@ijustwatchyoutube1242 My argument for why Shawn is the better wrestler is that Shawn could have a good match with a lot of different talents, Bret couldn’t. That why I rank Kurt Angle better than Bret as well, Kurt could go out there with someone like Mr Kennedy and have a great fucking match. Bret struggled to work with different talents that weren’t really good in the ring. Bret could only work well with guys that were really good in the ring like Shawn, Hennig, Flair, Savage, Owen etc etc.

@@PhilipBelmont Not just that, but there was nothing at all believable about HBK as a face. He didn't really act differently as a face, he still was self-involved, still came out dancing to a song he sung about HIMSELF being a "sexy boy" (and doing a very non-PG strip-tease routine as part of his ring entrance, literally an unspoken male stripper gimmick). He was still the same cocky prick, made the same jokes, cut the same promos. There was literally nothing different about "face" HBK, except that suddenly we were supposed to believe he was "humble" (the guy who told the ref to get Bret out of his ring, after Bret put him over huge at WM12), and that he has this "boyhood dream" to fulfill (the 1996 version of the lame "finish the story" angle). Much like Randy Orton, HBK was just never a believable hero. He came across as forced, phony, disengenous. They're both very believable pricks. Thus natural heels. Bret on the other hand, while good at being a heel (either as 80s Hart Foundation heel, or 97 "anti-American" heel), he was a believable, credible hero, and a much better babyface.

If Bret had been a "7", he wouldn't have become Vince's go-to guy after Hogan. He wouldn't have been the face of the company from 93-97, and he wouldn't have main evented 3 Wrestlemanias. Granted, Vince being Vince, was always constantly trying to revert to his "big man" obsession, with Luger, with Diesel, etc. And then there was the bizarre man-crush he developed on HBK, which got so bad that it was a detriment to the locker-room and Bret's career, literally letting Shawn do about whatever he wanted. BUT, while I could argue Vince absolutely should have booked certain things differently (such as NOT putting the belt on Hogan after Yoko won it, or IMO having the main event of WM11 be Bret getting his title back from a great crazy heel Bob Backlund), Bret was still unarguably THE man of the "New Generation" era, and he carried the company on his back through very tough times.

James raised very important points. 1. Babyface: Bret: 9 / Shawn: 7 no way Shawn is better than Bret. Shawn was bad as a babyface. Yes, he was always loved by the women but Bret was loved too. We often forget that we're talking about the 90s. Bret was a hero all over the world and Shawn in the 90s was mostly a heel. He was a babyface for a between 95 and early 97 and was actually unsuccessful. If you look at Shawn's second run, he was over as both babyface and heel but never on the level of the main eventer. 2. Heel: Bret 9 /Shawn: 10 As a heel Shawn was a natural, splitting up the Rockers, feud with Razor, tension with Diesel, later the DX phase. He was a natual heel. Bret, even though a great heel for a brief period of time, never completely embraced it. 3. Striking: Bret: 10 / Shawn: 8 Bret's punches and kicks are as perfect as it gets. He always connected but never hurt his opponent. And looked so aggressive with his striking like nobody else. Shawn had some weird jabs and punches, that were very slow, he had a bad double axe handle from the second or top rope. His punches and kicks looked weak. Stevie Richards mentioned Taker. When Taker hits the body punches, you can see how is hands open up and they look like soft claps on the stomach, really bad, same as Austin. Apparently, Stevie is not watching close enough. 4. Promos: Bret: 7 / Shawn: 9 Bret's promos are underrated. Just like James said, when Bret sat down and talked seriously in his deep tone, he was amazing. You leaned in to listen. You felt every word he said, whether it was against Diesel, Owen or Austin. His heel promos were great anyway. Shawn is very good at promos, especially as a heel. 5. Charisma: Bret 8 / Shawn: 10 Charisma is extremely difficult to rate. Because of Shawn's prettiness, flamboyance and natural energy, I give him some extra points. Bret gave you a serious vibe, that he means business, which is another sort of charisma. 6. something they missed out is selling: Bret: 10 / Shawn: 8 Bret was perfect. Nobody came close to it. Shawn was too over the top which took away the believability.

While I do agree that Bret was a better Babyface, the kids loved Shawn as well. Go back to the Royal Rumble in 1996 or any In Your House Pay Per View in 1996 where Shawn was a babyface. You can see the kids cheering and adoring Shawn. Shawn had more of the women in the crowd cheering for him but there were a lot of kids and teens who dressed up like Shawn in the crowd during the time period.

