Oh boy, this brings back the memories. At a concert in Biloxi, MS Styx dedicated this song to the troops being deployed to the 1st Gulf War from Keesler AFB. Not a dry eye in the coliseum. RIP to those who didn't come home. Prayers for peace to those still fighting. Thanks for the reaction.

Styx had a lot of big hits and they were all very talented musicians. James Young, Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung all sang songs were they did the lead vocals. Paradise Theatre is one of my favorite albums. I also like Mr Roboto even though a lot of their fans hate that album.

Hey guys, the story behind this song is that lead singer Dennis De Young wrote this song for his wife Suzanne on her birthday and performed it for her in 1979 with some of his Styx bandmates. The part about him leaving is him talking about leaving for the road as a singer in a rock band and how much he misses her and how much he appreciates and loves her (you might find it interesting to listen to the song again after knowing this). It was never meant to be a hit song or shared with the public, but the record execs heard it and correctly heard hit song potential and requested that Styx put it on their upcoming album. The song was left as is, but a guitar solo was added. It went on to become one of Styx' biggest hits. Interesting trivia: Dennis De Young and his wife Suzanne were high school sweethearts and married in 1970. They are still married today, 52 years later. De Young wrote another tribute to Suzanne in 1972 called "Lady" which ended up being one of Styx' earliest hits. I would love to see you two react to the song "Lady" (which I find to be a hauntingly beautiful song that starts out as a mellow ballad, but builds in intensity to become a real banger by the end and ends with a really great punch).

You are correct. He recorded the song as a present to his wife and played it for her at her birthday party. When his friends that were at the party heard it, they told DeYoung that was a hit song. So after playing for the record company and the rest of the band members it was put on the album Cornerstone. It's the original recording with only a guitar solo added to it. The song went on to become the band's first and only song to reach number one on Billboard's Hot 100.
