*I TE TAU I HANOA (English Translation of lyrics)* Translated by the composer Rev. Tinirau Soatini and published by Artu Soatini-Hewitt. _Please note this is sung in in the Tongareva language - a northern Cook Island dialect of the Cook Islands Maori language._ _Verse 1._ *I TE TAU I HANOA KI TE PITO O MOTUTAPU E* Simply means ~ from HANOA to the navel (centre) of Motutapu (Tetautua Village). *TAKA ANGE MOTA E NA TEPUKA-NUI E* (from Motutapu) circling around to Tepuka-Nui. *KO TE AHIA MOTA KI TE KILI-A-TAI, NA TAI ATU E KI ATUTAHI E* (from Tepuka-Nui) The breeze carried on, circling upon the waters of the lagoon to the shores of Atutahi. *PUTA ATU, KI TAI I HAKASUSA E* (from Atutahi) Arriving on the shores/beach side of Hakasusa *SALE ATU, KI HANGALEI E* (from Hakasusa) travelling through the breeze of the winds to Hangalei *KO TE AHIA MOTA KI TE KILI-A-TAI, TU-KI TE PAPA O SOKOAU E* (from Hangalei) The breeze carried on, circling upon the waters of the lagoon to the rocky foundation of Sokoau (A stone-built pillar of human figure related to the legend of Sokoau) _Verse 2._ *KO TUTAPAONE, TE TAHUA O LUHAU E* Continued on to Tutapaone (Omoka Village), the foundation of the fathers. *TUKI'A TE PAPA- HI - TUKI'A TE PAPA- HI* ~Refers to the war like call of the Luhau (ancestors)~ *NA MOTU-UNGA E KI PANIKO MANU E* then around Motu-unga (Malokai) to Paniko-Manu. *TELA ANGE TE VAHINE KUA HILI TE UPOKO, NA TE TAPATAPA MAI LA I LUKUTIA* then goes a woman with her hair braided, strolling along the shores of Lukutia. *E PAPALE VETA ANA, E PAPALE LA-HI* *This part refers to the Woman (mentioned in verse above) rounding fish (Vete) on the beach. *KO TE PITAKA NUI, KO TE PITAKA NUI* The circling of the land/island - from Hanoa to Lukutia (note: the islets mentioned in the song are only some of the islets; the islets chosen to represent the island of Tongaleva in the song). *KO TE PAPA IA O NA VAHINE* The foundation (Tongaleva Island), the land from where the women/mothers originated from. _Verse 3._ *TE UPOKO HENUA, KO HALEATA E* The head of the land is Halehata. (First wife - Head of the figure) *KO TE UMAUMA E, KO HAKAKAINGALO E* The chest is Hakaingalo. (Second wife - the chest of the figure) = simply means the second Tongaleva wife. *KO MATAUIA E TE PITO O MOANA E* Matauia is the navel or centre of the sea/lagoon (Third wife - She comes after the chest; she is the navel. Painting her as the blue lagoon). *TE KILI-LANGI-MANAVA, KO TINIOI E* The beautiful Heavenly Blessed child in the womb of the mother is Tinioi. (Refers to the unborn child with skin as beautiful as the heavens). *TANGI KE - TANGI KE - TEPAERU E* Greetings, Greetings, oh Tepaeru. (Tangi Ke means Kia Orana/greetings/welcome in the Mangaia dialect - the island where Tepaeru comes from). *KO TE HIHI IA O AVARAU HENUA* For this is the chain (5 mothers of the island of Avarau (Ancient name of Palmerston Island) *E SUMALINGA KE TE VAHINE TONGALEVA, VAHINE A’UA’U HENUA* So beautiful are these women of Tongaleva Island, and the woman from Mangaia Island (A’ua’u Henua - traditional name of Mangaia). *Please also see the replies to this comment to get a context of the song/verses* ** Please note that these lyrics and translations were taken from facebook; all rights go to the original owners and publishers; I do not own copyright; please do not get offended; there is no ill-intent for me posting this comment; if you wish for me to take this comment down, please let me know; God bless **

*THE FIRST PART OF THE SONG (Short Explanation)* Verses 1 & 2 THE LAND OF THE FATHERS - PITAKA PITAKA ~ meaning ~ The Circle/Circling of islets (island). (Referring to the Island of Tongaleva also known as Penrhyn Island). Tongaleva/Penrhyn Island is an atoll which contains a circle of islands with a lagoon. *The song starts off naming parts of the island by islets circling the Pitaka.

*THE SECOND PART OF THE SONG* Verse 3 This part of the song is about the 5 wives of William Marsters. The 4 wives from the Island of Tongaleva and 1 wife from the Island of Mangaia. (In the song, the 4 women from Tongaleva are structured as a “figure” or the form of a woman). *you have the “head” of the body/figure, after the head is the “chest”, after the chest is the “stomach” and in the stomach is the unborn child carried in the womb.