When i was a kid, i remember WWF showing videos about Bret being loved all over the world. I remember videos of him in Asia, Europe, Africa....this guy was loved internationally, probably still is an international loved wrestler. I met Bret in Toronto when he finally came back to WWE, and released the his DVD. The man is calm, collected...I told him i was a huge fan since i was a kid, he thanks me for being a fan, and asked me if i watched the DVD, and told me that it was really good. Got a picture of me getting his autograph on the DVD and his magazine. I literally cried right after because it was one of the best moments being a wrestling fan in meeting a wrestler ylu followed your entire life.

Bret never turned heel in WWE, the USA audience did. Bret was robbed out of a 2nd Royal Rumble which he technically won as Austin was eliminated prior. Constantly attacked from behind and it cost him a win over Sid? For the title. Yet he was deemed the villain when his payback was put in action. Brets actions were totally relatable, this is why he was cheered EVERYWHERE outside of the States. He was also right when he said about the family fighting, although saying the American audience didn't care for family was off the mark he was talking very emotionally but he got the Americans eating out of his hand there and they didn't even notice, this is clear because they say he couldn't cut promos that was one of the best promos I've seen how he managed to turn heel and still be the on the moral high ground making the audience look bad. Simply incredible.

Technical wrestling I would give Bret and Shawn a solid 10. They just wrestled so differently. Bret was very old school and Shawn was innovating so a lot of things he would do were unseen and couldn't be compared. Striking, I think it's an odd category as I would say it's still part of the technical aspect of wrestling even if it's not holds, because you still need to find the right timing and it has to be part of the whole process just like a suplex. I would give Shawn a 9 because he was more of the striking kind and his finisher should count in that category, and he did it so well. Bret I'd give him a good 8 because when he'd strike it felt like he was surgically operating on the wrestlers. Both of those guys have underrated top turnbuckle elbow drops. Putting match together I'd say Bret has the edge with a 10. He literally made Steve Austin a star by building a match with him. But Shawn was amazing too. I'd give him a 9. Babyface you are dead wrong. HBK never really got 100% over as a babyface, he was always a very divisive character amongst us fans, and that's why Sycho Sid got over when they blurred the lines and people had to choose between him and Michaels. I'd give Shawn a 5 on the face aspect because we never fully trusted him. Bret got super over as a face and I would give him a solid 9 just because the 10 is reserved for Hulk Hogan, Sting and Austin who remain superior face wrestlers and got extremely over with the crowds. Totally agree with heels, both of them deserve a 10. Bret knew how to be a heel, he just didn't have much time to do it whenever he could, but man, the waving of the Canadian flag got the American crowds so riled up. And Shawn was so despicable sometimes. One of the best heel promos is when Shawn faked Bret's return and trolled the entire Canadian crowd. Presentation I would give HBK a 10 because he was a camera magnet and knew exactly what to do to stand out. Bret was a darker guy and his old school aspect kinda made his presentation more humble but he still had the classic hitman glasses and every kid wanted them. I'd give him a 9. Promos I will agree that was Bret's weakness but he still was average when compared to all wrestlers so I'd give him a 5. Shawn's abilities in that category greatly improved as he roses to stardom, he became more confident and spoke with a raspier voice, making him more of a character, but his very good promos can be counted on one hand IMO so I would give him a 7. You can't give HBK a 10 out of 10 when you have guys like Ric Flair tearing the house down. Charisma I agree with the notes. 5 for Bret and 10 for HBK seem fair. Creating memorable moments, I would instantly give them both 10 because they just did it year after year. Out of the ring attitude I would give HBK a 4 for obvious reasons. Bret I would give him a 6 because he also had his issues and he always wanted to make things about himself. So in total if I'm correct I have Bret: 82 and Shawn: 84 so it's a very very close score and I wouldn't go as far as saying one is better than the other because in my opinion neither in their prime managed to surpass the other. If you would've added athleticism I would've given Shawn a bigger score and maybe it would've widened the gap. Shawn was more agile, was faster and overall more able to do things than Bret even if Bret knew so many holds. I think it takes a lot of guts to expose your "bias" for one wrestler between those twos because it's a subject that gets people riled up haha. Me I'm just a random guy but you were a pro wrestler so it's an even deeper dive. I think that if I would use those ratings for other wrestlers I would end up with Randy Savage having the highest score. Edit: Just out of curiosity I did it with Savage. Technical: 7, Striking 9, Putting Matches: 10, Babyface: 10, Heel: 10, Presentation: 10, Promos: 10, Charisma: 10, Memorable Moments: 10, Out of Ring Attitude: 4 for a total of 90

Giving Brett a 5 for charisma is laughable. Brett had something Shawn didn't. Aura. Brett truly felt like a superhero in his babyface prime. He was THE man for like 3 or 4 years, undoubtedly. He didn't have to be a flashy talker to have charisma, his charisma was a different brand altogether. You could believe Brett could beat anybody on any given night. Shawn never felt believable as a face champion, he never felt like the man. He felt like an experiment. A guy that was in the mix with other greats, even as a champion. But he was never THE guy even as champion. Brett was a larger than life superhero.

