Am I the only person who misses music from the mid 90s till 2000? 😂 45 years old as of yesterday and I still listen to stuff from the same era. Most new music is absolute crap man.
@TravisTerrell
@TravisTerrell 3 ай бұрын
Oh no way dude!! Read the comments for almost any song from this era and you'll find loads of people reminiscing! I, too, much prefer it. (Though tbh not this song much.) Even going into the early 2000's is so positive for me (though admittedly that pop became a bit of a different animal.)

Shortly after 2000, "music" switched from being made by artists to being made by "performers". Rap/Hip-Hop and "pop" music killed the art. Lady Gaga (whose _real_ name is Stehanie something) was an exceptional artist who only became popular after transforming herself into a weirdo wearing dresses made of meat to draw attention to herself.

As a teen I spent years in a fairly traumatizing Psychiatric group home, my parents gave me up. My roommate used to sing this to me when I was scared and we were falling asleep. A small act of kindness that still makes me loved when I hear it 20 years later.

After I was diagnosed with cancer, I started chemo immediately. This was 1998 and I was 13. This was the song playing on the radio when my mom and I left the hospital after the first day. I will never forget listening to it while driving (or crawling) down the 405 freeway in Santa Monica. It is truly a "period piece" for me, despite this being a one-hit wonder.

It was '98 or '99. My friends and I were in high school, and unpacking in our hotel room at a convention. The beds had this odd built-in radio between them. I remember folding clothes and listening to this song through the old speakers. I remember the anticipation of meeting the beautiful girl I only got to see a couple times a year at those conventions. I remember being young, with everything ahead of me. That's a moment I'd revisit in a heartbeat.

A college friend of mine, then the head of a major broadcasting company in Munich, brought this song back to Germany from a trip to the U.S. and had his DJs play it. It became a huge hit. A little later, the station brought Shawn in for a few smaller concerts. I saw him and his stunning band in Munich: they were awesome. Nothing came of Shawn's international career, probably because he was a rather introverted shy man, at least at that time. He was all about the music, never about the whole business. From the meet and greet I remember him as a very nice, polite, modest guy. I think he's still active in the club scene in and around.

I'll never forget road trips with my friends, flipping channels to catch this, our favorite song on the car radio. This before internet radio, or cell phones could bring up any music you wanted at will. Elated to find it, we would all sing at the top of our lungs. It's crazy that we gauged the times and seasons in our lives by the few months of radio airplay, back then.

I remember the first time I heard this song I was blown away, The lyrics felt as if he knew me, and the song could have been written about my life, right down to the Los Angeles locations he mentions. That's the mark of an incredible storyteller. Watching the video now, two decades later, I still recognize the girl I was in the past - although she bares no resemblance to who I am now. We all grow up and move on, and for the most part, become who we were meant to be. Mad respect for Shawn Mullins. Such wonderful music!

When my wife and I were first married and pregnant with our first child we thought my wife was going into preterm labor. She called me while I was at work panicked and I told her I would head home and take her to the hospital. On my way home I was getting pretty worked up and this song started playing on the radio. Made me a bit more emotional, but I somehow knew deep down things would be alright. 15 years later my daughter is doing well and learning to drive. She's a pain in the butt, but I love her.

this was my dads favourite cd when i was growing up. i can remeber so vividly driving up to huntsville, Ontario Canada when i was like 7 or 8. My dad threw this cd in the old cd player in his '94 ram and I enjoyed it so much - as a young boy. Today i'm 27. I have never stopped listening to this album throughout my 20's. All the songs start to mean so much more to you as you age. I think my dad connected with these songs on a personal level, almost like he left a story for me. I love you so much dad.

I'm 29, and I feel old. I _know_ that I'm old. People tell me, oh, no, you're still young, but I just brush it off. They say you're only as old as you feel. Well, I feel old. This song, and the genre of watered-down Alt-Rock it represents, is as foreign to contemporary music like Taylor Swift and One Direction as Donna Summer and Talking Heads were to it. It takes me back to Middle-School, riding on the bus and pretending that I didn't like it. Same for Tal Bachman's "She's So High", which not coincidentally, is the next thing on the Recommended feed. Kids would listen to this and decry it as "Old People Music", same as my peers did with 70's music. The feed to right of this comment is like a trip to my childhood; "Save Tonight", "Steal My Sunshine", "Truly Madly Deeply", "One Headlight". It's all gone, lost to the past, to the sands of time. The world we grew up in in the 90's was swept away. I think that always happens to one degree or another, but between the War on Terror and the rise of the Internet, I think ours was more swept away than most. I sometimes feel like a refugee of another time. I have what the Japanese call Mono no Aware; a wistfulness at the impermanence of things. And it already seems like I've seen so much pass. Yet they tell me I'm still young... If indeed I make it to old age, I'm not sure how I'll deal.

I'm having trouble listening to one of my favorite genres now, Alternative. Too much "wooo wooo woo" not enough guitar. No substance. There was a time, between 1995 and 2002 (actually most of the 90s, peaking between 1997 and 2001) when most of the hit songs had structure and some sort of substance, a good chorus, made you feel good, while telling a good story, or expressing something. Now the Pop and Alternative, a lot of it is just a bunch of synth noise. I don't feel like I should be feeling like this, I'm not even 30 yet (28) but every year it seems to get worse. I thought things were bad in 2003, but at least there was a few good songs even back then.

To this day the chorus just makes me super weepy but happy at the same time. Life's hard and scary and unfair, but no matter what happens, whatever struggles we go through, whatever losses we take, whatever demons we have to fight day in and day out... everything's gonna be all right.

I am so fortunate to have been born at a time when I could experience the decades of popular music I have heard over the years. Beginning with the sixties and now currently. I have seen it change with the generations that remember the songs from their youth. Every decade has it's favorites. Every generation has a marker in time based on the songs they heard. One thing is certain, and true for myself, you don't appreciate what you are hearing at that time as much as you do now.
