I'm thoroughly humbled. This may not have been a huge production with thousands of people but still it's intimidating and also enthralling. Film making seems almost indiscernible from the outside. I want to know everything at once and yet have a terrible fear it's unknowable to me. A peak behind the curtain and all I'm left with is the question of "How can anybody possibly focus on or control all that chaos?" "What are the little mundane tasks that glue it all together?" "How do you approach people/companies?" "How do you get permits from the government?" "Are e-mails sent with a certain format or formality without which nobody will take you seriously?" And your film came out so well! You're a heck of a filmmaker, Shawna, and from my perspective you're practically a film making superhero.

Excellent making of featurette, I liked that you decided to share with us the behind the scenes of your short film as I love watching "the making of" documentaries. .I'm glad that this whole experience was a good one for you and that from here on out, the next projects will be even better.

I've never actually considered how much work was needed to make a film. You did an amazing job with the writing, directing and with all the stuff you did to make this happen. although I'm just a fan I love your work.

I'm absolutely in love with Mara & Chen - the action, the humor, the look - just fantastic! And I love Making-Of's, I'm always amazed how many people are involved in such a project and how well they work together. I'm really looking forward to your next projects. :) Thank you so much for sharing this!

I have to tell you this film was fantastic. I am an avid watcher of short films and this ranks right up there at the top. The dialog was good, the story was easy to follow, the action was quick, and it was easy to understand the plot. That is kind of rare with short films. Good Job. I hope to see more installments of Mara and Chen...

Great BTS! That's really good advice that learning is doing. I totally agree! I thought having a large crew on set was going to be tough. Especially just like you, working with new people. Unfortunately for me, I took extra time to train others. Do you think there will ever be a deleted scenes/ bloopers reel? :3 Looking forward to seeing what's next in store from you! Best!

Cool stuff; thanks for sharing! Sounds like you're pretty gracious when it comes to having to trim your script; I feel like I would have too much pride to do it (so it's probably good that I'm not a writer, lol). Also, that is a legit selection of commentaries. O_O Is that your personal library?

Hey Shawna, I'm really liking the final result. When you announced your first short film, I was expecting the usual subpar production you get from a lot of first short films. But I have to say Mara & Chan is a pleasant surprise. There a still a lot of small things i could nitpick on, however these are tiny droplets in an ocean of magnificence. Especially the music has made this short for me. Really the only larger point I have to criticize would be "trimming the fat". I think taking out a bit of pace between some of the scenes might have been favorable. From my own experience however I totally understand that the budget and logistics of such a project more often than not have a large impact on the final result. Speaking of budget, my educated guess would be that this was a production somewehere around the 35k eur / 50k cad mark. You said you overstep the budget quite a bit, can you give me an estimate on how large the original budget was? Or is that a number you rather keep to yourself? ;)