When it comes to technical wrestling, Bret is probably the blueprint. There are only a few others who come close to his level. For me, however, Shawn was and still is the better wrestler overall. As a kid, Bret resonated with me emotionally, but as a teenager and adult, I found him a bit too boring, too predictable. Shawn, on the other hand, had more versatility as a wrestler, and his matches were more varied and simply more creative. For me, it’s exactly the opposite of how it is for Richards. The older I got, the more I came to appreciate Shawn as a wrestler (he’s always been better than Bret on the mic). But I’m not a professional; for me, entertainment comes first. If it were about who executes the moves better, then of course Bret wins. However, I have to be fair and mention that Shawn developed incredibly throughout his career, reinventing himself several times. Bret didn’t have that opportunity since he had to end his active career relatively 'early,' and his time in WCW was just terrible.

As an entertainer, Shawn Michaels. Since wrestling is entertainment more than actual fighting, Shawn can put on memorable and matches and has more connection to the audience. As a competitor that brings out realism into a pre-determined sport, Bret Hart. In a real life fight, a submission maneuver is the most realistic way of subduing an opponent that doesn't involv knocking them out. So, as an entertainer: Shawn Michaels. Also bret never hurt a single wrestler in his whole career, he really was the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be, and don't forget even cm punk said bret was the best wrestler he had ever seen and bret was the reason he got into wrestling, and even today you will still find videos of cm punks opinion of bret, cm punk even cried on camera at the fact brets career was cut so short, shawn was a showman who looked stupid with his overselling, but as a wrestler which is what the sport is all about bret hart wins hands down! Also don't forget it was mainly stone cold in the attitude era that put wcw out of business, and bret hart at wrestlemania 13 made austin look like the ultimate badass, passed out rather than submit, after that austin was a made man, but kudos to bret as in that match austin was against doing the blade job but bret knew how badass austin would look in the sharpshooter with blood pouring down his face so he let bret blade him and the rest is history, bret was selfless!

Stevie this is so spot on - I grew up a wrestling fan since the 80s - and even when Bret was a heel I still rooted for him and loved him because of how great he was as a pure ring tactician. I am not sure anyone out there was as good at Bret at making his opponents look good - at least to me. Sean, however, was the total package in terms of the personality and the draw. When he was a heel he was both loved and hated, his ability to bring drama into a match was almost unsurpassed. They're two of the all time greats, and this is a really well thought out analysis.

Overall I agree with most of what you said. Specifically, his pacing and selling. However, I agree with James. Personally, I feel like you’re underestimating how over Bret was as a baby face in the early 90’s when he would put his glasses on kids and they had some cool promo material. He was a massively over superstar during that time.

After you gave 7 babyfaces to Bret I stopped the show and wrote the first comment, and it looks like other people commented on you about it including your show partner. Stevie, fix Bret's 7 babyface to 10. And we'll try not to refer to the one you gave Shawn a 9 on Babyface.

@@Rjensen2Superkicks? Lol kidding aside… modern indie wrestling has largely been defined by his style - dramatic and big moves with a tendency towards overselling. He was ahead of his time because his style defines the now.

Wish more workers looked up to Bret instead of hbk … Bret was more wholesome and moral than hbk stripping in front of children or backing outta work when it wasn’t something he wanted to do … besides being a better person and role model Bret was just way better than hbk in the ring way more believable

There's a reason why Bret is considered the best there is, the best there was, and the best their ever will be.. the excellence of execution. Everything about him was cool.. even when he was a heel constantly crapping on American culture I still cheered for him. Even as an adult I would let him put his sunglasses on me lol. 🕶🇨🇦

HBK is an amazing talent, but he was handed lasting opportunities because of his relationship with Triple H and by extension the McMahon family, IMO l this is the biggest piece of their history that keeps HBJ within reach of Bret, Vince obviously had some BS feud with Stu Hart that kept Bret and Owen from reaching their full potential.
