Many people recognize “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels as one of wrestling’s greatest performers, if not the greatest of all time. Shawn’s accomplishments and achievements within the WWE are nothing short of amazing and his matches were always incredible to watch. Shawn’s journey to the top is a story worth telling, and it all started when Shawn left The Rockers tag team.
The Rockers, consisting of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, had a huge fan fallowing in the late 80s and early 90s. The high flying, exciting duo had been doing quite well in the World Wrestling Federation but Shawn had aspirations of becoming a solo star. A few backstage incidents would eventually lead Shawn Michaels to breaking up the team, Shawn would go on to become The Heartbreak Kid, and a huge amount of success would follow.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at Shawn Michael’s career in late 1991 and early 1992, an important time for the man who would go on to become a showstopper and icon in the wrestling business. Specifically, this video takes a look at how The Rockers tag team broke up, the Barber Shop Window segment featuring Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, and how Shawn went from being a “Rocker” to becoming “The Heartbreak Kid”.
Topics covered include:
01:29 - A brief introduction to The Rockers
03:59 - Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty having backstage issues
05:31 - The Rockers getting paid less than The Legion of Doom
10:12 - Shawn and Marty begin having issues as a tag team
12:39 - The Rockers and The Barber Shop window
15:56 - Shawn begins his solo career in 1992
16:55 - Sensational Sherri and the Shawn Michaels Theme Song
18:45 - Shawn Michaels vs El Matador at WrestleMania VIII
- Much More!

I’m not gon’ lie: as a kid the barber scene with Shawn super kicking Marty and then tossing him through the window was jaw dropping disturbing to me because you didn’t expect see something like that happen in the era of wrestling where it was cartoon like wholesomeness. After the Barber Shop incident where The Rockers split up, I waited until Marty Jannetty take his revenge..I was disappointed that Jannetty was defeated at Royal Rumble 93..Finally I was happy that Marty won the IC-Title a few months later on RAW. Pro Wrestling Illustrated voted this 1993 Match of the Year and its little surprise. Unfortunately a few weeks later the IC-Title went back to Shawn..At least he managed to get his revenge. The Rockers were a fantastic team and deserved a run with the tag team titles in the early nineties despite the WWF tag team division being land of the giants stuff compared to them. Heck, it was only a broken top rope that prevented them from taking the belts from the Hart Foundation..It was destiny..

The dark side of it is jannettys backstory and how Michael's was able to essentially get away with murder during the mid 90s. The people have a dark side and the breakup ended dark for 1 guy and gold for the other... hell I think it would be a great episode, the dark side of the ring is how promising tag teams can alter for the worst and best of each others career... idk it's a dark side of fame and business not many tag teams experienced. 2 promising careers went completely opposite, one man was ruined, one man became a legend

@@dancook5057 They were about even back then. The difference was Shawn was charismatic & Marty wasn't, Shawn was a natural on the mic while Marty felt like Bret Hart the 2nd (aka his promos felt forced). Also, you can find a podcast with Buddy Rose talking about Shawn, where Shawn would bring food over to Buddy's place so he could watch their matches, dissect what worked & what didn't. That's what makes Shawn the great that he was/is. I've never heard anything of the sort about Marty, all you ever hear was Marty going out to drink & get messed up. I'm not slamming the guy, he's got his demons. I'm just pointing out Shawn's dedication & love to wrestling.

When Shawn came out in the biker jacket you knew it was on!!! I'm biased, but Shawn Michael's coming out party was the greatest heel launch of the 90's! It arguably surpassed the Snuka/Piper moment. At that point The Barber Shop should have just closed shop for good. Man. After Steamboat & Savage, Shawn raised the IC belt to even greater heights. Major props to his gear designer. He rocked the white & gold with the IC belt like royalty. He killed it in black & silver. You knew it wouldn't last, but the pair of Shawn & Sheri ( R.I.P. ) was gold! There was no stopp'in "The Show Stopper".

I thought the Shawn slapping Jannetty moment. And how he stood in the middle just basking in the reaction of the crowd of his heel turn.. Was was a huge moment for the early years of WWF and of course the Barbershop incident was even more intense.. I also used too play with my Rockers Shawn Michaels action figure but never was able too find the Marty Jannetty's action figure.. As usual Great video.

These vids remind me if why i was a huge fan back in the day (I was born in 81 so i was all about it in the 80's and early 90's) and also why i dont care anymore. I actually miss the cheezyness and gimicks. Outstanding work all around. And fyi, the rockers breakup was tramatic for me as a kid, they were my favorite tag team.

I remember being really annoyed with the commentary team at Survivor Series 1991 when they kept saying that Shawn was abandoning Marty, and I was like 'No dudes, he got pinned, he was eliminated!', which he was.
