Mr. Todd McFarlane is a great artist, he helped comic books and action figures evolve into what they are today but he failed to do so himself. He claims that action figures should have the least articulation possible because it will ruin the sculpt and because of that he fights articulation with all his strength. Being that he owns an action figure company that means a lot. He also claims he knows it better because he is an artist and he has a better sense when it comes to stile and posing so he decided to "pre-pose" the base sculpt and limit the amount of articulation on this Spawn action figure. Here it is Mr. Todd McFarlane a "pre-posed" figure with limited articulation that as soon as you try to turn the neck to one side it will ruin the sculpt so badly that it doesn't even look like an action figure but a broken statue that was glued the wrong way. This should be more then enough to help him evolve but I don't believe it will and for that I think for McFarlane Toys to be able to become a very good action figure company Mr. Todd McFarlane should be kept away from action figure designing. From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank you so much for every thing you did during all this years Mr. Todd McFarlane but please from now on let some one else decide things when it comes to action figure designing. Thanks for the review Shartimus.

@brenoferreiraferreira44093 жыл бұрын
@schwiggity What you're saying is true but it doesn't mean they have enough or that the range is enough. They have butterfly joints without any range at all, the ab crunch only crunches back, the head can't look up, not even on a flying character, even when the limbs are very slim he sometimes wont use double joints like he did with the Robim figure and he will try to insert a pre pose whenever he can. Mattel had that articulation ages ago and what do you mean by "...he's not Hasbro." that is just nonsense. He is the one doing something very specific, action figures where the focus is on the figure and not the action, I believe action figures should have the better compromise possible between action and figure, articulation and detail. There are loads of companies who can do that and Mr. Todd doesn't want to learn with them because he seems to have this ridiculous idea that he would be showing weakness by learning with others or that it would diminish his talent and personality by doing the same thing others do even if it means he has to do it the wrong way. I admit there are ppl,who may like pre posed action figures but that isn't the majority and that wasn't what he promised us when this kickstarter started.

@@sreidlik I completely understand what you’re saying, but in that case, he should have committed to the statue formula and omitted the articulation altogether, and perhaps included arms/limbs with the weapons and accessories sculpted and integrated with the prepose. oh yeah I do hope definitely one day Todd is willing to lend it to mayfax or sh to see what their takes on his iconic character will be but even so I think he can make a stunning figure on his own he just needs to learn more about articulation somebody needs to throw that man a storm collectible figure or an ice age and just let him play around with it start throwing him figures with super unique ways to not only hide articulation but show how it can be seamless as well and I guarantee ideas will be ruling cuz that's the thing about Todd if he had to choose sacrificing sculpt over articulation he will go sculpt any day and I'm kind of glad that this spawn doesn't really use a rubber torso because although a lot of people like that aspect of storm collectibles I think that's their biggest downside because over time I feel like people are going to have problems with that rubber aging and falling apart plastic lasts a long time but rubber pieces when you're moving them when you're playing with them they're not going to hold up over time and when you spending $60 $70 a figure on sh figuarts figures rubber just ain't going to last no matter how hard soft or what type of rubber you use I'm even kind of worried about the rubber on the Doomsday figure or the Batman doomsday I don't know what's official name I believe it's devastator cuz it has some rubber spikes I know it's to save people from pain and I get that but at the same time those might deteriorate over time And one thing I've learned at least with the old style of Todd McFarlane figures his older figures have seen better days when you open one of his figures like his movie versions of spawns like violator you got to be extremely careful with him paint rub acts like a glue in those figures just become super brittle and start to fall apart like nothing because of aging as well as being trapped in a clamshell forever kind of puts it in a sea of toxic chemicals from the plastics which could also deteriorate it the idea is to make a figure that's not only highly articulated but looks as seamless as possible but your third most important step is to make sure it stands to test the time where this is going to be something that's in people's collections for like 30 50 years even I'm not saying it's going to last that long or I'm not saying the person's going to have it that long but I'm sure even years from now when we're all dead people are going to taken liking to these figuresand they're going to want to preserve them like the human race wants to preserve anything not being said these figures need to be built stand the test of time why do you think companies like 30 make stuff out of complete diecast metal that may be expensive but they know that that metal is not going to break it's not going to fall apart worst case you're going to get paint shipping the original transformers or at least some of them used to be made out of metal too because they knew the same factor Tonka trucks were made out of the same type of material that actual trucks are made out of and could withstand the weight of an elephant granted they say that they're unbreakable but I'm sure there's at least been a few cases of them breaking because nothing's indestructible but they're pretty damn near indestructible Case in point three key ingredients to any figure Number one Max articulation Number two seamless sculpt Number three good paints as well as paint job preferably matte finish is probably better than gloss and number four make sure your figures can stand the test of time by using high quality plastics especially if you're charging a high price point anything over $40 you should try to use the best grade plastic that you can for your money hell even at $20 it should at least be halfway decent

