feel particularly out of control but I figured that was from the stabilizer helping. I do have the El Tomo Fish and that's quad fins only and originally I thought about installing a center trailer box because I really wasn't into the quad and preferred twin on that board, like I do with my others. But then I realized that if I put the knubster stabilizer in the heelside rear box and leave the toeside rear box empty then I get the stability I wanted on my backside turns in a kind of asymmetric fin combo - big raked NVS C-Drive twins in the fronts and knubster in the heelside rear only. What do you think about that in general? Tomo has told me that if I wanted a true twin-optimized board it'd be better to make it custom placed fin boxes instead of the standard quad. But I've had really good experiences with it this way so I'm not bummed, but everyone trips when they see it in the lineup with fins like this. And I've had Matt Biolos tell me that he thinks there's way too much gimmicks going on in the tail (C-Drive twins, knubster, quad inside single concave Tomo, and jet fighter tail) - he may be right but this is the best board I've had.
@lawson45uk
@lawson45uk 4 жыл бұрын
@@SecretReefs Cheers Daniel. 😊 lol Sounds like you’re a man of detail and experimentation like myself 😊 Yeah some boards will actually do ok or even well with Twin and Stabilizer and some not. I used to try all sorts in my 5 fin set ups but I’m also a great believer in the specific placement for a specific set up. Be keen to see what you would make of say and MR Cali Twin or something that’s dedicated twin and stabilizer set back and in further than the normal thruster. I made the diamond tail one on my Instagram for a mate that hates thrusters and he’s been really happy with that with a Chippa silson and even liked Modern Keels in it which again would be a little different to ideal placement and cant. My Inst is go_surf_nz if you are keen to see a few of my own shapes. It’s definitely good to experiment and see what you enjoy personally though and a 5 fin all rounder board will let you do that for sure then you can always give a design that’s dedicated to the set up your really like. Yup I ran the C drives a lot about 10 years back when they first came around and I actually really like them for my style of more drawn out turns as I’m not a great surfer. Also lots of people running Aysym or semi aysym set ups and boards that can work for people too. I have a Mysym but never ridden a full aysym board and twin set up would love to sty something that’s got a Keel one side and quad other all in the right fin positions may well make one one day but something like the Album or Pavel style would be cool. Lol That’s kind of amusing.. Lost are probably my favorite boards but it’s funny if Matt says the El Tommo has a gimmicky tail as it’s the same as the Hydra. I haven’t really gotten on with tommos but me and the waves are not really good enough for his designs I think but I do think he does some really efficient and clever designs so everything I have ridden has a really magic carpet feeling of lift and glide so must be something In it.. Same time for me myself I find wings step and funny tails don’t ride well for me as my foot position is really poor so they tend to be inconsistent for someone of my level. Smooth and clean never feels wrong.. Then for my own shaping I have really liked doing a few wings and steps as they work well with that twin and stabilizer set up and also have a unique look and ride and they do reduce area behind the foot for a good rider.. Unfortunately I’m not one so for my personal stuff simple and forgiving is best. There is definitely a lot of gimmicky stuff going on in all industries though. Companies all want to pitch this years models as different and the next big thing and there all in it to make money so it’s worth their while to market the gimmicks to people. Rocker outline and foil and the basic stuff make 90 percent of the magic rest is all the extra 10 percent or the bits to make it stand out and look nice… Cheers for messaging.. Hope you like some of the content..

Hi there, amazing review once again and it certainly touched a very important point, the fins you use on a twin fin ;) I bought a CI fish and i am struggling with the MR`s, Usually surf on a tri fin and after two surfs in the ci fish, same volume as my regular shortboard (26 L) i just thought about selling it! board is really hard to be ridden. Any suggestion on a fcs fin that can give me a bit more control, pivot and drive ? Thank you for your help.

I found the CI Fish very tough to surf.... every turn it would catch on me and I would loose speed. Tough board to shred and get two good consecutive turns on a wave without the nose catching on me. I tried a couple different fins and it just would not go good. My advice is this.... sell it and get a Maguro or Black Baron. The CI Fish is not user friendly in my book.
