I’m an American. I have traveled over all of Europe and I believe Washington DC is the most beautiful and awe inspiring capital in the world. If I get to Asia that may change but I don’t think so. Compliments to Pierre Charles L'Enfant. Love your videos, Shaun. I am over half Scottish and went to Scotland over 30 years ago (in July) and almost froze to death. Maybe that is why my family ended up in the American South. We’ve been in Louisiana since just after the Louisiana Purchase. I really enjoyed your NOLA videos.

Seeing the Lincoln memorial at night is indeed awe-inspiring. My family (wife, daughter, mother) went there one cold December night in 1989; it was snowy and wet and *NO ONE* but us was there. We had the memorial and President Lincoln to ourselves, and were able to experience it without the wittering and whining of families and school groups to interfere with its feeling.

I think most people who have not actually been to DC don't understand the large scale of the open spaces on and along the mall. It's vast and breathtaking and, in my experience, even transcends the vistas in the European cities I have visited such as London and Paris. It is not like any other city in North America that I am aware of. It was designed and built to be unique.

Awesome video. I am a retired teacher. I taught 3rd grade then later taught English, speech, and drama in the high school. Every year I brought my students to see Washington, D.C.vWe always toured the usual buildings tourists see: Capital building, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln, Memorial, Washington Monument, and the White House. What my students remembered the most were the Smithsonian museums: Museum of Natural History, the Science Museum, and the History museum. I highly recommend them where you can see amethyst crystal geods as big as a bathtub, meteorites as big as a sofa, the Hope diamond,space ships that circled the earth and the moon, moon rocks, Orville and Wilbur Wright's plane, etc. There is so much to see in the various museums that it will astound you. One of the most underrated places to visit in Washington DC is the Library of Congress….the inside architecture & decoration is awe inspiring!! It was designed and built by the finest craftsmen & architects our young nation had to offer and easily compares to , or rivals, that of elaborate buildings of European cities. The national gallery is also worth a visit…the collection is truly incredible, every great master is represented -and best of all- admission is free!!

@rickarmstrong9793 Жыл бұрын
It was almost 20 years ago and things may have changed since then, but my family walked around the DC mall at 4 in the morning. Our primary goal was to do night photography of all the monuments. Anyway, I had my head on a swivel, keeping an eye out for danger because besides a couple thousand $ of camera gear, I also had my wife and 8 year old son. We saw a couple joggers, so I thought it was probably fairly safe. Then I saw a guy off in the distance with a dog. As we got closer, I saw him going from trash can to trash can. Then I noticed he was in uniform, and guessed that was a bomb sniffing dog. I kind of figure if I saw one cop, there were probably more I didn't see, so I was probably in one of the safest places I could be.
@ahwhite2022 Жыл бұрын
4 am is pretty safe in that city. The bars all close by 2.. The criminal element that is up late is usually finally in bed by that time. And, as you note, the joggers and such are already out, as the professional element have very early starts to their day. Many people are in their offices by 6 or 7.

LMAO… Just remember, Happy wife, happy life!! Eastern Market was built and running in the mid 1800’s and then about the early 1900’s, the market closed down (if I’m remembering correctly). Then in the1950’s (I think) they decided to rebuild the interior and open the market again. So the market is basically newish. When I was 17/18, friends of mine and I decided to try and sell tie dyed tshirts at the Eastern Market Flea Market (a weekend thing). We weren’t all that successful, but we tried. As for Capitol Hill, it was in a HORRIBLE state back in the 1980’s. Call it Urban Renewal. They’ve been giving the entire city a total redo!! I barely recognize DC these days!! SWDC (as tiny as it is) looks completely different since 1992!!). HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO FILM AT A MONUMENT AFTER DARK AND NOT GET BUSTED BY THE COPS?! My favorite structures in Washington are the Lincoln Memorial, with its brooding seated statue of Lincoln, the US Capitol building and the Supreme Court building. The Smithsonian museums are a must--and they are all free. The summer in DC, however, is sweltering---hot and humid. Your words about President Lincoln are very moving. Thanks for the video. Shaun, if you are in the "national area" of D.C., i.e. the government buildings, the mall, the monuments and museums, you are very safe. My brother, who lived there, visited my family in Colorado and bought a new car there--then drove back to Washington. The new car had no license plates yet, just a temporary sticker in the rear window. He arrived at night (with me riding along as a tourist). When we got about two blocks from the Capitol building, suddenly we were surrounded by capital police cars---all because of no license plate! We were fine, but the city is very well protected. This happened decades ago--before terrorism, etc. So walking in that area at night is usually OK. Still be smart, however!

Something about the Washington Memorial you might want to know. If you noticed the bricks at the bottom of it are one color and the ones on the upper part of it are another color. That is because when the monument was under construction in 1854, the Washington National Monument Society ran out of money and the project ground to a halt. Twenty-five years later, the U.S. Government took over and completed the upper two-thirds of the structure by 1884 using marble from a different quarry. The two sections closely resembled each other at first, but time, wind, rain, and erosion have caused the marble sections to weather differently, thereby producing the difference in color. A third type of marble is also visible at the dividing line between the two main phases of construction. Just thought you you want to know that.

For a channel that focuses on travel a tad more than food, I have to say when you do food I enjoy it more than other Brits whose channels are mainly centered on food (not given away any names) when they visit the States. I think one big difference is that you're open to visiting cities and states that normally aren't traveled to outside of NYC and LA, and the food experiences seem rather authentic and genuine too. You, Lawrence Brown and Beard Meets Food are arguably my favorite when it comes to Brits experiencing the States outside of the coasts, each one of you focusing on different things.