@@Shadowskulptor regardless if they supported it or not, people have valid criticism of the figure. McFartland is competing with modern figure lines now. It’s not the 90s anymore where his sculpts are on top and he can do whatever he dreams up. This falls short in the most confusing places. NECA is proof you can deliver exceptional sculpts without sacrificing articulation points. This doesn’t even meet the standards of the MK11 spawn
@wildcard70753 жыл бұрын
@@gokakarotku i would agree in some cases, but neca is also guilty of providing articulation that is functionally useless in some cases. all of these companies are capable of creating a well articulated figure, but sometimes they choose to put more emphasis on the sculpt and the articulation suffers. As a recent example, look at their TMNT triceriton , it has about 20 degrees of forward hip movement. They chose to sacrifice articulation for sculpt. In my opinion, this figure is about 80% of the way there in terms of articulation, but in terms of general aesthetics, its light years ahead of your standard dc multiverse, or marvel legends figure. I dont really understand how people can look at the comparison between this and those other spawn figures and think that this doesnt look way better. Spawn Toys evolved into better looking full-on statues and now he’s making amazing fully-articulated DC figures. This spawn is a total step backwards from both. Why ???
@JayL88993 жыл бұрын
Just for clarification, not trying to be a douche but how is this a total step backwards? Apart from its preposed torso (which still has articulation) much like the newest Arkham Batman figure. And also Todd put thigh swivel in the Spawn figure, which I’m sure you know is lacking in all of his DC Multiverse Figures.
@ChronicDreamer1st3 жыл бұрын
It’s a step backwards because it’s not as detailed as a full-on statue yet it’s not as highly-articulated as an action figure, so rather than getting the best of both worlds you’re getting something not quite as good as either. This figure is a compromise between a statue and a figure in a time where toy engineering has moved past that and made it possible to no longer have to compromise between the two. We have designed joints that allow for articulation without breaking the sculpt and this figure is a step backwards from that. “Preposing” is obsolete.
@JayL88993 жыл бұрын
@@ChronicDreamer1st Fair on the detailing as a statue, that I get. But in terms of not “highly-articulated” to which standards? Because if we’re talking McFarlane Toys, this Spawn figure has as many POA as a DC Multiverse, MHA or Cyberpunk figure (and that’s not including the POA on his cape). Or are we comparing it to other toy companies...? Like Mafex, Figuarts or Hasbro? Because that’s a different discussion, the resources and engineering at McFarlane Toys is about what I’d imagine we’d get in this Kickstarter Spawn, because I actually have a couple of McFarlane DC figures and the MK 11 Spawn figure as well. I think that the argument for preposed torso/head on this figure is kind of blown out of proportion. Figure collectors who actually pose and display their figures will find always find ways to display them. Case in point Shartimus photos at the end of the video. I also think the majority (not you) in these comment jump on the bandwagon of dumping all over this figure instead of formulating an opinion for themselves. I’ll reserve mine for when I actually have it in hand but from my observation so far in his review, I’m fine with it. I don’t see the argument of it being a step backwards in terms of figure engineering or comparison. Because if we’re comparing it to previous Spawn figures, this seems to be the best one.

Articulation ..... If I wanted a statue, id just buy a statue. That's really it for me. Not how much articulation you can get within a good price range and aesthetics is not an easy question. It's just some little tweaks that need to be done to get that Torso working. In this case I get it. I wouldn't want to break up that Torso either. For me it's that upper thigh that's a problem. Without an upper thigh swivel cut, that forward joint is lacking. It should honestly just be on a ball joint and it would solve so a few problems. The prepose does get a little annoying as again, not a statue. Not a fan or the torso prepose but I like that cape prepose. The core of the articulation argument is just that I want to be able to put the figure into any position I want. If I want the figure to do a split, it can do a split even if it never happens in the comics. I don't like the limitations on my imagination. That being said, the figure just looks great. Maybe it's time be more experimental in articulation.

Now granted I know a lot of people have complaints with the torso but I think out of all the biggest downfalls for me out of this figure was the unmasked head sculpt I was really hoping like the massed version it was going to be on a high rotating joint and a removable one because worst case I figure even if Todd doesn't give us a super articulated version we could at least just swap the heads on a custom body and basically kit bash our own Spawn from one of these figures that being said on my biggest gripes and I think biggest downfalls with this figure is the factor that the unmasked head is static unlike the masked head one of the biggest selling points for me was the unmasked head it just looks so beautiful it's a work of art incarnate could use a little bit more green around the mouth other than that it is absolutely stunning this whole figure is absolutely stunning that being said Todd if you're watching I hope you do release a retail release version of this but instead of being the statue like action figure hybrid it will have standard articulation on the level of the mortal Kombat spawn cuz I feel like if you really hybrid the two of those figures with a new body sculpt mind you you can make a retail release of classic spawn include the unmasked head and regular head as well as a few accessories the only difference between this version which is more statue like that caters to both original McFarland fans and newer articulation fans would be a high amount of articulation like I said I do really feel like there's a market for a high articulated release at some point in time especially given that the kickstarter surpassed its entire goals overnight so fingers crossed we get a version mind you with the unmasked head sculpt as well that is able to pivot and move freely without any hindering Besides all he would have to do is probably cast the entire body parts he would have to make the torso from scratch but other than that cast the hands the metal parts can be reused as far as the head he just have to chop it off at the neck and then cast it to be similar to the unmasked head there wouldn't be much work needed to basically result the thing for a high articulated retail release That being said the paint job is phenomenal besides articulation gripes this thing is an absolute artwork and piece of perfection that's the reason why I love McFarland my two biggest gripes have always been with McFarland back in the day they used to use cheaper plastic which was so brittle and broke so easily as well as articulation besides those two points I really feel like Todd's figures are works of art with some better detailing better knowledge of articulation I really think he should go a more storm collectible route not with the rubber torso because I feel like that would deteriorate over time but I definitely feel he should use the neck joint system that they and sh figuarts use he's on the right track I think he just needs to do a double ball hinge and he needs to make it look more seamless so that way instead of being static you can move the neck around without having to worry about match the puzzle piece so to speak Literally to this day like one of my two favorite horror movie Maniacs figures has to be his skull variant of the Blair witch or the original not the tree variant because I like the tree variant but there's just something about the skull bearing of the Blair witch that I find absolutely captivates me as well as his tooth fairy figure and his leather face is super beefy super big compared to NECA his leather face blows them out of the water and not saying something the only downside being no articulation but even as a statue I would take McFarland's any day over Mecca's version of the iconic slasher character just because they made him a bit too petite granted I know certain versions are smaller but at the same time certain versions of leatherface are a lot beefier and McFarland captured that perfectly that being said I also hope the movie Maniacs comes by in a new retail release line at some point because I guarantee super articulation plus Todd sculpting would blow the w**** market out of the water Mecca would have some serious competition especially given NECA has some brittle joints and so I always say stronger plastic is better cuz you know people are going to be posing stuff around like crazy for photography and you always want to make sure nothing's going to break especially over old age and old plastic I remember a while back buying a few horror movie maniacs that somebody customized the logo to be blood red with nail polish if I ever do find them I'll have to take a photo and send them to Todd maybe it will give him some ideas for a new horror movie Maniac plaque cuz the customizer I saw in the work they did was absolutely beautiful anyways another fantastic review another fantastic figure as always I feel like the one thing out of all the complaints we can complain about to Todd he nails is the sculpt the paintwork he makes hot toys level of art sometimes and I feel like this spawn figure is on the level of a hot toy paint job amazing work and can't wait to see what comes next from him

Todd went into so many details and accessories that he overlooked the really important details. If I could take my money back now, would most probably do it. Well... Fool me once...

Seems almost perfect besides that pre pose

Having "more plastic" doesn't overcome the lack of articulation on his figures. And the coffee stain is so played out...

This reminds me of the Masters of the Universe staction line from several years back. Hordak was one of the best. Mcfarlane should have just settled on a statue. Didn't need that much articulation on a figure that doesn't have that much "real" posability.. especially for the price it's going to cost.
